Speaker 1 (00:11):
This is the Country Crossover thanks to Lindon Contracting. Jamie
McKay hosts of the Country and just arrive back from
the country, Jamie, good afternoon and welcome home.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yeah, good to be home too. I must say, Andy,
loved my two weeks in the States, but it's good
to be home and just spending some time there reminds
you how lucky we are to live in this country.
We are truly God's own. And thanks for the musical introduction,
great song from the Stones.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Yeah, the thing today is horses Garth shacks as we
just talk about horses for whatever resent day. But anyway,
I'll say one thing. You leave the country. New Zealand
starts winning cricket tests in India. We have our best
week of sport, arguably in history. When you bugger off
something isn't that.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
I noted that and I was following it from overseas
because I think the first weekend I was away, they
said it was the greatest weekend in New Zealand sporting history.
The next weekend they thought they might have superseded that. Yeah,
so it's great. I can tell you that. You know,
you get wall to wall coverage of sport in the States,
but trying to get some coverage of New Zealand v

(01:12):
India and the cricket wasn't that easy to do, or
the America's Cup for that matter. But I saw plenty
of baseball Andy. Of course, the Dodgers have won the
World Series over the New York Yankees. When I was
in New York, I took the opportunity to jump on
the subway and go up to the Bronx and go
to Yankee Stadium. What a you know, what a what

(01:35):
a fantastic stadium that is. And in Boston, of course
Fenway Park where the Red Sox play. So you know,
you can say what you want about America, but no
one does live sport like those guys. We actually went
also another bucket list of Madison Square Garden, where Trump
had his big rally. Last weekend, we went and watched
a pre season NBA game, the New York Knicks up

(01:57):
against the I think it was the Minnesota Timberwall. But
what a magnificent, magnificent arena that has seen so many
great sporting events over the years.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
I watched that final game of the World Series. The
thing that intrigues me about baseball was that bubble gum
consumption is encouraged and the amount of hiking in public
is ridiculous.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, it seems to be the way, doesn't it. They
they're always chewing on gum, and some of the guys,
I guess it's a power game. Some of them don't
look that athletic, if you know what I mean. I
mean they're not. They're quite solid and stocky. But I
guess in that game, you've just got to be able
to smash a ball. And I know that.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
I know that.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
All the talk heading into the World Series when we
were over there was about Aaron Judge from the New
York Yankees and the guy from the Dodgers that the
Japanese guy have forgotten his name, but he's basically the
best baseball player in the world. And it was all
about those two going head to head. But in the
end it was another bloke who battered the Dodger's home.

(03:01):
So look that they just they just go manic on
their sport, Monte Andy. They also go manic on their
politics as well. I mean, obviously we were at the
height of Trump versus Carmela.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
He's just a narrator, isn't Here's a new Mexico yesterday.
I heard the heard him on Hosting This Morning. You
just got to laugh.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Well, he's an entertainer, I mean, is he a president. Well,
he's been one and he Yeah. Honestly, he's a deeply,
deeply flawed human being. But I will say this about him.
He's seventy eight years of age, and he had the
energy he's got on the campaign trail is unbelievable. He's

(03:43):
a bit like our seventy eight or seventy nine year
old Winston Peter's just unbelievable energy for that age. I mean,
you compare him to poor old, sleepy Joe Biden. He's amazing.
And Carmela has initially taken him America a weebit by storm,
and it looked like she was going to get home.

(04:04):
But the more people here from Carmela, the more she
speaks and riddles and word sell and she is the
John Mitchell of American politics. And I've been saying it
the time all the time, Andy, I honestly think Trump's
going to sneak home, and he's going to sneak home
off the back of those seven swing states basically in America,

(04:27):
seven states out of fifty decide the election. If you're
in anywhere else in the country, your vote is almost meaningless.
It's their electoral college system. And I just think he's
going to sneak home even though the polls have them
neck and neck.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
It's fascinating how it's going to unravel the heay just coincidently,
before we carry on on Netflix the Turnaround. It's about
a guy called Trey Turner. A fans instigates the guy
just wasn't performing on a massive contract. As a twenty
five minute documents you on Netflix, Jamie, go and watch
it tonight. I recommend it. Now. You've got a bit
of a collaboration going on at the moment, haven't you,
with a cut and brewery and a certain chip company.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Well, I think we can name them on Hokanui, can't we?
And yeah, Emerson's great, great friends and we've got a
great partnership with them over a number of years. I
love Emerson's I love Richard Emerson. What a legend that
bloke is. And of course Heartland Ships, which is founded
by a South Canterbury farmer by the name of Raymond Bowen.

(05:28):
Now Raymond decided I think fourteen years ago to it
was a great He was a spud grower and he
was huge operation, and he was growing a whole lot
of spuds to supply to someone else to make potato chips.
And he thought, no, bugret, I think I can make
my own and do it better. So he started up
Heartland chips. And you know that they are that. I

(05:49):
like them because they're flat. I'm not a big fan
of the crinkled ones. I like the kettle fries or whatever.
But they're flat and they're thick and they're crunchy, and
they've got a great taste. So there's the salt and vinegar, maple,
bacon and green onion. And of course Emerson's had to
try and match those potato chips with the bear and
they've gone with the farmer's paw. The chips, by the way,

(06:12):
are called the farmer's cut, and the farmer's paw is
an extra crispy pale ale. And I think, Andy, you've
had firsthand experience of how good it is.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yeah. I'm actually in Tiernia last week a reclass for
South and Chuck A and a couple of others went
along there and I overindulged. I didn't realize how high
a percentage it was, and I kind of paid the consequences.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Well, that's the trouble. We let you country boys into
town and your space drinkers, which you can chug down
until you basically bloat yourself and still not get into
too much trouble. But yeah, you start getting into these bears,
and look, the farmer's paw is only I think five
point four percent.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
So you mean only house teeth, and normal beer is
about four to four point two around here.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, yeah, it is, or to what you wanted to do.
Who's go to America because they've got different alcohol laws
compared to us. They have got some kick ass bears
that will knock your socks off and knock you over
as well. Look, the average IPA over there is like
or APAs, like seven or eight percent. You have a
couple of pints of that andy and you're well on

(07:20):
your way. Not that I'm encouraging it, No, we never do, Jamie.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah, but gave me golf for you this afternoon. What's
this story all about.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Well, I've come back with a bit of a cold
and I'm not feeling one hundred percent. I just thought
i'd throw that out there early in case it doesn't
go my way. So what happened was last year we
were playing golf up here at Otago and we were
looking someone discovered an old, an old trophy that had
been stuck to the wall. It was an old putter

(07:49):
and it was an inter club between Otago and Otatara,
the Impicago Golf Club, and it had last been played
for in the eighties. And I thought, well, hang on,
I know a few blocks who played down there, namely
Pup Shepherd and Jimmy Cowan, so I thought we would
renew the rivalry. So last year, last November, we took

(08:10):
a touring team of twenty four of us down there Otatara.
We thought we'd tidied up tidied up Pup and his mates.
We lost eleven and a half to a half. We
got absolutely kicked on their home patch. But you know,
Otago Bell McEwan's a bit of a it's a locals course,
so I think they'll struggle. So they're coming up. They're

(08:31):
playing us this afternoon as we speak. To be perfectly honest, Andy,
because this is a pre record.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
So I just.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Can't be the thought of losing to Pup sheperd. I
used to play footy with them back in the eighties.
He's a great bloke, very influential in Southland rugby. Not
only played one hundred games for Southland, but he's also
bankrolled the Woodlands Rugby Club and it's been a true
machine over the years. So he's been a real contributor
to rugby on and off the paddock in South London.

(08:59):
Jimmy how And as I said, he's coming up. He's
always good value. And Rata Smith pound for pound. I
don't know whether you remember much about Rata when he
was playing, hecularly farmer. Look pound for pound, that bloke
would be one of the best rugby players to have
ever laced up boots for Southland. I don't think he
got a hundred. I think he might have got I
think he might have got about eighty games for Southland.

(09:21):
But gee, he was good he I think he started
out as a hooker and finished out up as a
number eight.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
It's eighty more than me. Hey, just finally as well
the U Black's England Ethan de Greed on the Elter
must have been a bad boy or something.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
I don't know. I mean, I don't know Ethan de
greet I know he played played as Rugby and Riversdale
or he played for under sixteen's for Riversdale. Everyone I
everyone I know who knows them says he's a great bloke,
a great bloke, and I know he's very loyal to
the Southland Stags and he's just been a wonderful success story.
I don't know what's happened over there, but it just

(09:55):
seems bizarre to me that all blacks would break curfews.
I mean, we don't know the story behind that. It's
a shame really because I think we need him against England.
Minds you, the blowho's replacing him, to be fair has
gone pretty well to to Marty Williams in the front row.
And the thing with rugby, it's a bit like having

(10:16):
a radio job in some ways. Andy you never want
to give a suck or an even break, and Ethan
might be regretting giving Williams a go, but I'm sure
he'll be back in the starting fifteen because they've got
I mean, what a brutal tour this is England. Hopefully
we might get past Hopefully we'll get past them. But
g then is it France or Ireland and France? G

(10:38):
that's tough. I mean if he can win. I don't know,
if he can win two of those three games, I
think this is razor of the All Blacks. If they
can win two of those three tests over the next
three weekends, I think they'll be doing very well.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Yeah, I think they'll struggle against England's South Jamie' better
carry on. Always appreciate your time here, fun at your golf.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Yeah, well I will, and make sure are you coming
up for the launch of the Farmer's Poor Bear And
because if you've already had a guzzle of that and
you could try the chip sandy, they might be a
bit easier on your system. So that's next Tuesday, Yes,
Melbourne Cup day at Emerson's. You can. You're welcome to
drive up from Southland. We've got the Bear on tap
at lunchtime and after that we're gonna have a chip sandwich,

(11:20):
white bread butter chips dip and then another white piece
of white bread and butter on top. How good is that?

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Sounds good? Bit of tea sauce to go with it as.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Well, Joe, No no, no, no, no, no no no no
you from look you can take the boy out of
Belfa on.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
The side of a good chips mat, You've got a
tea sauce.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
No, you're a philistine, See you later.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
And Jamie McKay and the Country Crossover theas to Linton contracting.
Catherine ryders up next as part of the South and
