featuring Say Anything, Stand Deliver and so many other previous releases.
And before we get to all that, tell us how
you guys first got started.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Well, uh, yeah, we've We've been playing together for for
quite a quite a few years. Camvin was actually living
up in Canada a couple of years ago, and right
around the time that the pandemic happens. I started just
kind of writing again and started sharing things over the
internet with them, and uh, you know, the one thing
led to another and we started, you know, writing more
(03:22):
stuff together, and all of a sudden we had an
EP and then we had more songs and more songs,
and and eventually he moved back and moved back to
Oklahoma City, and so you know, from there we just
kind of picked back up and started writing more and
playing and you know, going going at it.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, that's about it. Yes, it was. I was in Canada,
like you said, and he started sending me music. I
started filling sparks with what he was sending, started working
on the vocals, and uh, we're just about the time
to move back to Oklahoma City. But we had, you know,
some I had some to look forward to is getting
back and working with Andy and putting this band together.
(03:59):
So it's been a great trips so far.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
How'd you first wear in Canada in the first place.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
My wife's family is up there, and we decided to
go up there and be around her family for a while.
And it was in South Alberta.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Okay, all right, and Andrew, you've been a music sceenior.
You're a guitarist of the group, and tell us how
you first got started.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
You know, I've been playing since I was fourteen or
fifteen or so and have just sort of, you know,
continued evolving that and developing my own style and take
on on all of that. And you know, playing and
playing in bands since I was again since I was
about fourteen or fifteen, and gone through a lot of
different styles and iterations of that. And you know, met
(04:43):
Kevin a number of years ago, and you know, started
started the bands, and that one got put on hold
and sort of went away, and then we started started
Blueprint Tokyo.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
And what was that one exact, precise moment that simply
influenced you do an arrest of your career.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
I've got one. It would be when we started a
Blueprint Tokyo. Our first song we released was called Panic Carefully,
And when we put that song together and finished it,
I could feel it that there was more to come,
right then, Okay?
Speaker 4 (05:17):
And then and then Kevin, you've been playing for some
time as well too, being on the guitars and vocals.
And how'd you first get started?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Started off as a kid playing a little bit of piano,
like Andy, I started around ten on twelve on guitar,
started bands around same age, fifteen sixteen, And I really
haven't been in a not been in a band, you know,
(05:46):
just evolving, getting better, working on different directions of music.
But here we are with blueprint, okay.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
And what was at one exact percise moment simply in
fluenty and into what you do and the rest.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Of your career. Yeah. So probably when I was a kid,
I played at a talent show and it pretty much
told me what I was going to do with the
rest of my life is some kind of music, something
to do with music.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
Okay, that's absolutely interesting. And who are some of your
favorite singer songwriters and musicians growing up?
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Oh? Yeah, started the Beach Boys. My parents were older,
so I listened to a lot of fifties and sixties
music and found their record collection, you know, got into
the seventies, so so much different influence on me. You know.
Led Zeppelin of course was an influence. Like I said,
the Beach Boys long list, what about you?
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah, you know, a lot of the same sort of
overlap with music there. But you know, other bands certainly
banded from the eighties nineties, early two thousands, things like that.
I mean, it's been that's really gone into everything we've
done as far as just kind of going into a
musical uh uh blender essentially, you know, to sort of
(07:05):
influence our writing and lyrics and music and everything like
that that we're doing. But yeah, you know, certainly bands,
uh you know, Beach Boys, The Pink Floyd, The Cure,
The Cars, Jimmy World, Smashing Pumpkins, lots lots of bands,
different takes, different uh you know, types of music obviously
and stuff, but sort of taking you know, bits and
(07:26):
pieces that we like from from all of that and
putting it all together.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
And of course I'm the Beach Boys is a bigger
influence now now that Brian Wilson passed away as well
eighty two.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Sure, yeah, that's definitely sad to hear m hm.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
And certainly as as well too. We'll talk about to
other music making seen and inspect your music. We'll talk
about Neon Circuits and the Mission of Hope. We'll be
playing Say Anything in Sandalurre at the end of the

We're here with the amazing dual indie rock alternative band
based in Oklahoma City from Spark and music group Blueprint Tokyo.
Here the Mic Writers Show with Andrew Hale and Kevin Dawson.
(10:10):
And before we talk about royalists of these and I
meant to ask you earlier, how did you first come
up with a name Blueprint Tokyo.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
So, for Blueprint Tokyo, it is the name we come up.
We came up with a number of years ago for
another project and just didn't work at the time. But
you know, really for us, Blueprints Tokyo really came to me.
You know, blueprints are precise and they're they're sort of perfect,
and they're really well constructed and built out. And then
Tokyo for us, was you know something that was vibrant
(10:41):
and futuristic and you know, colorful and right and so
putting that together, we thought that really described, uh, the
music that we're making sort of very precise and and
and put well put together, but also bright and colorful
and has an element of fun to it.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Sounds like a lot of fun. Were you going to
say something, Kevin?
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Oh no, sir, I was agreeing. Definitely agree with that.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
Okay, And feel free to jump in Kevin anytime. It's like,
don't be shy me. We're a fund so don't worry
about that.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Of course, you got it.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
You got it. So yeah, and before we talk about
our release or release you had Panic Carefully only in
America and Slow Days, and tell us more about those releases.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah, Like I was said earlier, Panic Carefully was the
first of our songs that we did, and there was
a multiple songs that we record. At the time, we
only released a few singles. Slow Days has got a
special place in my heart. There's a video for it
on YouTube. It's very unique to what we do. It's
(11:46):
a little more spacey, a little spacey, but I just
wanted to give that song Slow Day some love yeah,
and we had I guess we had five song EP release.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we had a we had another EP
and and that was Yeah. We we sort of redid
a bunch of those songs and that formed the basis
or part of the basis for for the new full
length album, uh uh on Circuits and Mission of Hope.
So yeah, since we re recorded everything, sort of just
recreated it, we decided to take that original down just
(12:23):
with better, newer copies.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Yeah, so we've kind of compiled them all into one
place for this full length. Here, we were kicking around
a lot of songs. We just they just kept coming
out and they still are or you know, still working
on stuff. But it feels really good to get that
first bit released and now we have our full length
coming out.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
Mm hmm. And I certainly you got some great work
as well too. You also have replicants. You have Take
My Breath and a Whole New Life, and tell us
more about those.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Yeah, take my Breath we did something new. We added
a saxophone to it, and uh, it's basically a song
about falling in love being older. I was watching my
father falling in love again, and I wrote Take My
Breath about that scenario, a whole new life is I
(13:16):
was kind of coming up with the idea of that
when I was moving to Oklahoma, you know, here I
was starting with a whole new life and everything. So
that's where that song came from.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Yeah, I think a lot of those songs really sort
of about transformation and and and and moving on and
the new experiences. Seeing with the whole new life I've
I had just recently gotten married and Kevin was was
moving back to Oklahoma, and and so that's sort of
is a is a common thread that we do a
lot of the songs in our on our album. Frankly,
(13:48):
it's sort of that that storytelling aspect.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Okay, And plus you also have Mission Control closed Door Drama,
and I like that one and tell us about those.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Well, uh yeah, closed door Drama, that's it's I think
it's about witnessing, uh people's drama when you're a kid.
You know, like other houses, things are happening, you know,
keep your drama, keep the door closed, keep the drama
in the door, you know. Yeah, it was just a
reflection on that. What was there other song mission Control?
(14:22):
Mission Control? Yeah, that's like, uh, that one is about.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Uh, I mean it's it's frankly sort of about the
growing out, maturing, sort of experiencing, uh you know, some
of that sort of stuff from a from a new
vantage point, Uh, you know, seeing sort of the one
of the lines in the songs live Laugh, Love, which
(14:49):
you know you can find on on so many things
these days.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Oh my gosh, I like sleep kills A.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
We decided to to sort of take and and rebranded
as part of you know, as a lion in the song,
just to sort of.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
For that reason what you're talking about the overused saying, Yeah,
I really enjoyed recording those two songs.
Speaker 4 (15:13):
Mm hmmm. Certainly as well too. And plus you also
had stranger Things Invisible Year and Dragons as well, and
more about that.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Sure, let's start with Invisible Year. That was the whole
idea came from again COVID. You know, we're all living
these invisible lives, not leaving getting you know. Uh so
that was Invisible Year basically, and the last song Dragons, Dragons, Dragons, Yeah,
(15:43):
that's about being young, going out into the world and
you know, facing your dragon on your first day at
sea sort of a thing, you know, having a maneuver
through all that In life.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Mm hmm. And I think we are many dragons as
well too, And of course you can elaborate more and
everything else. You guys seem to have kind of refrive,
but there's only herds. Also, I have take take Me
any Place, and also connected lines and more about that, right.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Uh yeah, with connected lines. Actually, we'll go with with
take Me any Place? Yeah, really, I mean that was
that was one of our kind of earliest songs, and
and so we decided to you know, it's about dating
your spouse essentially.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Yeah, and you know you're taking a also think about
like you're just taking a stroll on a sunday, you know,
just living at the moment by watching this movie like
experience happening around you.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
It was a real sort of drive driving song in
terms of the like actually just getting in the car
and just being able to you know, drive and just
have it be one of those sort of summer night
songs that you you might hear on the radio or something.
And so that was really the sort of the vibe
we're going for and the feel for for Howard's presented,
just with that sort of driving synth line and the
(17:12):
bass and guitar and stuff like that with it mh.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
And plus you also have as well too with Transfer
Infused and Sally Girl. I like that one. Tell us
about those.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
Yeah, so Transfer it's really looking at your life and
wanting certain things from you know, the past, family members
or somebody to you know, just say they love you
no matter what. That's kind of what the song is.
(17:45):
You're longing to be loved and longing to have that
feeling as you did when you were a kid, you know,
you felt safe and everything. So that's kind of where
Transfer takes us. Sellular Girl, that's just a fun song. Again,
we have a saxophone in it, and that's a song
that you just want to put on and dance and
(18:07):
hang out with. You know. It's fast moving.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Yeah uh and then it Infused. Yeah. So, I mean
Kevin Kevin had had a great childhood and a really
interesting childhood growing up on being able to grow up
on a campground. Yeah, on a literal campground that was
a ranger.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
That's so.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Yeah, so part of its kind of retelling part of
parts of that and some of the you know, things
that you experienced whenever you grew up in that sort
of life.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yeah. Yeah, as you know, run around all this acreage
of camping and all that. I would say that you
definitely captured the explanation with that.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
That was this all up in Canada, that you're doing
a lot at the camping Kevin.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
You know, in Canada everybody has a camper and uh
you just see it roll out on Friday everywhere. And
we definitely had our camper and spend a lot of
time camping. Very beautiful, you know, as you can imagine,
it's big.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
Mountains, okay. And plus you've probably done some as well
to Andrew a little bit.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
I mean I was in the Uh it's been it's
been a minute since I've gone camping, but you know
I was in the Boy Scouts like most folks, and
we did our camping all over the place and so uh,
you know, all different all different levels, uh some some
some nicer than others.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
And certainly did as well too. And we'll be talking
about the other two songs who play at the end
of the audio interview. We encourage over you do that

We're back to Andrew Hale and Kevin Dawson Blueprint Tokio
from Spector Music Group here on the Mike Waiters Show,
and let's talk about the release Say Anything will be
playing at the end from Neon Circuits and the Mission
of Hope. Tell us more about that song and one
he's probed to wright say Anything.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Yeah, so say Anything with a song that's it's gone
through a lot of different iterations, but it h you know,
the original idea came together pretty quickly, you know, zeroing
in on sort of the storyline aspect of it was.
It was a really interesting thing, you know, to you know,
sort of about those those key experiences that you have
(22:30):
as a teenager, young adult, things like that watching scary movies,
hanging out with friends, sort of having those youthful moments
and and just the camaraderie that comes along with that.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Yeah, that's it. My original thought was seeing kids gathered
together watching a horror movie, and and that song just
came you know, being young, youthful with your buddies. So
the ideas really came from there and started growing turned
into what it is now.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Oh my gosh, I think about horror movies. Where where
are some of the horror movies that watched? What was
your favorite one?
Speaker 2 (23:08):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (23:08):
My god?
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Oh boy?
Speaker 7 (23:10):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (23:11):
You know, I think the classics, The Friday of the
Thirteenth and The Night ran Elm Streets are still sort
of my favorite. Even the even the worst ones are
still are still pretty good.
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Yeah, there's one a deep cut for anybody listening. It's
called Sleepaway Camp. And I lived at a camp, so
that movie just terrified me. But you know, another one
of my favorite stories is Stephen King's it in that movie.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
Oh yes, yes, you had the clown, you had the
little kid? Who is it Brandon Crane or something like that?
Speaker 3 (23:47):
Yes, and such a fan of that. I have about
three songs with Stephen King's references in there.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Which is which one is your favorite one? What stood
up in the movie for you? Uh?
Speaker 3 (24:00):
There's a line called dead lights and uh it says
the dead lights basically, the dead lights are coming for
you when you see the dead lights. And I use
that line dead lights in a song we have.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
Okay, and then how about some of your other ones too.
It's like, what stood off for you for Stephen King? What?
Speaker 2 (24:23):
What are some other songs that have Steve Stephen King
lines in it?
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Oh, let's see. Gosh, I have to look at the lyrics.
I'm sorry, I feel embarrassed. Let's see. I think it
was Stranger Things. Yes, yeah, Stranger Things is a good one. Obviously,
has kind of a cheap, cheeky title to it. Yeah,
(24:47):
as we were doing it, it sort of sounded like
it was in that that same universe basically. But yeah,
so uh yeah, but those those sort of spooky Stephen
King esque elements or or something we like to try
to inject as little easter eggs. I guess you might
call it and I'm not the other song, but it's
(25:09):
not released yet, only in January, so maybe you'll hear
that down the road.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Yeah, well definitely, I have you back out. We'll talk
about Honey in January. But right now, let's talk about
stand and Delivery. We'd be playing that as well. Tell
us more about that song than what you inspire to
write it.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Yeah. I when it was put together, Andy, the piano
is just beautiful, so it moved me. I was in
a situation in my life where I was needing to
like get up and get healthy, you know, get moving again.
So that's kind of what the line of Standing the
Liver came from. It's telling myself to get up, let's go,
(25:49):
let's make things happen, you know, and it's it ends
with a with a triumph in this song. You know,
you have this situation happening at the beginning. At the end,
it's fun. He's at a New Year's Eve party. Everything's fine,
starting a new year. Everything is going to work out.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Yeah, I think I think that we try we try
to inject those those you know, real life stories and
life experiences and things like that into into our music
and and uh, you know, ultimately try to try to
remain relatively hopeful and optimistic in most of the songs.
You know, you can always everybody has their dark moments
(26:34):
and negative things that you know, you can still sort
of weave in. But yeah, that's that's one thing that
we've just sort of, uh, we didn't really set out
to do that, but it just sort of accidentally came
out and it's been working for us.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
So yeah, that's really interesting. Seemed like that and why
don't see basically lyrics on most songs.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
There's always a bit of truth in there.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
You know.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
You start off with uh speaking out something and it
just comes out, you know, and once you get the
heart of the song together, you can really work around
it to see what kind of story you're gonna tell.
M h. So that's that's a lot of the times
what happens there.
Speaker 2 (27:14):
Yeah, definitely, some are are much more definitely something much
more realistic, and others are are definitely more more storytelling
that we've we've come up with. But you know, we
we like, we like fiction, we like nonfiction, auto autobiographies,
you know, anything like that.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
So anything's possible.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
Okay, what some of your favorite nonfiction fiction books and
how your favorite authors? This is interesting?
Speaker 2 (27:37):
Oh uh, you know, I'm a I'm really a fan.
I'm honestly kind of a nerd to that. And I'm
a fan of biographies. That's what I'm I'm like, you know,
could be entertainers, could be presidents, could be ex presidents,
(27:57):
any you know, anybody and everybody. That's sort of my
my thing that I'm really into. And if I'm going
to be reading a book, okay, well for me, it's
mostly a children's book because I have two kids, and
so yeah, I'm not certain what my favorite book would be.
You know, Christine.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
I read that when I was young, by back to
Stephen King Christine, and that's kind of has a place
in my heart. I turned to it every now and then.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Okay, just like the was that nineteen was the fifty
nine sixties?
Speaker 3 (28:31):
Nineteen eighty four.
Speaker 4 (28:33):
Yeah, that's the one, the Fury, I remember that. I
remember the car itself being that model too. So that's
what stood out for me right there. And and of
course you know, just one more as well too. And
if there hasn't if there's other music we haven't covered,
if there are songs we haven't touched down, tell us
more about some of those.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
I think the I think we touched on replicants maybe, Yeah, replicants,
that's what I thought we were talking about. Applicants is
a song we have on the course line is nineteen
eighty four. It's a It's really fun to see because
it's just a rapid fire of all these things from
your childhood, you know.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Yeah, and it's it's you know, sort of on the surface,
it's it's uh, you know, you can look at it
purely as a nostalgic sort of thing of referencing all
these things. But you know, I think if you look
at it, you know, more broader context for the overall album,
or even just as a broader commentary on things, you know,
looking back and that sort of stuff from from a
(29:34):
viewpoint of nowadays of now, you know, is it is
it still positive?
Speaker 8 (29:39):
Is it? Is it?
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Kind of It's up to the listener to decide how
they how they want to take it.
Speaker 4 (29:45):
Yeah, okay, and we're gonna say something else, Kevin too.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Or no, I was just gonna agree with that. Yeah,
nineteen eighty four hope or replicants is what we call it. Yeah,
I hope to hear some good feedback from people out
there on that. It's been getting its tracking, people are
liking it. Yeah, so I'm excited to see how well
it does.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
Okay, well, certainly looking forward to that. Where can we
find all your music, guy, guys.
Speaker 2 (30:12):

we'll we'll obviously, uh sit down and finish some of

EP album something like that's some kind of release of
of music. But yeah, we that'll you know, we're we're
out there supporting our Neon Circuits and the Mission of
(31:17):
Hope album right now, and and uh really really want
to see that that move.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
All right, Well, certainly check that out. And who do
you consider biggest influence in the careers?
Speaker 3 (31:29):
Uh, Well, that's tough.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
I mean, for me, there's a lot of there's a
lot of people, you know, musically, I have lots of
musical influences, but you know, I had a lot of educators,
you know, my parents certainly all that growing up. I
think that's the probably the proper answer there. But yeah,
you know, I mean anybody who's supported me, given me
(31:55):
kind words, congratulations, good advice. Uh, you know, they've certainly
helped shape who I who I am today.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Yeah, it's it's the same as me. I have a
lot of friends, family, people that supported me over the years,
people that let us sleep on couches and floors you
know when we're playing shows. You know how that goes.
But yeah, it's just a lot of people over the years. Uh,
it's really touched us and helped us out.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Okay, And what's the best advice you can give the
A at this point?
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Do what you love?
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Yeah, Yeah, I think stay staying true to yourself and
not compromising on your your internal morals that everybody should
ideally have. Just yeah again, stay true to yourself.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
Yeah, and make sure you enjoy it, because if you
don't enjoy it, you better quit.
