(00:31):
Hello, and welcome to the WarpShelf. I'm Frank Durant, I'm DeShawn
Vasquez. We are two artists whodecide what belongs on your shelf. Yes,
it can be the ethereal shelf, like a metaphorisical shelf, or it
can be a literal shelf, asin like a collection of physical media.
It all depends on where you canget it, accessibility, and what it
(00:54):
means to you, what's worth takingwith you. Yeah, and today it's
breaking down to twenty twenty three guys. As people who review media. You
know, we do these podcasts. We put out a lot of different reviews,
we do written reviews, we doyou know, social media reviews and
stuff like that. Like, wedo a lot of stuff. We keep
(01:15):
tugging about everything we watch other thanthe AFI list. You can't put us
in a box and I like that. And so so what we cover,
what we what we kind of coverover the year. It's just kind of
the stuff that we love and highlight. But what we have seen over the
year is what we're gonna cover today. We're gonna talk about what we did
(01:38):
over the year. So like events, concerts, we're gonna talk about games,
we're gonna talk about movies and TVshows, so we're gonna go through
them all. This is a yearlytradition we do. We used to do
this back when we did Real BooksDon't Have Batman, which was our old
podcast. If you're still with usfrom those day, is you you did
(02:00):
Real g but then uh but webut we're today we're gonna continue that tradition.
We hopefully will not go for long, but we are. We are
discussing in the entire year that justasked us in retrospect. So if there
(02:20):
wasn't a lot to cover, thatmight be sad. Just like, oh,
I didn't get them anything done thisyear. I didn't see ship.
I didn't do ship did Yeah, like you're at least could have seen something,
yeah, especially like posts, especiallylike post lockdown. I feel like
instinctly, I'm just like I amgetting fucking out there because I did not
have this opportunity before. Nice.Nice Uh So I feel like, you
(02:43):
know, we'll basically we'll go oversome events first. We'll go over some
events and and you know, likeconcerts and stuff like that. Then we'll
get into uh then games because there'sprobably gonna be a shorter list, and
then we'll get into uh that prettymuch everything. Yea, I'm sure.
I'm sure movies and TV shows willbe the big ones, will tell you,
(03:06):
and books and books will be abig one for me. In previous
years, we've separated them out more. Deshaun has one whole list of all
of the things, and I justhave it separated in games and and meet
and t TV. I should probablyjust move it all to one list.
I don't know why I haven't severallists, but you know, I just
kind of like the way the wayGoogle Docs functions with your categories if you
(03:30):
add a heading and you can justuse the scroll bar to like go to
each one and just tap on itand makes it much more intuitive. See,
you're fucking learning thing. I'm learningthings. You're probably learning things watching
this. You're learning Google shit, which is important. I've only learned it
because I have a big fucking tabletopcampaign that I've been crafting at a giant
Google doc for it, and havingthat be organized as very helpful. Uh.
(03:54):
But basically, Deshana, what didyou what did you go to in
twenty twenty three? Okay, solike events wise, this can be going
to see a concert, I alsoadded like times I went to go see
a stand up comedian or went toa theme park or something, so like
anything anything outside of like going tothe movies that required a chunk of my
(04:14):
time really where I had to leavethe house for it. So the first
thing is I saw the comedian AkashSing at the start of the year.
You might know if you peruse likeviral videos of like comedians and stuff.
He had a really funny I'd callit a special in big quotes because it's
(04:35):
only like a twenty minute it's onlylike a twenty minute thing. But it
was called bring back up who inreference to yes, yes, yep,
all right, So if you've seenthat, I went to go see him.
Nice, that's great. Yeah, when he came to Boston and super
super funny, very funny. Yeah, he's he was just you know,
(04:57):
one on one standard you know storystand up material. And then at the
end he had two of his comedianbuddies come up specifically for CrowdWork. Oh
cool, that's fun, which isnice. It's good that it's not the
focus. I feel like crowd workfor the entire time would get real tedious.
It's rough. You're just like Okay, we're just going around and it
(05:18):
kind of takes a specific comedian tolike not have it feel so boring.
Yeah, exactly. Then after that, the next thing I went to go
see is a live show for NotAnother D and D Podcast, which is
a live play D and D podcastmade up of, for the most part,
(05:40):
college humor alumni. Oh yes,no, I've actually they're they're coming
to Medford like next week or something. So yeah, I was getting ads
for that. Yeah, Brad Murphy, Emily Axford, et cetera. They've
had a bunch of campaigns. Yeah, it was fun it. I purposefully
(06:00):
tried to catch up on at leastthe first full campaign that they had done
before I went to go see it, just in case. And that is
a lot. We are talking, you know, anywhere from like an hour
and a half to two and ahalf hour long episodes, and campaign one
is one hundred episodes. Oh mygod. I was already a good chunk
of the way through it. Andthen once I got my tickets, I
was around the like seventy mark Ithink, And this was like months in
(06:25):
advance. I'm like, I haveto at least finish Campaign one before I
go see them and it was good. Yeah, it was great. They
were funny. Yeah, yeah, very funny. But I also still haven't
started the second campaign because I feellike I went through so much. I'm
like not ready to jump back infor a whole new adventure just yet.
(06:46):
So after that, oh, frontrow seats for that, by the way,
that was awesome. Hell yeah. After that, when Burt Kreischer came
to Boston at the TV Garden,I went to go see nice. That's
cool, that's great. That wasalso pretty good seats and a lot of
fun. Oh yeah. So it'sinteresting seeing the contrasts between the comedians from
like say the Wilburg to the Wangto like the TV Garden or like what
(07:10):
I went to go see Bilburg atFenway Park. Yeah, there is a
different energy between like the intimacy ofa venue like the Wilburne like a stadium
slash arena. Absolutely even for music, you know, like absolutely for comedians
and music. It's like it's verydifferent than just being like at different capacities,
you know. Yeah, it's kindof like the act different. So
(07:33):
what's listed here is six slags greatadventure, but really I should have just
added my whole New Jersey trip.So to mark my thirtieth birthday, I
went down to New Jersey to meetup with two online friends that I have
known since I was fourteen years old, fair that we've never had like the
(07:53):
big irl meetup, and we did. So I went down there for like
a long weekend, like four days, and we just we just hung out
and we went to Six Flags, went to this great Korean barbecue place.
I made them watch Clerks and MallRats. Because it's my first time going
down to Jersey. I made surethat we went to and we went to
was it Leonardo specifically so we couldgo to the quick stop so I could
(08:16):
take a picture of that outside.Which was surreal experience when you've watched a
movie so much and you end upat like the location it was shot right,
it's it was. I was kindof quiet. It was weird.
It's weird even when years ago whenI went and saw you know, the
Rocky Steps, you know, likeI know that's just the Philadelphia Museum,
(08:39):
but like, you know, theRocky Steps, it was strange to me
because it's like one of those thingsthat I grew up watching and you know,
like I've read, you know, watched a bunch. It's just weird
to be like all of a suddenthere you're like, it's hard to describe,
like it's it's like an out ofbody experience. It's really odd.
So that was fun. And thenonce I got back, I went to
(09:03):
an exhibit that Boston had put upon Newberry Street for the Art of the
Brick Tour, which is the likeLego sculptures, like the very specific ones.
That was really awesome. That issuper cool, like original sculptures as
well as like flat panelings to tryand homage famous paintings like there was a
Starry Night but in Lego. Thatis cool, that kind of stuff.
(09:28):
Then after that was the first timeI went to go see Beatlejuice the musical
when it came to Boston and Isaw it at the Citizens Bank Opera House.
That's cool. Then after that wedon't need again we switch guys.
Check out the episode. Check outthe episode won't we won't talk about it
here but literally. Then after thatI went to a Candlelight the Best of
(09:50):
Zelda, which is the second Candlelightlittle concert, but I've been to the
first one being the Best of HansZimmer And did I do a candle We
did a candlelight with that, youdid? It was the one hundred years
of Warner Brothers, wasn't it onehundred year Warner Brothers. Yeah. In
in February we went and that wasthat was actually really really nice. It
was in like a really nice churchin Boston, you know, the at
(10:11):
the the one that's near Copley Square. What did you on the Edge get
band wise? Did you get astring quartet? Ah? Yes, yes,
okay, we did. Yeah, that's what I got for Hans Zimmer.
For for Zelda, we got apianist. Oh that's cool. So
they do change it up. Okay. I thought it was always strings no
matter what when you're going to acandle light concert, but I would guys,
(10:35):
I know you're probably gonna get toomany ads once we literally say the
name candlelight concert. I'm sure myphone's like, this is gonna be like
up Baby Fever Up, Download theFever up because they they are like ferocious
with their ads about it. Butit is really nice, nice one that
(10:56):
fits your taste. Go see one. Yeah. They do a bunch of
things depending on the season, likearound October and such. They do like
horror movie themes, and it's likethey do Christmas songs and they even do
like specific nerd stuff like best ofZelda, like the best of Hans Zimmer.
I've seen one of those, justlike best of like anime themes.
(11:16):
Yeah, my ours was Warner Brothersand it was cool to get like you
know, Lord of the Rings stuffand like that was that was just awesome,
Like you're just like this is great, like it's fun to fun to
go to a nice concert like that. So after that I went to go
see immediately just like two video gamerelated concerts in a row candlelight, and
(11:37):
then I saw Video Games Live.I forget what I forget what the uh
the venue is? You might knowit. It's like right from the it's
like literally down the block from likethe Harvard stop on the Orange and the
Red. Oh, some fucking bigvenue. It's got big, it's got
those big pillars and stuff. Yes, yes, I do know what you're
(12:00):
saying. But oh, I thinkit's literally the bs O, the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, the yeah you wentto. Yeah that is a beautiful building.
Yeah, that's it. It's abeautiful building. So I've been for
the you know, like it's andit's great, it's beautiful. So after
that was another stand up comedian, this time Randy Feltface, which, if
(12:22):
you're unfamiliar with, is a standup comedian who basically uses a purple yeah,
the purple puppet the gum tree storythat went viral on Yeah yeah,
yeah, he came to Boston.I went to go see him. Super
funny, and it also made merealize that, like the balcony seats at
the Wilbur aren't too bad if you'reat least in the front. Okay,
(12:45):
it's actually it's actually not a badspot to be at least if you're going
to see a stand up show forother stuff, maybe not necessarily. It's
a great venue, you know, not many bad seats. Yeah. I've
been to the Wilbur so many timesnow, Yeah, especially since every time
I see a stand up comedian theytend to be there. So that's it.
I mean, that's impressive. I'veonly worked there, so I haven't
been there for anything other than whenwe saw clerks Clerks. Yeah, that
(13:09):
was the first time I was like, I'm going to be on this side.
I'm usually on the other. Yeah, for sure, just like wait,
hold on then The next thing afterthat was this was a late Mother's
Day gift for my mom. Wewent to go see Circus Late Cordio.
Oh very nice? Uh what whatwhat is Cordio? What's the theme?
(13:30):
What is that? Like? Whatwas? Because I know they all have
different themes. Yeah, they allhave like different themes. It's tough to
describe. It's story is framed aroundlike a circus, like a circus ring
master, like trying to accept death. Ah okay, yeah, but in
like a but in like bugs, you know, like butterfly. It's very
(13:56):
much like a It's very much likelife is so whimsical though it's like sort
of like the life is beautiful approachto something like horrible surrounding you. Okay,
but very great performances. I didget a few decent like videos of
it because recording was allowed. It'salways nice when it is. I go
(14:16):
to so many events where they're justlike, chop your hand off if you
pull out that phone tape record this. Then after that, I went to
fan X for Boston. So thatwas the one convention that I did of
the year. Very cool, verycool, and how was it? It
was fun? Yeah? Good time? Are you gonna go next year.
(14:39):
I don't know. I always checkto see how what the guests are.
Yeah, what we got from hackedwith the guests, So it's not it's
not a bad it only will hopefullyonly get better. Yeah, but I
always like check ahead of time.Yeah, understandable. I was salty that
Sam Raimi had to ca because hewas basically I'm like, damn it.
(15:01):
That was one of the big onesI really wanted to do so after a
fan X with Boston. Another comedianthat I had seen was Godfrey. He's
a comedian that's been around for awhile, but he's always been kind of
under the radar. He's another onethat started to get bigger traction because of
like viral videos. The one thatpeople know is he did a bunch of
(15:24):
DJ vladd interviews for a while, and he's made a bunch of videos like
there's this one great video where hemakes fun of the fact that Dominicans and
Puerto Ricans don't want to admit thatthey have black ancestry. Really fucking funny
video, and it's true if you'veever grown up in a Puerto Rican family.
(15:46):
That is absolutely on point, butsuper funny. Probably the funniest I
had seen of the year, LikeI was, I was laughing my ass
off. Oh nice. Cool. Then after seeing Godfrey, the very next
(16:06):
thing was going to see Evil Deadthe musical with you Yeah, which we
taught. There's a whole episodes,so don't know, we're not gonna talk
about it here. Then after thatwas the Sonic Symphony World Tour, which
is the official like tour that Sega'sputting up for Sonic Music and Crush forty
Music by extension. I had mybuddy, which is actually one of the
(16:26):
online buddies I went to go seein New Jersey, come up from New
York to stay over for the weekendso we can go see it because he's
probably the biggest Sonic the Hedgehog fan, I know. Wow. And we
had fucking second row seats, beautiful, beautiful and it was a damn good
time. And then the last eventbefore the year was out was I went
(16:47):
to I think it was in Ithink it was specifically in Bu. Yeah,
I think it was like a BUperformance to go see them do Hydrogen
Jukebox, which is a Philip Glassorchestra. Yeah. Yeah, that's cool,
that's yeah, that's very nice.I didn't know you did that.
That's awesome, but that's it formy events. We did uh trip to
(17:14):
mantri All in February, so thatwas kind of cool to go out of
the country, you know, likeit had first time with the passport actually
using it, so that was likea kind of bigger thing that we did,
you know, and checked out abunch of museums up there and stuff
like that, so that was thatwas really cool. And it was a
festival of lights during the time,so when we were there, so it
(17:37):
was like they had really cool lightsset up and everything. You can check
out my Instagram if you want tosee some of the shots on it,
but like it is, it isreally cool for just kind of just just
a beautiful place. You got tosee some beautiful you know, architecture,
you got to see all those beautifulchurches, and of course I got to
try I'm from New Hampshire, whichyou know there's we're known for poutine,
(18:02):
but like I've always never tried poutinebecause I was like, I was like,
cheese curts on my bench, friesand gravy. I'm good. I
was like, I'm that doesn't soundright to me. Amazing. I've had
poutine. It's great, that's thething it says. Then I tried it
in uh In in Montreal, andI really loved it, even even the
(18:22):
McDonald when we were leaving, wetried the McDonald's poutine and that was even
good, which is something you're like, what this even the French, even
the McDonald's can pull off wing good? Oh what greasy shit put on your
potatoes always taste good? Yes,and uh and then I, of course,
now I've tried a lot of poutineall over New Hampshire and it's quite
(18:44):
good, but you know, beautiful. It was beautiful to do that,
and it was cool to like, you know, actually use our passports and
we just drove there, so likethat was interesting too, to just be
like, okay, we are crossingthe fucking Bard. Concert wise, we
saw I saw a young Gravy atthe stew Arena. He had a he
(19:07):
had a concert there, which likehe definitely didn't know, uh, how
big the new arena was going tobe. I assume he he saw that
he was being contacted by College,so I think he assumed College in New
Hampshire small venue. He didn't understandthis new arena is a goddamn stadium,
like it's a it's a like.So he came out and you could tell
(19:30):
he was like Jesus Christ. ILike you could tell he was like I
Am not prepared, like you know, like he was like because he basically
had a DJ and himself, whichwas super funny, like no backup dancers,
no anybody backing him up. Likeit was just like obvious that he
thought it was much smaller, whichwas kind of cool in a way,
like because he had to give likea yeah, and that was like kind
(19:56):
of like the crowd. Yeah,Like it was kind of like a like
we were talking about like big performances, he did a He kind of did
a small room performance to a bigcrowd. So that was kind of cool.
Where was the arena? It's it'sin Manchester. Yeah, where where
I love now, you know, like so not to dox myself or anything,
(20:18):
but you know, like that's thestew Arena is very close and it's
it's going to be the venue forGranite Con in twenty twenty four. So
I'm excited that granted Con is branchingout from its DoubleTree Hotel location, which
has tons of room, but actuallygoing over and gonna do like the fan
expo look yeah, being like we'retaking over on an area. At least
(20:41):
it's accessible. There have been likecertain shows that I would have liked to
have gone to last year, butit was usually in like Mansfield, which
is like waves, yeah, outof the way like that. That happened
twice, I think because I thinkDisturbed was going there. I'm like,
fuck, would have liked to seethe start and then a lot more sets
(21:02):
on tour right now, And thatwas another one that'd be fun, that'd
be fun. Buddy of mine Sawwas really excited about it and so and
said it was great, But Idid. We didn't go to many other
concerts uh this year, you know, saving some money because you know,
house and everything. Yeah, butwe did go see Hosier as our big
(21:25):
concert. We paid some big moneyto go be really close to be like,
so we had really great seats tosee Hosier and it was wonderful.
It was at the New Hampshire Pavilion, which is uh kind of it's even
far for us. It's like anhour it's like an hour or forty five
minutes away from from us here, but it's near like weird Beach in New
(21:48):
Hampshire and like but it's it was. It was it was a nice venue
of really nice. They've really upgradedit since I was a kid and I
went to Warp tour there and itwas just like a mud pit that they
so how slapped the venue into, you know, like like uh, they
like and I've seen I've seen alot of shows at the Bank Pavilion,
so to see it be upgraded theway it is now, it's very nice.
(22:11):
Actually it looks it looks gorgeous.I'm definitely gonna have to go to
more shows. But I will saythe driving out situation at the New Hampshire
Bank Pavilion is bad. So likeif you try to park there, it's
bad. If you try to uberout, it's bad. Like it's just
like it's not a good situation toleave there. Because they were like,
(22:33):
yeah, we should do a majorvenue with one road to leave. That
should be totally fine. Right.Yeah, It's like doing any big event
like at the TD Garden and stufflike, ain't nobody's gonna want to drive
Like you're gonna take the tea andyou're gonna hate it because the green Line's
gonna be stuffed to the fucking gillsand you're gonna be lucky if you can
(22:53):
like squirm your way out and notmiss your stop exactly. And it's just
like one of those things that you'rejust like, but uh, you know,
not not too much event wise orconcert wise this year. So but
that's pretty much. Yet was sorrygoing to see Hosier So and Young Gravy.
But next on my doc category wiseis gaming nice, which I by
(23:18):
the way, twenty twenty four.I do want to do better with concerts
this year because it's like there wasmany concerts this year. I looked in
the face, saw the tickets andand like you know, had sticker shocks
for a lot of them, andwas like, eh, but now I'm
like why did I not see thosepeople? I love those people, you
know, like why would I notsee these bands when I went. Yeah,
(23:38):
that's why I was telling you already, Like if you said you and
Mary were interested in going to gosee Hadestown, yeah those tickets now,
not later, get the Haiti ticketsnow? Yeah it maybe it might be
the movie, might be the movielike I got mine already nice. Uh,
And you know, well I'm alreadydoing better. We already saw a
(24:00):
beatle Field Juice to musical. Soyou know, where are you doing?
Yeah? Right, And Deshaun alreadysaid we saw Evil Dead the musical,
so we did that too. AndI saw a lot of local theater.
Mary's sister is the head of Epping'slocal theater, and we saw a bunch
of shows over there for their localproduction. So I saw a lot of
nieces doing a lot of roles, which is nice. It's good to try
(24:23):
and beef that up. I'm tryingto do the same but for movies,
which is funny because I already watcha shitload of movies every year. But
I think it's because I saw EdgarWright being like, I've watched a movie
three hundred and sixty five movies andYou're like, I'm just like and I'm
just like, mother, I coulddo that. I could totally do that.
Yeah you could, de Sean, you know, I know you could.
(24:45):
Yeah. I mean, anyway, let's we'll talk about the more we
actually get to movies. Get todo it, because I got up to
one twenty eight is my movie andTV list. That's uh, that's but
that's not included, you know,So we'll talk about it. We'll talk
about it. I do have thetotal for mine too, because I separate
them out, so I had todo the math games, games games.
(25:10):
So the first thing I had beatat the start of the year was my
third, third, second, secondplay through of Cyberpunk twenty seventy seven,
so I could get the rest ofthe trophies for it. So like that
was the first thing I did.I'm pretty sure it was like super early
January, like maybe even like NewYear's Day, where I'm just like,
we're done, we're moving on.Well, now that the DLC has come
(25:32):
out, I am definitely I ownit, and I've been sitting on it
and it's verified on steam deck andI've heard good things playing on Steam.
Is on this list too, it'sjust further down. I'm just having such
a good time with Red Dam atthe moment that I'm it'll maybe Cyberpunk will
be next after that. Yeah, one big scope game like that exactly.
(25:52):
I don't know if I could immersemyself in multiple games at the same time,
and it hurts. It's kind oflike big reading two big fantasy books
same time. Your brain's just likefantasy. So after Cyberpunk, I had
gotten the Castlevania Advance Collection. Sothe second thing I had beaten was the
first game on that collection, whichis Castlevania Circle the Moon, Solid game.
(26:17):
That was when the franchise had prettymuch was in like post Symphony of
the Night High and they're just like, all the games are gonna be like
this now, it's gonna be allmetro Vanias forever, is it? Yeah,
And in that sense, like itstill works as being its own thing,
which the next one further down thislist definitely doesn't. Then after that,
I had the itch to replay Portalagain, both the Portal games,
and this was this was before theylike put the collection out on switch.
(26:41):
This was me just having and justbeing like, yeah, why not.
So I beat it twice because Ibeat it once, and then I went
through it again because there's the developercommentary playthrough of it where you go through
the game and then you like findthese little tapes to play commentary bits for
the developers are just like, here'sthe philosophy behind how we designed this level.
(27:03):
This we have actually had to changethis level because place testers like we're
super confused, like that kind ofstuff. Interesting. That is really cool.
Both games have them, because thatwas the next one was Portal two
twice, once just going through itand then again with the commentary when I
had like all the solutions fresh inmy mind. Because you do have to
like play the game again. YeahI haven't. I haven't played it since
(27:26):
I was a teenager. Yeah, but I now owned them because you told
me about the package the other dayand I was like cool, oh yeah,
they're always like super Chief on Steam. After that was It Takes Two.
I forget what the name of thedeveloper is, but he it with
I played it with my friend Alex. Nice. Nice. Yeah, nice
(27:47):
because you pay with somebody else.Yeah, that's the whole thing. Super
fun, like little co op experience. We were doing it in chunks or
like we would basically do like oneof the major stages with its own like
a day. You're just like,okay, we'll tackle that. We'll tackle
here, the next one tomorrow, the next one tomorrow, so we're able
to kind of make it last superfun game. It does make us want
to play that same developers last gameaway out okay cool, Yeah, because
(28:12):
I also i'd like that gimmick likethat seems to be like their thing.
They really like two player co opexperiences, which is nice. Yeah,
it is because you know, Ifeel like there is a lot of couples
that want a game together, andthat game seems so perfect. Oh,
that is a perfect game for couples. Really. Yeah. My om played
(28:34):
it with his wife and I waslike, okay, yeah, that seems
fun. So after that, Ihad the itch to play Ductails Remastered.
Nice because it because I was remindedthat like it's not physically it wasn't available
for a long time. I don'tthink it's even on the storefront anymore.
I just got lucky because I boughtit like years ago for my Steam and
(28:56):
now you just can't. Yeah,so I'm I'm like, let me get
this semester. Went through it.Really good game, definitely a lot of
good quality of like changes from theoriginal game, which is way more bullshit.
It has very much like any Sgame bullshit. After that, I
finally tackled Super Mario Galaxy on thethree D All Stars pack because I had
(29:18):
done sixty four and Sunshine and likefull completionis on it got all the stars
and stuff, so I kind ofput it off for a little before I
jumped in the Galaxy, and thenI did the Galaxy. It's kind of
like you did a lot of Mario. It's like okay, yeah, yeah,
especially sixty four sixty words drive meup a fucking wall. After that,
(29:40):
I did Tiers of the Kingdom. We had a whole episode talking about
tears in the Kingdom, so wedon't need to get super super into it.
After that, I finally made thePlunge and played Persona four Golden The
like, oh cool, the likefucking final mix, like extra content,
new new new final boss and endingand story editions and shit version of Persona
four. So I went through thatagain. That was fun. Okay.
(30:06):
Then I've played Gravity Circuit, whichis an indie game that's meant to be
a throwback to like Mega man X. Yeah it was. That was super
fun. It's on it's on thelist of my favorites further down, so
nice. Then after that was apuzzle game called Viewfinder. Yeah. They're
like the camera like yes, differentand you're solving it through like perspective and
(30:29):
such super creative. I tend toI tend to really love first person puzzle
games with super specific inventive uh likepremises, just like unless it's something like
that, because I'm thinking like, huh portal tallos principle, super liminal if
it's like they all kind of tickthose boxes, even even a super Hot
(30:51):
to an extent, Yes, ina lot of ways. Yeah, which
is what I played next. Yeah, I played Superhid. Yeah, I've
been Super High. It's hard. It's not easy to beat super I didn't
find I think the like the finalstages are hard, but leading up to
that, it's fairly straightforward. Likethe latter stages like once you get closer
to the end get pretty fucking annoying. I mean you not playing in VR
(31:15):
either, so that, yeah, definitely probably makes it a lot easier.
Playing Super Hot VR makes it,Like Okay, I probably just could because
I have a fucking oculus quest.I just never bothered. Nice. Nice.
That thing is just like the beatSaber machine. After Super Hot,
(31:36):
I finally jumped into Star Wars JediFallen Order, which I've had I owned
for like, I also have thaton my list for this year. It's
funny that we both have that onhere. Yeah, I had it,
I owned it for years and justI think what happened is that I bought
it and Final Fantasy seven remake atthe same time and I like focused specifically
on f F seven remake, andthen by the time I was done with
(32:00):
that, other stuff was coming out, so it just kind of got it
kind of got just overshadowed. Sothen I finally just jump back in,
mostly because Jedi Survivor look kind ofdope, so I'm like, let me,
yeah start this and like finish it. Finally. Yeah, I'm kind
of up. Some of the JediSurvivor is not so good on steam Deck
because I was like having are yousurprised playing Fallen Order on steam Deck,
(32:21):
and then it was just like okay, so now the PC well, it's
not just Steam Deck, it's likejust the PC port of Jedi Survivors a
little bit trashy. It's just notvery well put together. Again, it's
just like okay, yeah, you'relike I always I always get some like
shot in Freuda when like a gamegets a bad PC port, just like
oh oh consoles are dead, huhbecause there s But I did. I
(32:49):
did enjoy Jedi Jedi Fallen Order.I did have some issues with it.
I feel like some things grinded onsomething's very samey I Platinum Bit, so
I went full completionist on it.And christ that rough that. Yeah,
that got annoying. Mostly mostly they'lllike fill out. The most annoying thing
(33:10):
is filling out the map because itis actually fucking annoying to navigate through the
planets in this game. I getit, you want I get it.
You want to do like the DarkSouls thing, Yes, but and just
give me a fast travel the plant. So the thing is is platforming.
They're like shoving some very technical platformingin this game that should not be about
(33:35):
platforming. You know what I don'tgive a fuck about doing in Star Wars
making a nice jump over a gapin Star Wars, I want to I'm
a flet me make an adventure andJedi can jump around force jump is literally
a thing. You're just bad atplatforming. Shut your fucking mouth. Yeah,
(33:57):
of course I'm bat. That's whyI didn't like it out. Yeah,
the platforming was not an issue forme, Like mostly filling out the
map for like one hundred percent completionwas annoying. The combat is solid,
but I've played better as far aslightsaber combat is concerned, Like nothing's ever
really topped like those old Kyle Katargames. For me, it feels good,
but it's not like it doesn't makeyou be like whoa, you know,
(34:21):
like until later in the game, which is my problem with the game
in general. Is it not theplatforming because I can I can be like,
I know, I suck at this, like I know it's not my
thing. What I do not Ican't let go is that it didn't feel
good combat wise until sixteen hours inor something like that. It's something ridiculous
(34:43):
until like you were you felt likea Jedi, like you were really handing
out some ass, you know, like before that you were just like but
like the planets were diverse enough forlike the new stuff that they had added.
I liked the like world building stuffthat fall Over added, Like I
I figured out that going back toElam the snow planet where you know,
(35:05):
if you've seen Clone Wars the episodewhere like the young lings get their crystals,
that was cool to go there. And then it was especially cool realizing
that in canon that planet ends upbecoming star Killer Base. Yeah, right,
which I intuited because I'm like, huh, Snowbank, snow planet like
this with like this trench going allaround it that kind of looks like Star
(35:27):
Killer Base. I'm like, waita minute, star Killer base power by
kiber crystals. This is a planetspecifically for Harvard. This is a planet
specifically for kiber crystals. Holy shit, the fucking First Order turned this planet
where younglings find their Kiber crystals intoa fucking big death star. That's actually
kind of that's actually kind of tragicand perverse, and I like it.
(35:50):
Yeah, sometimes there's there's a littlethings where you're like, do I like
the First Order? No, no, I don't, but is part of
some of it kind of cool?Yeah, retroactively, but to be fair,
it's not like we haven't done thatbefore. Yeah, right, Star
Wars is like, we can fixthis. Give us just wait you they
(36:10):
give us the one fucking animated, great animated show that takes place in the
sequel trilogy, and then retroactively trilogiesgo to Forever that man that and we
already once we get to that likegenerational pivot. Just like kids who grew
up with the prequels are just like, no, I love the prequels growing
up. We're gonna get that too. Yeah, we're gonna get that where
(36:32):
they're like, I grew up withthe sequels, so I like them.
And it's already happening, and you'rekind of like, yeah, one of
them's good. That's so good foryou. One of them is one of
the best, but you know,it is what it is. Hey,
you can argue the same thing forthe prequels, just like Medicine, Attack
of the Attack of the Clones cankiss my ass. But you know,
(36:54):
Revenge of the Stiff is flawed, but it has cool ship in it.
But Falling Order though, I thinkthat it just kind of has it's very
slow game and once it gets going, it feels great and it's fun,
but once it takes a little bitto get there. I'm also getting a
little sick of the inspiration that likeSouls games have had on like other games,
(37:17):
I get fucking I'm sick of dodgerolling in combat, man, I'm
sick of it. I don't knowbecause I so one of the games that's
on my list here because I didn'tbeat it. So two games. I
have several games I played a lotof this year but could never beat.
So I uh, two games atthis point so I didn't beat and one
of them is Elden Ring. Iput eighty hours into Elden Rega. Just
(37:38):
you know that was never gonna haveWell, there's a difference between like that
type of game from the source andother games trying to emulate it. Yes,
I agree with you there because Iwas gonna say that, like the
the flawlessness and the smoothness of combatin elden ragis but like trying to apply
(37:58):
souls like mechanics to Fall in Order, which it is. That game is
very much has a lot of soulslike elements, and you're just like,
oh, it's so absolutely you wantto be a souls game star wards it
does. It really does feel likethat would Fall in Order two. You're
like, oh, you won't bea soul You're like, oh, because
it wasn't the combat that was hard. I was never losing in the combat,
you know, like I was like, you know, like it was
(38:21):
always just stupid. I was.I was playing on a higher difficulty,
so like the boss battles could bepretty tough. You have to be supercise
about it. No, I willsay the boss fights are something or something.
I'll give them that, but butnot in like a fair souls like
way. You know. It wasjust kind of like, you know,
like that's the number one thing thatI think that they get wrong. When
(38:43):
they're trying to emulate is like thatfeeling of fairness that they they're like,
hey, we want you to beatit, but we're there's a way to
beat it, but we're not justgonna give it to you. Yeah.
Like and that's a lot of whatlike you know that's from soft where is
doing? You know? So inthe two games I did you know,
did be Elder Ring and Army Corps, you know, both final boss things
(39:07):
where I'm just like, all right, then I can't do this. I'm
like, I'm good here. Confessionsof a Coward. Yeah, I'm sorry,
built the casual. So after afterFalling Order, I went whole hog
on the Mega Man X Legacy Collectionof Volume two, which is the lesser
(39:28):
games because the games peak at four, so they're just like, all right,
here we go. X five isa good game, and then X
six and seven are both trash, and then X eight is pretty good.
So they really so if you're goingto get one, just get the first,
like volume one with like the goodones. But went through that because
I finally wanted to just like digDeep and Platinum the second Legacy collection,
(39:51):
which was tough because I have nevereven beat Mega Man X six because it's
so fucking broken and bullshit makes sense. Yeah, So went through all of
those, so like X five, six, seven, and eight Rollerdrome and
platinumed it, which is the thatcool fucking rollerblading game with guns. Yeah,
(40:15):
because someone decided to like make aTony Hawk like game but give it
bullet time and shit, it's awild, really fun game. It gets
pretty tough though late in later stages. Oh cool, so interesting challenge.
Then after that was I had platinumedTHEA Rhythm Final bar Line, which is
(40:37):
the final Fantasy series rhythm game.Yep, oh wow, I mean cool.
That's very nice. Went through allof that tougher than you would think
because you give is I be somewhatof a strategy of it because you are
forming party members with their own advantagesand different advantages and spells as you're going
through the rhythm game, which iswhy I like it compared to other rhythm
(40:59):
games, because like, okay, there's still like an RPG element to it
here, even if it is kindof passage. I like that though.
I like that. That's cool. And then after that, I decided to
revisit Sonic Adventure one because I haveI have one in two on Steam.
So I just like played a moddedcopy of the first one just to like
(41:21):
just to have a run a littlesmooth, just because the PC copies of
both those it's not great. Ihave them there to the point that I
can't even fucking get Sonic Adventure twoto boot, like on my laptop.
I for some reason, I've beentrying a bunch of troubleshooting for it,
yeah, which apparently is not uncommon. I've heard people had issues with it
before. Yeah, but that's alsolike people had up on steam Deck.
(41:45):
But that's also uh, that's theimmediate like PC gaming, kiss my ass.
It's like, you know what streamingis really convenient. Buffer's wants fucking
physical media forever. Fuck it.Just like the moment a game has any
trouble up, like when I'm tryingto play a PC version of something fucking
disconsoles forever fucking shit. If Ihave to do any amount of troubleshooting for
(42:07):
it to actually just play, justirritation, just fucking function, then yeah,
it's out of line. Yeah, exactly. There's always some like ghosts
in the machine nonsense that you mighthave to like find troubleshooting for just so
well, you're after actually after goingthe system files and rename this and if
you do slash run and enter thisis a fucking code, you're like Jesus
Christ. So after that, Iplayed through The Messenger, which is a
(42:31):
really great fucking game. I'd alwaysheard great things about it. Yeah,
the Ninja guiding game. So thatis on my honorable mentions because it's not
a game from this past year, but I put it in. It's just
like one of the favorite things Iplayed this year. Yeah, great game.
It starts off as a Ninja guidin homage and then turns into something
(42:52):
different, like it is a gamethat has several twists and turns, and
it got me several different times. That's cool. Yeah, that's very cool.
It literally shifts genres as I sawtoo, what was shifting genres?
And I was like, whoa,Okay, so that's cool that they did
it. One Two, there isno Messenger too. What do you talk
(43:15):
about there's messenger to. There isnot a Messenger too. I'm gonna look
this up right now. Will youtalk about your next topic? Let's topic.
I'm still on gaming. If therewas a Messenger too, I would
have played it. I think thereis, but go ahead. I played
(43:36):
the game, Frank, pretty sure, Pretty sure me who hasn't played the
game with no more like that.Developer has made a new game that's in
the same universe, but it's nota sequel to The Messenger. So after
the Messenger, I did Spider Mantoo, the new Insomniac One, super
(43:59):
fun, just like the first Insomniacgame. These fucking games kind of give
me what the movies won't give methat I want in terms of steaks characterization.
I want Craven and I want Venom, but you want to keep fucking
with me with the stupid the stupidsolo movies. And then insomnia Ac.
She just like, yo, whatif both in the same game? Bro,
You're like, thank you, Zomniact. Maybe I was thinking of that
(44:24):
prequel Sea of Stars. Maybe Iwas thinking, yeah, see if Stars
is an RPG, different thing, same universe, though, I see,
yeah, I see what you're saying. After Spider Man two, I went
through all of and Platinum Sonic Frontiers. Oh wow, yeah, I played
that this year. I did notbeat it. Uh, And then you've
(44:45):
told me that the end is kindof hard, So I'm kind of like
whatever. Yeah, the true endinghas this stupid fucking like bullet heuth section
out of nowhere. It's dumb.I also didn't finish the DLC because frankly
I didn't give a ship, especiallyafter just having played Sonic Adventure one,
where like the characters who aren't Soniccontrol so well, and they control like
(45:08):
fucking garbage in Frontiers, I hatethe way their physics work. I'm like,
nah, not good enough. There'sthere's lots of things to like in
Frontiers. It is fun. Thebutt flawed, Yes, I think that,
Yes, exactly. I think there'sthings too, like I think there's
I think basically the concept of Breaththe Wild with Sonic works like it does
(45:35):
work like just the open world andto be real, Sonics does a lot
of things better than a lot ofopen world games in the way of just
keeping you active in the environment. But I there's a lot of flaws.
There's a lot of like why amI doing this bit of the map again?
You know, like there's this shiplike that where you're just like,
(45:58):
where is this one object? Ican't find it? Oh, it's way
over you know, like it's dumbthings like that where you're like, did
anybody fucking play test this game becausepay currency to watch not like real world
country, but I have to collectstuff to collect, to play cut scenes,
to talk to the companions, toprogress, just like a lot of
(46:20):
it can be very confused. Yeah, you're just like, ah, it's
like one of those things where you'relike, it's one step forward for the
second team, which any step forwardI'll take, But this is a this
is kind of a two steps backsituation. It's not It's no Sonic Mania
with you know where it's just ahit and it's not. The other games
(46:42):
they put out recently have not beenhits either, so you know the last
hit. Yeah, the last greatlike three D game they put out was
Generations, and Generations was two consolegenerations ago, which I played a little
bit of this year. It's agood time. So after that, I
did a revisit of the Taalos principlebecause the second game was coming out,
(47:07):
So I'm like, let me digdeep and actually Platinum the first game because
I had meant to and just neverdid so, I which were quite the
reason I didn't, just because itrequired me to like play the game like
one and a half more times tojust go through it again because there was
like missible trophies that I had tolike start the whole game over for use.
I'm like, god, damn, that's rough. Shit, I hate
(47:30):
that stuff. Please, I didit. It's always a good incentive when
like, oh, sequel's coming out, Shit, I platinum the first Should
I platinum the first one? MaybeI should platinum the first one? After
that, I played Infamous First Light, which was like an expand alone to
Infamous Second Son, which I justnever got for whatever, Evenson, despite
(47:52):
loving the Infamous games and literally gettingthe platinum for all of them. Yeah,
I just never bothered with First Light, despite really liking Second Son.
So I finally got it because it'ssuper cheap like the Infamous. The Infamous
like franchise is basically shelved at thispoint, especially with a Sucker Punch moving
on to Gostusushima, so I'm like, yeah, fuck it, it's only
(48:12):
it's only a few bucks. I'msure. I'm all the games become easier
and easier to like go completion ason, so I'm sure, and expand
alone will be even easier. Andit was. I basically like beat it
in a day and then like thenext day I was I got the platinum
for it, but I did havefun with it. Then after Infamous First
Light, Tallas Principal two came out, went whole hog on that beat it
(48:36):
did not platinum it because I needto go through the whole game again because
now this one has several different endingsand you have to make certain choices based
on where you are in the gamein order to affect the world to get
at So you're like, all right, I'll come back to you later,
but I did beat it. I'msuper fun. Love those games. I
(49:00):
sent you that clip of like theguy going off about John Carpenter. Yeah.
And then after that, I wasitching for a revisit of metal Gear,
so I played metal Gear Solid oneand metal Gear Solid two. Went
through those fairly quickly, played Aliens, Fire Team Elite, a couple other
(49:21):
buddies. Solid game like nothing, nothing spectacular, but like but a solid
time. Not even an FBS.It's a third person right, yes,
sorry I'm thinking of older Yeah, third person simple third person shooter. Good
time with like two other buddies.I had fun, nice cool duh.
(49:43):
And then the last two things Iplayed before the year was out was a
Lethal Company, which i've played afew times. Now, can you beat
the Lethal Company? I don't thinkI don't think you can. I don't
think there's like an ending ending. It's just like surviving as long as you
can. Okay, sorry, okay, cool. I didn't know if you
were if you were counting it asbeat, and I was like, yeah,
(50:05):
when it's a game that like isendless, I just kind of count
like I played a session of it. I played out of it. Yeah,
like I played a game of amongUs. I've played among us.
Okay, makes sense. Yeah. And then the last one was Powerwash Simulator
just for the walls, which isyeah, it's it's a chill game.
(50:28):
I'm not normally into like comfort gameslike that because I just I get bored.
Yeah, but doing it with buddies, especially because they have the weirdest
like they get the weirdest licenses.Somehow, I think it's just it's such
a simple, like cheap idea thatthey're able to just get the wildest licenses,
like, oh we got Final Fantasyseven. Well, you want to
clean a model of Midguard. Youwant to clean the bike that Cloud rides,
(50:52):
Oh we got Back to the Future. You want to clean the clock
tower? You want to clean theorient that we got to Rader, you
want to clean the Croft mansion.Like, sure, that's ridiculous. That's
at least a little more incentive. That's so funny. But that is it
for my games. That's thirty onegames I played hotly I beat. Yeah,
(51:16):
a lot shorter list for games I'vebeaten in twenty twenty three. First
one was Building full of Cats, which is a fine of cats hitting in
the image game. I will say, this is my kind of guilty pleasure
game. I know it's the stupid, I know it's stupid. I know
it's stupid, but it's kind ofmy like brain shut off, like dirt
(51:37):
dirpe I find the kitties type ofthing, and it just kind of it's
great. It had a ton oflevels, and there's other versions of it
that are just as fun. LikeBuilding full of Cats is good. But
uh I played the fuck out ofI'm playing the funk out of an Arcade
full of Cats, which is thesequel. So if you look for just
(51:59):
a point in click game with thecats, that's the Building full of Cats
a good time. Uh. ThenI played Star Wars Fall in order.
We talked about it. Uh ThenI played Michael Jackson's Moonwalker because I got
a a mew. I got this, we got this little bad boy right
here, which is great. Ilove my little mew Mini too, really
(52:24):
fun little system. Just you know, it's great to have a crap ton
of games that work right away outof the box you can get. Yeah,
and it's uh. I did.I did play a little bit of
it when we when I was overat your place, just a bit to
like tested out some of the emulation, and it's it's solid. It has
like the typical thing with emulation sometimeswith the sound where you get just like
(52:46):
really bad like sound pops certain games. But yeah, but overall mostly rarely
solid, but I get I didplay it was one of the games I
beat on there. It was likeMichael Jackson's Moonwalk because it's like, you
know, you could play ArKade gameson there, but you could keep pumping
in coin. So it's one ofthose things where it's like, Okay,
(53:07):
I you know, gain arcade gamescould be a lot easier, and uh,
moon Walker's absolutely Uh. It shouldhave been the biggest fucking red flag
of all fucking time. Is basicallya way I'll put it is uh basically
it's Michael Jackson's saving kids and theyall screamed thanks Michael when he saves them,
(53:27):
and they hung them and then theyleave. Uh should have been the
fucking biggest red flag of all timethat the whole game was based around saving
kids, you know, like, well, like it just should have.
It should have. They were multiplewell, to be fair, there were
like multiple red flags in like RKelly's entire desography that we chose to ignore.
So yeah, exactly, even whenit's staring you right in the face,
(53:49):
we just don't do anything about it. Earlier this year, Sega Bass
Fishing. Sega was putting out uhSega bass Fishing on Steam and they gave
it out for free. So theygave it out for like usually it's seven
dollars, which I would pay,but it was they were when they put
(54:10):
it out for free. No,it was like literally, you just signed
you're like start up for the Segaemail list. Of those we'll give you
Sega bass Fish. That's how Igot the soap shoes in Sonic Frontiers is
essay Sonic Adventure two shoes. That'ssuper funny. But the the Sega bass
(54:31):
Wish is a good time I beatthis. I beat the story on it,
and it was I you know, this year I really got into fishing.
In August, I got into fishingand it's been really nice. It's
really it's I it's a weird hobbyfor me to get into, but it's
one of those things I was intoit as a kid and now I'm like
back into it and it's it's beenreally great for me to like get out
(54:52):
and like do things be out inthe world. Like it's a good it's
a therapeutic thing. I really betweenit, between the fishing and the mustache
and you've always worn glasses, you'refucking going full ned Flanders, I know,
right, it's just like oops, like seventy dad, seventy only just
(55:12):
need a kid, you know,Like but uh uh the I really the
second Bass Fishing was a good time. I did play a lot of bass
Master twenty twenty two. This year. I played a lot of games actually
to find a good fishing game.Yeah, I played a lot of I
played Fishing Planet, I played allthese other games. I love those Second
Bass Fishing hold up because I usedto love that as a kid, and
(55:34):
the only reason I haven't revisited itis one the fear of it not holding
up. And two I was spoiledbecause I had it on the Dreamcast and
I had the fucking fishing rod controller, and I'm like, I don't want
to play it with it without thefishing rock controller. But there's equivalent.
Yeah, you'll probably be a letdown in that aspect. I sincerely I
will say, maybe someone's made one. It's just like we made an eight
(55:58):
big do is made a fishing cantrollers specifically so you can play Sega Bass
fishing. I bet they have, dude, they do the weirdest ship.
But I will say that, like, there's I've played a lot of fishing
games this year to try to belike, Okay, well it's cold.
I love you play some games youknow of fishing instead of instead of being
able to fish because it's icy inNew Hampshire now. Lots of games sucking
(56:22):
up, lots of games just getit wrong. They just it doesn't feel
right, It doesn't add any satisfactionto it, It doesn't do it.
It doesn't feel like fishing, itdoesn't play like fishing. I play,
you know, like and and it'ssimple. It could be as simple as
how Stardouo Valley does fishing, orhow you know opp Cat or how Legend
(56:46):
of Zelda does fishing. Those aresimple ways to capture fishing and do it
well. But there's a lot ofgames that are fishing games that fuck it
up. Uh Sega. Bass Fishingis not one. They do a great
job. It feels great, itfeels like fishing. It's a good time.
Yeah. But the other one Iwill say that I played a lot
(57:06):
of this year that I didn't beatbecause it's it's very fucking hard to beat.
The game is Bass Master twenty twentytwo, and that is the you
know, they're kind of it cameout in twenty twenty one, and you
know as they updated it till twentyto the end of twenty twenty two and
they haven't updated it since. ButI will say it's probably the best fishing
(57:28):
game like because it's got like allthe brands and all that shit and like
and like all the actual equipment, and it like feels right and it has
and it like actually has some excitementwhen you catch a fish like it it
works, and so does Red DeadRedemption two when you actually turn off the
(57:49):
having to move the controller to reelin. I was like, that's the
dumbest shit I've ever heard. SoI went into the accessibility settings and they
have a pross X to reel in, and I was like, specifically a
PC thing because there definitely wasn't thatequivalent like on the touch pad on the
PS four. From what I remember, it might be a new added thing
(58:12):
because it was an accessibility option. But then again, I like barely ever
fished, so I don't really rememberI was. But then again, that
was late enough in the PS fourlife cycle that they definitely would have been
emphasizing the touch pad all that much. Yeah, so I really hated using
the like you know, reeling inwith the with with the joystick. So
I was like, Okay, there'sgot to be a better way, and
using the X feels a little bitbetter. I'm like, okay, that
(58:35):
feels right. It's like it's funny, you know, Like, but the
other ones on the list, Legendzeldatwo is the Kingdom, probably my highest
rated on this list this year andprobably would be my game of the year
of the games I played this yearand beat this year and then uh but
you know, also other Ring wasa fucking great dance so you know,
(58:58):
like I can't really, but thenI did beat mobile suit Gundam. You
see Engage, which is a mobilegame. I constantly I'm still playing the
game. I just it's I beatthe story, I beat all the things
that are available, and then everytime they launch new content, which they
did this week, I beat itagain. So it's one of those things
where I don't know if to qualifyit as beaten even though I there's no
(59:22):
more content for me to beat.So it's one of those things where it's
like, yeah, I beat thegame, you know, like I you
know, like and I mean likethe top ten percent or five percent of
game like players in the game.So it's not like, you know,
like I still really validate it.So yeah, validation. It's a it's
a good gotcha game. Though Iwill give credit to this is that I've
(59:45):
played a lot of gotcha games andthis feels better. I'm also not like,
you know a lot of gotcha games. You're like, You're like,
did I just spend money on atwo picture of a two D woman?
You know? Like, but hereyou're like, did I spend money on
a two D model of a Gundam? Maybe? No, No, I
(01:00:06):
didn't spend any money. I don'tspend any money on the game, but
you know, whatever that's you're playing, you're paying for P and g's come
on, Yes, exactly, soI do, but but you do feel
a little bit better when it's agoddam You're like, okay, a little
bit better, but you're not.I'm not spending money on it. But
it was a solid game. Iwas like, gave it like an eight
out of ten. I was like, it's it's sound. But one of
(01:00:29):
those open world games I had areally good time with this year that you
know definitely didn't come out this yearwas Just Caused three. I've never played
it before. I've never played anyof the Just Causes before, but I
heard, uh, you get toblow up some fascists in this game,
and I went cool, I alwayslove a game where you get to kill
some fascists. Uh, and uhit was what a great what a great
(01:00:53):
time. I don't know, haveyou ever played Just Cause three? To
Sean like a little bit, alittle bit of the second game, and
it was, Yeah, it wasfun for what it was, just I
couldn't stick with it. I thinkyou'd like three a lot more. I
played through the I played the hellout of it. I collected all the
collectibles in the game. I didnot one hundred percent get all the achievements
(01:01:15):
because it was it was like youhad to get certain times in certain races,
and I was like, that's notfucking happening. Uh So I was
like, Okay, I collected allthe things. I beat the story goodbye.
But uh I really did enjoy thegame because of its pick up and
play nature. It was kind oflike anytime you picked it up, you
could destroy a base, you couldfly around, you could do something,
(01:01:37):
and it would advance the story orthe collectibles like this much more. And
it was just it does it insuch a satisfying way that even like now
in a year where I play,I'm playing you know, Red Dead,
Redemption, Tears of the Kingdom justcause three was probably the most satisfying open
(01:01:59):
world experience where it was just kindof like anything I do does something,
and anything I you know, likeI just pop in, do something,
I'm out. You know, Ihad a good time and advances the game,
you know, like where none ofthe none of the other big you
know, even Tiers the Kingdom can'treally you can't say that you have to
do things in Tiers the Kingdom. You can't. You can't really, I
(01:02:21):
mean you could pop in, couldpop in and out. We talked about
that, but like it's not aspop in it just cause three was.
But and then finally my last gameof the year, which actually is probably
if Tiers of the Kingdom is mynumber one game I beat this year,
this is number two. And ifthere wasn't Tiers of the Kingdom, this
(01:02:44):
would be number one. As VampireSurvivors, if you haven't tried what basically
Vampire Survivors created a genre called bulletHeaven. Basically, I mean it's probably
was a thing before then, butit's kind of instead of bullet hell,
you're you know, you're you're tryingto avoid bullets. In a bullet heaven,
(01:03:06):
you are the thing sending out allthe bullets. So you and Vampire
Survivor does a great job of likeit's it's just one of those perfect roguelikes
where you're like, one more run, one more run, I could unlocked
something else when we're run, youknow, like I do this one other
weird thing and unlock something else, and it just constantly drags you in to
keep playing, uh, and they'veconstantly released a great DLC for this,
(01:03:30):
just more levels, more fun. They even had to collab recently with among
Us, which I thought was reallyridiculous and fun. But uh, I
did beat the story recently. Ibeat like all the levels at the end.
I beat it right on Christmas break. It was the last game I
beat before the end of the year. I gotta say, it's great.
It's it's a great game. It'sone it's one of the uh. If
(01:03:52):
you look, if I look atmy my like playlists on Steam, uh,
my top five games for this yearare Elden Ring, eighty Hours Just
Caused, three Monster Hunter Worlds, which I'll talk about in a second,
Red Dead Redemption, and then VampireSurvivors. So those are my top five
games on Steam. And that wasmy top five for this year because that's
(01:04:15):
kind of what I'm doing on Steamdeck now. I didn't beat Monster in
the World, but I did putin like forty hours into it. I
didn't I didn't beat the game becausethere was a couple of hard fights and
no one was playing it at thetime. But now everyone's back to playing
it, so I might as wellgo fucking back. I guess, but
I actually had a really good time. I was such a fucking yeah,
(01:04:38):
I know. I was such ahater on Monster in the World. Years
of hating on Monster in the Worldbecause I was like, I was like,
oh, it's just console players MonsterHunter, and yes, am I
right? Yeah? Does that meanit's not Monster Hunter? No? So
I should have realized that is thateven if it is dumb down Monster Hunter
(01:05:00):
or the normal console player, itis still Monster on her and still has
a great time. And yes,it doesn't have a big roster like most
Monster Hunter games should have uh anddo have. Uh. But you know,
I'm excited for the sequel coming outthis year. That'd be a great
time in twenty twenty four. Doesn'tworld have a shitload of DLC? Yes,
(01:05:25):
I didn't see that was the thing, as I couldn't beat the game
and they don't give you the DLCto so it's like kind of one of
those things so you have to keepprogressing to get to the DLC. I
didn't, so I didn't get toIce Born. Yeah, I still got
a lot more to do. Uh. So it's like I'm glad you've settled
down on it, because I feellike a good chunk of it was also
(01:05:45):
you were just salty that you gota Monster Hunter game that you didn't get
to play because you don't have abig Boy console. Yeah, well now
I do, Now I do.I got steamed actually show him out.
But like there's a difference between LikeI can tell some of it was just
salt. There was a monster aroundthe game and you didn't get to play,
so you're mad about it a littlebit. A little bit so other
(01:06:10):
things that I played this year becauseI had a Steam deck that I put
some serious time into but didn't beat. I tried Gotham Knights. That ain't
it, homie. Uh, that'sall I'll say. That's I will stop.
We'll stop there, because I couldgo on all fucking we could do
a whole fucking episode about what Ithink about Gotham Knights, but I'll just
say that, ain't it, Homie. I did put in a significant amount
(01:06:34):
of time into Final Fancy uh typezero uh hd uh, A good time,
a lot too many systems, toomany systems, but I like them.
That's what I've heard. I've hada lot of people who like know
my fucking cynicism towards modern final Fantasyso you probably like type zero. I'm
(01:06:55):
like, I don't know, allright, Uh, But then I I
did put a significant amount of timeto call the Lamb, which just dropped
new DLC this week, actually sendsthe Flesh. So I'm excited to get
actually back into that game because Idid enjoy it. I just I was
one or two boss fights away fromthe end, so I just still need
(01:07:16):
to get back to that. Theother thing that I put a lot of
time into that I did put downafter a while. It's just one of
those things that I quit cold turkeyon was Marvel Snap. And this will
be the last thing I talked aboutgame wise. Marvel Snap very cool made.
Basically they took the guy who designedHeartstone, Brendan Bowed I think his
(01:07:42):
name is, and they were like, hey, we'll give you Marvel money
if you design us a Marvel Heartstonebasically, and that's what this is is
kind of a but Heartstone still takesa lot of time. It takes you
maybe, like you know, tenminutes to beat somebody. So like you
got you got you got Magic, which takes forty five minutes, you got
(01:08:04):
Heartstone, which takes about five toten. But here Snap was like two
minutes, two minutes, two minutes, two minutes, So I will give
credit there. That's the fun ofthe game. But like any other TCG,
uh, you need to be spendinga lot of money to be the
top of the game, you know, like that's if you want to be
(01:08:25):
playing the best of the best. You want to be playing like, you
know, a competitive game. Yougot to be spending a lot of money.
And I was not willing to onon Marvel snaps you should. I
feel like that's just the way withany TCGs, you gotta it's it's I
love playing TCGs. I love playingthem, but they they eventually you get
to realize that, like all thisexpansion needs to get you to spend the
(01:08:49):
money. So that's how they getyou every time. Yeah, I have
I have one friend who like playsit a lot, and it's it annoys
me. Snap. Yeah, it'sgood. It's a good game. I'm
not like, I'm not knocking, which says a lot for me, because
like anytime you put mobile on that, I'm like, fuck it, I
don't care. But but I understand. But it is a solid one.
(01:09:15):
I will see that. It's justlike it's like screen caps of like the
different like characters and stuff like that, and like asking about it. I'm
like, dude, I don't Idon't give a ship. Don't talk to
me about this. Well, youknow, people like That's the thing is
when you it's funny people do askbecause they're doing like deep dives on Marvel
stuff. So people ask you andthey'll be like, what is this And
(01:09:38):
you're like, all right, letme let me tell you. Do you
know how magic is? I'm like, yeah, I do X men.
You're like, of course, Ifucking know magic. Who the fuck do
you think you're talking? So,I mean, to be fair, we
are more DC heads. There areplenty of holes in our Marvel knowledge.
That's not posture, very true, very true. But I feel like both
(01:09:59):
of us have have pretty much psyclopedicknowledge of Spider Man and uh and then
by extension, the rest of thefucking Marvel universe because Spider Man interacts with
you know, psychopedic until a certainpoint. Then we just kind of yeah,
never ends, never ends, andthen you're just like damn, okay,
(01:10:23):
but besides, but that's my endof my games. Okay, So
this is further down on the list, but I will I will just rattle
it off quickly because I think it'llbe better that way. Let me go
through the books, Okay, that'ssince I know it's going to be a
small list for you. I don'tYeah, I don't got any books question
Mark I read this year. Imean no, I've read a lot of
(01:10:46):
Gundam Thunderbolt. You can see behindme. I also read the Menu created
Gundam. Uh, great time, great time, both all great books.
Thumbs up, two thumbs up.That's that's my book reading. Okay,
all of chainsaw Man and I read. Well, no, I'm not done
reading that this year, so Ican't count that, but I've read a
(01:11:09):
lot of I mean online, Iput like volumes okay, and then and
then Unchained Soldier is my guilty pleasureadmittance here that I read. Uh,
guys, if you know what thatis, or you're watching anime this season,
now you know what it is,which is kind of for me.
It's like yeah, for me,it's like shit, fuck, people know
(01:11:30):
it exists now, God damn it. Because it was it was definitely a
guilty pleasure for me, where I'mlike, I know this is bad,
but I like it. Like I'mjust like I'm just like, I don't
give a shit. I like thistrash and like now it's trash out in
the public, and I'm like, god damn it. My buddy Rob would
read something like that unblinkingly and justtalk about it. He has no shame
(01:11:54):
in his game when it comes toshow. Yeah, no, I I
respect that. I I like Ihad been and like, but this is
yeah for me, I was like, this is horny, So like,
is it the old Catholic And you'dbe like, oh no, just that,
(01:12:15):
just that like upbringing coming up likea burp, like some acid reflux.
A little bit, maybe a littlebit. Sometimes that sticks with you
a little bit sometimes. Yeah.So books, So I read the entirety
of Bakuman, not to be confusedwith Bakuvan. Bakuman is a manga by
(01:12:40):
the deaf No creators about getting intothe manga industry. So it literally starts
with these two kids who have adream of becoming manngakas in like middle school,
starting there, submitting the contests liketrying to get awards and stuff,
and eventually working their way to actuallyworking undershown and jump and just like the
trials and tribulations that entails very likedetailed how the sausage gets made. Stuff
(01:13:06):
about how manga publication works and howmuch different it is to the way we
do Western comics is really fascinating becauseit's published because unlike comics where you get
single issue releases and they just kindof stand on their own, the way
shown in Jump Works is that it'sa magazine. You buy the magazine and
you get several of the different storiesthat you read, so your story lives
(01:13:30):
and dies on like surveys and likereadership numbers and stuff like that. So
if you don't make the cut inlike those like lists and surveys and stuff
like that, you're gone. Yeah, And it goes through the whole gamut
of like they start a one shot, it turns it to its own series.
They finally end the series on theirown terms. They get a series,
the series ends up being canceled, they get they have to like drum
(01:13:53):
up support for a new one, even stuff like they get screwed over because
the one of the partners get sick, and just like going into like how
much of a grind it is tobe in the manga industry, Yeah,
because they're pushing shit like that outon a weekly basis. It's not like
the monthly standard of Western comics. And it's also often a case of like
(01:14:15):
writer and artists tend most of thetime tend to be the same person.
Yeah, so it's not that you'relike, well, I could just write
the script and leave it to theartist to like draw it. So exactly,
really great series. I'm glad Iread it in manga form, but
there is an anime and it didcover all of it. The only place
it's on I think is Hulu,of all places to watch it legally,
(01:14:36):
but it is there, but thereis no dub. They never made a
dub for it, yah, whichI mean which I know translates, so
you'll probably never watch it. No, I will watch it. I watch
some I do so great time, especially if you're interested in like the creative
world and you want to know howlike the sausages gets made, and it's
(01:14:58):
like it's very it's very inspired.Nice. I like it when Magacas have
their like big, super fantastical passionproject and then they move on to something
way more like low key, becauseour Kawa did the same thing for that
after Full Metal Alchemist, like nowSilver Spoon, which is just about farming
because I grew up on a farmand they're just like, you know,
(01:15:20):
the shit still kind of slaps though. After that, I read the third
volume of Something Is Killing the Children. I read a couple others. There's
still I'm sure there's still volumes Ihaven't read. Plus there's a spin off
and the like, so that seemsto be doing well for them over there.
(01:15:40):
That's cool. I read as per. I only read this because I
had already heard good things, Andthen after the DCU announcement that James Gunn
put out about adapting it, Iread Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow by Tom Yeah,
and it really fucking good. Andthis is coming from someone who's like
not a big Supergirl person like I'mwhen it comes to Superman, I'm just
like the more fucking Kryptonians you add. It's kind of like it's kind of
(01:16:03):
like the Sayans and DBZ the lastof the Sayans, just like, well,
sure, because bunch of fucking poppingup. It's the same thing with
like Order sixty six, with withlike Star Wars, how many Jedi made
it through? Did you kill anyof these fuckers? Jesus Christ? But
after I am gone, the lastJedi you will be You're like, you
(01:16:25):
sure, we got like ten ofthese motherfuckers running around. There's a lot
of them. I mean to befair, I I uh, let's not
get on a tangent for Star Wars. Okay, go ahead, go ahead.
Yeah. After that, I readBatman, White Knight Presents Harley Quinn,
which is like the Little Harley Quinnone shot that they did. Really
good. If you like the WhiteKnight universe, It's been consistently really impressive.
(01:16:49):
I'm currently reading The Beyond one nowand so far it's super good.
Sean Murphy and Clay McCormick. Yeahyeah. Then after that I read Green
Lantern Earth one, like volume one, volume two. We had talked about
this on an episode I think, yeah, we did a whole episode about
(01:17:09):
it. We did a whole episodefor Green Lantern. Yeah. Yeah,
that was super fun. And thena lot of this year was filled with
Brandon Sanderson. I read a lotof Sanderson this year. But the first
thing was a Tress of the EmeraldSea, which is his, which was
the first of like the four bigKickstarter books. Okay, yeah, super
(01:17:30):
fun and charming. It has avery like Terry Pratchett like William gold like
vibe to it. So it haslike a like Princess Bride vibes in terms
of the way it presents its fantasyand like its sense of humor and just
how charming it is very well done. After that, I read Unmasked,
(01:17:51):
which is a an autobiography by KaneHodter, So it's about his history and
like horror movies and stuff and beinga stunt man and also like the the
uh fire stunt that actually gave himlike extensive scarring all over his body,
which is like a thing with him. Yeah, and like conquering that and
like all the stuff he had wentthrough because of shitty hospital practices. So
(01:18:15):
good read. It later turned intoa documentary, so you could either read
the book or just watch the docbut obviously the book goes into more detail
about stuff. Very cool. Thenafter that, I don't know why,
but like it was a book Ialways really liked as a kid, and
I was just like, it's cheapon audible, I'll just grab it.
Why not? I read or listenedto Dear Mister Henshaw by Beverly Cleary,
(01:18:36):
Oh, which I didn't I'd like, I don't know. I was just
thinking about it. It just kindof popped in my hands, like I
remember really liking that book. Okay, you know, I don't know if
I ever read that. Like. Then after that, I also read its
sequel, which I didn't know therewas a thing it was cut Strider,
So I read that too. Thatwas also solid. Then let's see,
(01:18:58):
After that, I did read thesolo Rorshack book that DC Black Label put
out, which Tom King. Yeah. Interesting, It's it takes place in
like the same continuity as the HBOshow, Like the events of the HBO
show are like brought up. Interesting. Yeah, so it's like in that
(01:19:19):
continuity less that instead of like doomsdayclock stuff. Yeah. So interesting book.
I didn't I don't necessarily think itneeded to be a Rorshack book specifically,
but what's done with it is stillinteresting. Yeah book, Yeah,
obviously in people mm hmm. ThenI read the first volume of Doom PATROLA
(01:19:43):
for Grant Morrison's Run because I've beenmeaning for the longest time to gear up
to actually watch the show. Yeah, just like, let me fucking read
Morrison's Run first before I do anythingelse. So I'm like slowly chipping away
at that. Yeah, you're likeI hear that's the best DC show,
and you're like, eventually, oh, you're there. Then I reread through
all the original run of The Sammanbecause we did it for book club.
(01:20:06):
Nice. Then I finally started theStormlight Archive, which is like Brandon Sanderson's
big epic fantasy epic is like hisplanned ten book series, which is four
books in soon to be five nextyear. Fack, and they are bricks.
But god damn have they been good. I was intimidated because one the
(01:20:32):
reason I went into it is becauseone I started reading Sanderson through the Misborn
books, and apparently I need tocatch up on storm Light for the latest
miss Born book because now the booksare starting to get like very connected within
like his spanning universe. I'm like, shit, now I got to do
homework, which is included reading allthe Stormlight Archives. So I'm three books
(01:20:53):
into it, and they've been fantastic. You can see the influence from like
other series that have preceded it,like like The Wheel of Time. But
I'm also still interested. I've onlyI only read The Eye of the World,
which I liked, but it wouldhave been just as good if it
was half as long. And Iwill die on that hill alright, No,
(01:21:16):
there's still more. I'm trying tolike I'm scrolling through because I separated
it into volumes. I'm like tryingto skip shit. I've already talked about
Yep, all the sand Man,read through, all of the Promise Neverland,
Good Time. I had gotten intoit because the first season of the
anime was great and then the fuckingsecond season of the anime was hot garbage.
(01:21:38):
So I read the manga instead, and yeah, the manga is much
better. Nice, nice, yepmore Sando. We did Dark Knight,
which we talked about for Mask ofthe Phantasm. I read the first novella
of the murder Bot Diaries, whichis called All Systems Read. That was
solid, very funny. And Iread the second Jurassic Park. But the
(01:21:59):
Lost World much different experience. Whilethe first Jurassic Park movie is already a
loose ish adaptation of the book,it still kind of keeps the core what
the what that plot is, Theystill get stuck. The Lost World book
and the Lost World movie are verydifferent beasts. They're like completely yes.
(01:22:21):
Yeah, It's like they took someleaps and bounds away from the for the
movie, which is weird because thereason why he wrote a sequel in the
first place was because Spielber was justlike, can you write a book so
I can make another movie? Okay, here's another book. Okay, Now
what if we use almost none ofit? What if we say, fun
that's a terrible movie, Like thiswas your idea. I didn't even want
(01:22:43):
to write a sequel to begin with. That's super funny. So those are
books. That's the books. Good, okay, And we covered what you
read. So now we're getting intothe big boys, which is movies.
Yes, so I yeah, let'ssay let's see let's say, let's kick
(01:23:04):
him off. Yeah, I canrattle them off. I mean, let
me, let me start, andthen you can you can go into yours.
I think that that that that's Ithink that's probably because you just did
all that writing stuff, So mightas well. Let's let's change it up
and I'll try to go I'll tryto go decently fast here. But of
course, you know, we're tryingto give some time to these things.
(01:23:26):
So movies and TV. I Idid not do seasons of shows at first,
and then I started to, soyou'll see some things out of order
at the end. Yeah, becausewhat if you're starting a new show.
Yeah, exactly, so I needto so to twenty twenty four, I'm
gonna have more like I watched thisseason. I watched that season for for
(01:23:46):
things. So first off, Iwatched Black Bear with Audrey Plaza. Really
solid movie. Uh six out often. Not not gonna blow your socks
off, but it was. Itwas cool and kind of stuck with you,
you know, like you're kind oflike thinking about it afterward. Dairy
Girls season three, great end ofthe show. If you love Dairy Girls,
(01:24:11):
this is a great way to endthe show. Totally worth watching.
Eight out of ten. This PlaceRules. This is the Channel five documentary.
I gave it a nine out often at the time, and I
still believe it's a great, greatdocumentary. It just came out that Andrew's
a little problematic, but only he'sjust weird. He's weird to some women.
(01:24:32):
So I didn't like that. Butbesides the point for the discount stuff
for problematic behavior, you probably wouldn'tbe watching much. Yeah, see exactly,
which is not great. But Gunbusterthe movie because I was trying to
watch I'm trying to watch, youknow, as much uno stuff as I
can. Eight out of ten funtime. You know, it's just kind
(01:24:55):
of ridiculous. It's just like younghigh school go Battle Universe, threatening threat
and you're like, okay, youknow, and giant Robot and you're like,
all right, cool and totally worthwatching. Especially if you're an Neon
Genesis fan, you'll be like, all right, that's cool shit, you
gotta go faster. Yes, BleachersInto the Shadow, which is their their
(01:25:18):
whole like documentary slash concert film, which was very nice. Mobile Suit Gundam
The Witch for Mercury finished up,So I watched all of that in sub
by the way, I haven't evenwatched the dub of it, Sean,
so there you go. Was thatyour only option? Yes it was at
(01:25:44):
the time, but there you go, But now it isn't. And I
still haven't watched the dub, whichI need to actually do because I really
did enjoy the show. Totally worthwatching. Yes, the second season is
rushed. It feels like it's oneof those things where you felt like you
had all the time in the worldand they were starting this huge, expansive
universe with season one and then seasontwo they were like shows over pitched over
(01:26:09):
and like and I like the wayit ended, and it had a very
cool ending. But it's definitely oneof those that you're just like that was
a little old. That was alot you know, you shoved into season
two there, fuck but How's MovingCastle? I had never seen it before?
Great Time eight out of ten.A YouTube documentary called Disney Channel's theme
(01:26:29):
a History's Mystery by is It What'sthe Theme Park Channel? And Blank defunkd
Land. He was He's always makesreally long episodes with defunk Land, but
he kind of made a full ondocumentary Disney diving into who actually wrote the
Disney Channel theme? And it's actuallya fantastic watch, totally worth it.
(01:26:55):
I watched Andrew Santano's Cheeseburger, actuallymy highest rated stand up for the year.
I I thought this was very funny. I did watch Cheesburger. I
liked it a lot. I likedit a lot. Gone in the Night
I don't remember that much. Itwas a five out of ten, so
I don't remember that much. Butit was a horror movie. I think
(01:27:16):
Top Gun because i'd never seen TopGun before. I enjoyed it. It's
very gay, but it's I didenjoy Top Gun a lot more than I
expected. I always kind of stayedaway from it because I've you know,
I'm I grew up my dad inthe Navy and his dad and Navy.
(01:27:36):
So it's one of those things thatI was just like, I don't really
feel like I need to watch TopGun, but I really did enjoy it.
And then I watched Top Gun Mavickright after it. I much better
movie. Actually, just I missall the gayness. I feel like,
I don't know, I don't saythat that was something I joked about.
(01:27:56):
No, I mean, it's notunlike like when we were talking about the
Hell Razer Ruber Help Raise a reboot, where it's just like, this isn't
nearly horny enough to be a truemovie, where you're like I had said
the same thing with I think Ihad said that exact thing when we went
to go see Sonic Too and theyhave the trailer from Afric, I'm like,
this doesn't look nearly gay enough tobe a true Top Gun sequel,
(01:28:19):
which I mean, it does havesome musical numbers, you know, so
I'll give it that, but yeah, but I just have to watch map.
Yeah you worth it. Yeah, that's what I've heard. I've heard.
If you have my log in forParamount Plus you should I didn't know
you still had it. I thoughtyou I still got it. No,
this is my uncle. My uncle'sstill watching Star Trek on it. I
(01:28:41):
feel bad if I just I've beenmeaning to jump back into like the Twilights,
the True like South Park Special andstuff, and I'm like, yeah,
I just didn't know you still hadit because my uncle was in that
you know, endless Star Trek hole, and you know, I understand that
where you're just like, well there'salways Star Trek, you know, like,
and you're just like, all right, you'll probably just have to message
me the details again, because it'sdefinitely locked me up by now. But
(01:29:08):
after that, Gammel del Toros Pinocchio, which we have a whole episode on,
so watch that. Watch Green Roomfor the first time. Never seen
green Room four. Actually really good. Yeah, really enjoyed that eight out
of ten. Watched Nanny, whichwas like a horror movie. Six out
of ten. It was. Itwas a good time. It's not gonna
blow you away, but it wasa good time. Then we watched this
(01:29:31):
HBO series called Love Off the Grid, which was just like these guys lay
in the woods, can they findlive even if they don't want to talk
to people and you're just like,ah, geez. But it was.
It was a fun watch, eventhough I'll give it a five out of
ten because's not like a well structuredshow or like well written or anything well
put together. It was just afunny time. But after that You People,
(01:29:58):
which was which was kind of ridiculous, but six out of ten.
After that Texas Killing Fields, whichis a documentary quite wild, seven out
of ten. Another documentary show calledstreet Food on Netflix. I'm sure you've
seen it. They do tacos. Now it's now turned into like a whole
thing, like street food, Tacos, street Food, you know, like
(01:30:21):
they've turned it into a series. But the original show was actually really good.
Not giving it, I gave ita AI ten. Netflix also put
out a kind of sci fi futuristicmovie called Warriors of the Future that was
a Chinese movie with surprisingly good CGIfor what is obviously a very low budget
(01:30:45):
movie. But it's really quite cool. It's like they a giant plant was
trying to destroy the planet and theyreleased an AI to kill it, and
then the AI try to kill them, so now they have like two problems,
and then they're trying to stop therobot whiles killing the plant at the
State. It's a big like kindof anime like movie. Uh, but
(01:31:06):
on but live action and on Netflix. Uh. But you know I'm describing
all this, but six out often. Uh. You know, like
we did a whole episode of GlassOnion. Go check it out. Uh
we Uh. I watched a MainWarrior on the Borderline Core two Uh because
(01:31:26):
they had the second half come out. Uh. I like a Main Warrior
on the Borderline. But do Ido I wish they got rid of the
weird AI mascots. Yes, pleaseGod get rid of it. That's That's
what I'll say, because that showwould be ten times better if they didn't
have all the weird like cute cAI stuff. Stall. Then I watched
Stolen Youth The Cult of Sarah Lawrencereally good documentary seven out of ten.
(01:31:51):
Uh. Watched a a pretty baduh disaster movie called Moonfall four out of
ten. Good time, but inlike a bad way, you know,
like you know, like you're likethis is a bad movie, but like
this it's good time. Then meand Sean talked about it before, but
not in an episode. Roald Dall'sMatilda the musical. Uh eight ted that
(01:32:14):
it. Guys, that's all forsake of time, go watch Matilda musical.
Very surprising if you're if you've everwatched that as a kid, you
will really enjoy this musical actually surprising. Watched The Strays afterward, which was
a horror movie. Uh six outof ten, had a pretty good you
(01:32:36):
know ending kill but you know overallafter that Babylon with Margot, Robbie and
a bunch of other famous people.Yeah, I enjoyed it. Seven point
five is when I gave it.Yeah, I feel like, blow your
socks off. But I love moviesso like I still have movies, but
(01:32:59):
just the energy it gives off hasalways like spoken to me as just like
a lot of people really shout onthis movie, and I feel like it's
not gonna be I feel like I'mgonna like it when I watch it.
Yeah. That's the thing is alot of people were kind of shitting on
it, but it's just because it'skind of rude and crude in a lot
of ways. And and and Ithink that that's that it's trying to get
(01:33:20):
that across, is that sometimes youknow, making movies is a dirty fucking
business. And like, and Ithink I enjoyed that, and some people
might not enjoy that. Then Talesof the Jedi, which we do,
we do an we did an episodeon that, right, we did so
(01:33:41):
yeah, eight out of ten onthat. The next up, the murdou
Murders, The Southern Scandal actually solid, really solid documentary, seven out of
ten in kind of somehow current news. I watched Roadhouse for the first time
this year, which I didn't thinkwould be a current thing. And then
yes to day they dropped the trailerfor Roadhouse on Coming Up with Jake Jonehall
(01:34:03):
and uh, but but that movieactually looks I don't know, it might
be good. I don't know.Roadhouse is wild and fun, but it's
like also kind of a mess.So I'm not against a remake. Yeah,
exactly, so I'm I'm I was. I was for the original movie.
I liked it, and I'm fora remake. After that, I
(01:34:27):
watched Elvis, which I really enjoyed. It's the first. Uh what's that
director to show? Baz Luhrman.I don't love his movies. I don't.
I really don't, because you evenliked you even like his like Romeo
and Juliette. I can't stand it. I do like Romeo and Juliette.
I will give it that because it'sjust fucking yeah. I'm not a big
(01:34:49):
mole on Rouge fan, even thoughmary Is and I we've listened to.
I do like the sound I almostlike the soundtrack more than I do because
it's a vehicle you've already heard.But I will say Elvis is I think
his crowning jewel other than Romeo andJuliet. I feel like it's probably his
(01:35:10):
best movie after that Triangle of Sadness, which was up for the previous year
for Best Original Script and it wasup for Best Picture and everything like that.
So I was watching it. It'sgood. It was one of those
ones that's probably a little too pretentiousand that's why it was nominated, you
know. But overall it is cooland has good performances and asked some good
(01:35:35):
questions. But yeah, it's notgonna make you be like, whoa holy
shit? Like the next movie WomenTalking, Women Talking is I don't.
It came out on twenty twenty two, so it's not my favorite of the
year, but it would be outof the movies I've seen this year,
probably in my top ten. Boo. It just how powerful one's performances.
(01:36:00):
Uh, the writing is uh,and just how tense that movie feels the
entire time is incredible. Uh.Absolutely the highest recommendation for women talking.
Then I saw the Disney Pixar turningred. Uh, sop solid. I'm
not. I don't hate it.I don't hate it. It's good time.
(01:36:21):
I'm not gonna I'm not gonna shoton it to Sean, have you
seen it turning red? No?Not yet. I think you. I
think you like it. It's notgonna You're not gonna be like, Wow,
Pixar's back baby, but you're gonnabe like all right, you know,
like or Disney's back baby, butyou're gonna be like all right,
cool. Next up the Banchi's ofInchin uh Intershian. Great movie, so
(01:36:47):
good, yeah, uh yeah,oh my god, just just yeah.
It blew my socks off, justreally good stuff. Uh. We already
talked about Creed three in a wholeepisode, so we won't talk about it
here, but that out. Uh. And I think we also did we
do an ant man in the Waspinto the Quantum Realm episode we didn't do.
We didn't give it a separate episode, but we did like take time
(01:37:09):
to talk about it when we weredoing We did take that talk about it,
So I won't I won't go intoit a little bit more. But
yeah, at the time, atthe time, I gave it a seven
out of ten, and kind ofnow, in the context of it not
even panning out to be anything withKang, you kind of have to even
drop it even further, you know, like where it's just like, oh,
(01:37:30):
so this movie that could have beenlike a front precursor to more Kang
madness. Uh, it's not iseven more not something? Well, I
guess you would have to more judgethat if you watch Loki season two,
because Kang's still in that and tosay, I like, at least that
maybe ties something up if there's anylike some sort of closure. Yeah,
(01:37:50):
I haven't seen Loki season two. There you go, now, Uh Capturing
the Killer Nurse. Uh documentary.I think it was on Hulu or Max
really good. Eight out of ten. Lullabies was a horror movie which was
actually really fun. It was likea Jewish horror movie. Totally worth it
(01:38:15):
for that it being unique in thataspect, but overall it had some bad
CGI and stuff like that, butlike overall actually kind of cool in some
ways. Place to Breathe and sothese three are documentaries. Every year I
do this one film festival, VinfinnFilm Festival which they highlight documentaries and these
(01:38:42):
three movies was part of it.A Place to Breathe, Unseen and twenty
five Prospects Street. Place to Breathewas solid. Unseen was the real hero
here because Unseen was about like parentswho are kind of you know, floating
the whole household sort of thing, you know, like it's and it was
(01:39:04):
like kind of like how the governmentdoesn't support these like these these people who
are kind of doing it by themselvesand it's kind of like talking about them,
which was kind of cool. Andthen twenty five Prospect Street is about
a theater, which was I thinkit was not as good, but it
was. It was saunid documentary. Then uh, Gamera Guardian of the Universe,
(01:39:28):
which is the original game, whichis the two thousands Gamera movie.
I had never seen that those Gameramovies solid actually a good time. Yeah,
I've heard that that series like thatera for Gamera is like really good.
(01:39:49):
Yeah it is. It's it's kindof like the same. It's kind
of was a golden time of Kaijimovies because you had good Godzilla movies,
you had good Gamera movies, andI they're both kind of like have great
special effects and great suit stuff goingon, and it's worth seeing. After
that, I saw Mobile Suit GundamTwilight Acxis, which is a very short
(01:40:13):
it's just a short, but itwas solid seven out of ten. Then
we had an old episode on theSuper Mario Brothers movie, so you can
go and watch that. And wehad an old episode on John Wick Chapter
four, so go check that outtoo. So that's two movies in a
row. A significant other which Ithink was a horror movie. I'm pretty
sure. Sometimes the horror movies andthe documentaries get a little mixed up.
(01:40:38):
But seven out of ten A reallybad disaster movie. Watch sometimes you just
like watching bad disaster movies. GeoStorm really bad, just spectacularly bad.
Three out of ten. Perfect Storm, though, that's a good disaster movie.
That's a I've never seen the PerfectStorm. Somebody it's been a long
(01:40:59):
time who lived in Massachusetts, youknow, like I should have seen the
Perfect Storm. Great, it wasgreat. I had a great time.
Would recommend. Then The Black Phonewith you know Ethan Hawk, Yeah,
Joe Hill short story. Have youseen that one yet? I haven't.
No, you would like it.I think you would really enjoy it,
(01:41:21):
just as kind of like that modernhorror movie kind of thing where you're like,
all right, cool, it's notgonna be like, oh Jesus Christ,
it really scared me, but itis. It is good, so
you know, definitely not gonna makeyou stay up at night, but yeah,
I know, nothing does. ThenThe Rental, which was another horror
(01:41:45):
movie five out of ten, wasn'tas good the Hole in the Ground,
which I it was kind of likeentertaining, and then it kind of blew.
It's one of those things where ithad a terrible beginning and a great
ending for a hole in the ground. The ending was kind of like the
thing. So once it hit,it was hitting, but before that it
(01:42:06):
was it wasn't you know what Imean. But then, uh, watch
the special Jimmy o'yang. Guess howmuch that so good? We have an
whole episode on Guards the Galaxy volumethree, Go listen to that. That
is probably in my top ten forthis year still. And then next up
(01:42:26):
Triangle, which was another horror movieabout a boat, you know, being
on a being in the triangle onthe boat just keeps resetting on them.
Some cool effects and cool things goingon overall, like a five point five.
I'd never seen heavy metal until thisyear. Uh so I watched that
next to gotta say heavy Metals good, that's heavy metal. That's not heavy
(01:42:48):
metal when I was a kid.Yeah, I'm sure you did. I'm
sure you did. Bore, butit is. It's definitely not for kids,
but it's definitely worth seeing though. That's when I was a kid.
I had never seen Lake Placid before. Definitely hilarious and worth watching. A
(01:43:09):
documentary that was really good, TheSecrets of Hillsong, going into like the
Hillsong Church and it's kind of manyweird controversies. You're like, holy fuck.
Then The Cursed, which was anotherhorror movie which was actually quite solid.
Seven out of ten. This SpiderMan Across the Spider Verse. We
(01:43:30):
did a whole episode on that.Go check it out. Out of ten,
also in the top ten this year. A League of their Own.
I've never seen a League of theirOwn. I don't know. That was
another weird gap in my film knowledge. I've seen it but it's been a
long time, so I don't remembermuch. But I you know, I
grew up as a baseball kid,so I don't know why I hadn't seen
it, so but it definitely worthit. Seven point five One of one
(01:43:55):
of my favorite documentaries of the year, Jarard from Subway Catching a Monster.
Jesus Christ, if you grew upwatching Jared on subway commercials, uh,
this is a documentary to watch,so you'd be you can just be in
horror. We do love watching Ghostof Adventures and they're all really bad.
(01:44:16):
Uh. So we watched one oftheir documentary, their full movie lank Ones
called Lake of Death three out often. But then we uh watched Castle
in the Sky. I'd never seenCastle in the Sky because we're trying to
watch more studio ghibli, I'm tryingto watch them all, and Castle in
the Sky was absolutely fan It wasfantastic. Holy shit, did I love
(01:44:40):
that movie? Like, I mean, I like Tyles Moviecastle. I really
did. H and I see whysome people are head over heels about that.
But Castle in the Sky spoke tome. I was like, yeah,
there we go, that's this isthe fucking I was like, yeah,
there you're just like, damn. Now, before I say this next
one this it was before the MattRife his full special came out, like
(01:45:05):
the one on Netflix. So hehad one called Walking Red Flag, which
was not the one that's caused thecontroversy. It's just him doing crowd work.
I enjoyed that. I thought thatMatt Rife was really good at that
crowd work. I thought he wasreally quick and he was back at it.
(01:45:26):
I enjoyed that crowd work special eventhough it was made a special.
It's like thirty minutes and he wasjust like crowdworking, and I thought that
was really funny. Now I didwatch the I watched like maybe half an
hour of the his specially went onNetflix and has caused all the controversy and
everything that's not funny. I've watchedit, and I I turned it off
(01:45:50):
before the controversy happened. I justdidn't think it was a funny special.
I just thought he was not beingvery funny. And then the whole controversy
came out, like and I andand they were mad about shit. I
didn't even get to watch, youknow, I didn't even get that far
in the special, and I waslike oh it got worse. You know,
You're just like, oh, thishe said some dumb ass shit.
(01:46:12):
You're like, okay, But it'sone of those things that I thought that
his Proud Work special that he puton YouTube was better. But at this
point I don't want to, youknow, I don't want to support him
at all. It really it's justdone. One of those things where you're
like, no, no, thankyou. But then after that, Sins
(01:46:33):
The Mother, which was another documentarygreat eight ten, Baby Ruby, which
which is another horror movie, whichwas solid seven out of ten, The
Miracle, Children of the Amazon, strange, but the ten you know,
the weird one, another horror movie. You watched Joshua about it like a
(01:46:58):
tiny little creepy kid six out often, Enemies of the State, which
is another documentary, you know, seven out of ten, solid stuff.
We had a whole episode on theLast Picture Show, but eight point five
at ten good time. Next upis me trying to catch up on DC
stuff. I watched Black Adam fiveout of ten, only a five out
(01:47:23):
of ten because of just as societyis there. Otherwise that movie is a
I don't want it. I don'tjust stop, just like The Rock took
Black Adam, which was like acool concept and that he liked, and
then he fucked it. He justhe just screwed it up. He just
didn't even think he liked Black Adam. I just think it was the closest
(01:47:45):
thing he knew he was going tobe able to play the Superman and just
turned it into a vanity project aroundthat Black Good Black Adam sure was the
coolest fucking superhero movie of two thousandand nine. And then after that,
uh, Shazam Fury of the Gods, which was not much better, and
like at the time I gave ita six out of like kind of being
(01:48:09):
like there was parts I enjoyed, but like, thinking back on it now,
I don't. It's like I havemore venom for that movie than I
did walking out of it. It'sone of those things where I'm just like,
what was that? Why did wewaste time? You know? So
it's like at the time I walkedout being like no dead, but now
I'm kind of like with the DCUniverse ending, I'm like, why did
(01:48:29):
we make another Shazam movie and makeit not cool DC villains or anything nice,
you know, like anything cool?Like we just we just swung at
nothing here and it's just a wasteof time. Uh. But then DC
League of super Pets afterward. Solidfor a kids movie, I'll give it.
And that's where I give a lotof lenience here. Solid. Uh
(01:48:51):
it's not gonna it's not gonna mightbe your kid's favorite movie, but it's
not gonna be your favorite, youknow, is what I'll say. Then
we walked some more of the ghostAdventure documentaries, which they both get three
ten Ghost Adventures house calls, andthen they had a ghost Aventure's Top ten
show where they showed all the besttest Ghost Adventure moments, which is the
(01:49:11):
way I wanted to see Ghost Venturesanyways. Was all Zach being like square
up ghosts and the ghost being likehow fucking dare you and Zach being like
shit like it's just like god damn. Uh. But then after that we
have a whole episode on Barbie andOpen Himer, So go listen to those
episodes. I had never seen HungerGames. Uh, solid though six out
(01:49:33):
of ten weird movie, but uh, I'm gonna watch the rest of them
now. Just haven't you know, haven't gone back? John Mulaney, baby
j very good, h very solid, Netflix put out a funny series called
How to Become a Cult Leader, which was like uh, Peter dank Glitch
(01:49:53):
doing like you know, cult leaderhistory, but like posing it as like
how you should be a cult leader, which was like kind of a fun
way to write it, you know, like it was it was, it
was worth it. I think wetalked about earlier this year. But Jules,
which was Ben Kingsley movie, whichwas this independent movie I saw in
theaters, which was really great aboutlike these this kind of like these older
(01:50:17):
people in town meeting this alien andkind of like taking care of him,
and it was just it was wonderful, really worth it. Then The Flash
we did a whole episode in thatHouse of Darkness. Not so good.
Five out of ten. The LittleMermaid Live Action remake, God damn it.
(01:50:40):
Five out of ten. That's all. I'll say. Practical Magic.
I had never seen Practical Magic withSandra Bullock another five out of ten.
I watched twenty seven Dresses for thefirst time and the last time. Four
out of ten. Mama seven pointfive out of ten. Good time,
good, good horror movie. I'llbe give you that Willie's Wonderland, which
if you were disappointed with Five Knightsof Freddy's. If you went and you
(01:51:03):
saw that and you were like, dad, was you Five Knights of Freddie's.
Nicholas Cage doesn't say a word inthis Five Nights at Freddie's take,
and he beats the shit out ofthem, and I will say, you
should watch Willie's Wonderland. But stillsix out of ten. You know it's
not the best movie. But man, if you were looking for that itch
of Five Nights of Freddie's, that'sthis is the movie, not the other
(01:51:26):
one. Never seen The Craft before. I did enjoy it. I do
think it's a little bit of amess, but it is. I don't
I didn't enjoy it, and Ican see why the cult status is there.
And then come to Daddy, whichwas a documentary UH finished Midnight Mass
(01:51:47):
which was which was actually really great. I never finished it, and the
really awesome show, really surprising kindof just what if vampires were Catholic?
You know sort of thing, andyou're just like, oh shit, watch
Meg too. The Trench, whichbasically was like, yo, we got
(01:52:08):
a big somehow a bigger budget forthis movie, and you're like why and
they but they then they spend itwell you know, like they're like more
megalodons and weird suits and stuff, and you're like, all right, cool
Cole, So good time with thatnever seen basket case, Saw a basket
case? Yeah that oh good, old, good old Frank Heavin Lotter,
(01:52:30):
Yeah, good that is. That'sThat's a time is basically it. Then
the Sentinel, which was not good. It's it's a four out of town.
That watched the documentary debt First Heard, which was very interesting. Watched
the movie Tammy, which should itwas pretty good. Watch that Jesse Eisenberg
(01:52:55):
movie Vavarium, which I think itmay have been too big for its bridges.
Is basically the short review of that, but it's solid, but I'll
still give it a five out often. A really solid movie which me
and Mary still talk about. Thisis dead End. It's a horror movie
(01:53:18):
where they basically die on the highwayand they don't know they're dead on the
highway and it just like keeps beinghorrifyingly weird things going on, and it's
kind of just like a Stranger It'skind of like a Twilight Zone episode but
gruesome and more. Yeah, it'sjust good, a good time. Then
(01:53:40):
we talked about Astros Evel Dead inOur Astros stiveld Deads. So I watched
all three seasons of that, andwe watched Evil Dead. Rise talked about
that in episode now. One ofthe things I wanted to get into this
year and I still haven't finished,is watching all the Terrifier movies. So
I started with what he first popsup been in All Hollows Eve, which
(01:54:01):
is kind of just three horror shortfilms that they kind of slap together with
Terrifier, you know, like withArt the Clown and and it's not good.
Ye, So this this kind ofthis, this is not it's not
it's not terrifyer, you know, like that is not what that the series,
(01:54:25):
what everyone's talking about when they're talkingabout Terrifier, even though it might
be the start. So it's goodto see that start, to see that
kind of like student film start, which you're like, wow, look at
that style from this guy. Youknow, like I could see why they
were like, we got to turnthese short films into something, yeah,
because it has a lot of styleto it. But All Hou's Eve is
not it Terrifier. Though I didwatch that, that's later on this list.
(01:54:49):
I liked a lot more and hasa lot more everything. I still
need to see Terrifier too, whichI hear is even better. So as
my kind of like small project offinishing the Terrifier movies, I still need
to finish Terrified too because I feellike it's worth it, and Terrified three
is coming soon, so it mightbe worth it. Then I've only got
(01:55:12):
a couple left in here. DocumentaryThe Beatles Now and then actually really solid
eight ten. Another documentary Escaping TwinFlames, really good. It's kind of
a fucked up cult. You're like, okay, damn. After Shock The
Everest and the Nepal Earthquake another documentaryabout the earthquake in Nepal and how it
(01:55:34):
affected all the climbers on Everest thatday, and you're just like, oh
shit, that's terrible, that's terrifying. We have an old episode talking about
Scott Pilgrim takes off, so gocheck that episode out. Did get to
see Thanksgiving the Eli Roth horror moviein theaters, and it's I mean it's
a six out of ten, butlike it's fun, Like I had a
(01:55:56):
good time. Like I would recommendthis movie, you know, like and
especially as like a Massachusetts horror moviethat gives it. I would push it
up to a seven just because it'sa you know, it's a Massachusetts horror
movie. You know, you're likecool. Uh, you know, it's
kind of it's kind of funny inthat way, you're like, all right
now. After that, I watchedShop around the Corner, which was a
(01:56:19):
kind of it's a classic uh Christmasmovie with Jimmy is it who's the guy
from It's a Wonderful Life, JimmyWho's the main Jimmy Stewart, So with
Jimmy Stewart, Uh, and uh, but it's it's solid sucking. It's
no, It's a wonderful life, but it was it was funny. And
then we found some a weird seriesthat went for a while, uh called
(01:56:43):
The Thin Man. There's like sixor seven movies about uh, this detective
couple that is just solving mysteries thatbecame kind of a six movie franchise.
Uh. But the thing is isthe on the movie, the first one's
called the thin Man because they're likeinvestigating a thin man, but like all
(01:57:03):
the rest of them are like somethingwith the thin Man in the title,
and you're like, but there's nomore thin Man. You're you're like,
what the fuck, You're like theshit. But it wasn't act. The
first one wasn't super great, soI don't even know how they made it
into six movies, but uh yeah, it's four out of then on that
one. Next one, Love hasWon The Cult of Mother God super weird
(01:57:28):
documentary where the cult believed that shewas God and basically when she died,
they thought she would come back becauseshe was like, I'm Jesus, I'll
be back in like three days, and they were like okay, and they
basically carried around a dead body overstate lines and did a bunch of other
illegal stuff with the dead body justto because they thought she would come back.
(01:57:49):
They were like yeah, you know, like and you're like no,
no, so kind of a horrifyingwatch, but in like a fun way
and then actually in actual fun things. Uh. Mary Little Batman was and
for some reason, Amazon Prime animatedBatman Christmas movie. Uh totally worth watching.
(01:58:15):
And I say that as a Batmanfan, but also as like,
you know, looking for good Christmasmovies. Uh this, Uh, Mary
Little Batman is on the list.Now. It's totally worth watching. It's
a lot of fun that it shouldbe added to your rotation of Christmas movies
every year. It's a good it'sa good time. It's cute, really
(01:58:38):
good animation, and it kind oflooks like a raw doll novel animated,
you know, in a lot ofways, and that's kind of cool,
you know. Like. Then nextup is probably my movie of the year,
and this and this is just becauseI love this big, big lizard.
But I'm gonna say Godzilla Minus oneis probably my favorite that came out
(01:59:00):
in twenty twenty three and I sawin twenty twenty three, you know,
like because it just I had sucha good time. I'm gonna go see
it again, probably this next weekwith Godzilla minus Color. So it's just
I think it's my favorite out ofall all of them, and that it
might not be the best, butis it my favorite. Yeah, yeah,
it's it's my It's probably my favoriteof the year. But is it
(01:59:25):
the best movie? Probably not,but is it It's a good time.
We have a whole episode on it. Go check it out. But next
up, I watched Little Women, the New the newest one, you know,
with Emma Watson and Gregor Gerway.Yeah, great, I see why
they were like yes, you're directingBarbie after this, you know, like
(01:59:45):
is because this is what a greatmovie. They able to adapt the you
know, the the book and ableto change it and do a lot of
modern and updated things to it andkeep it interesting. And I was like,
wow, okay, all right, see now, you know, like
definitely worth the watch. Next up, more Christmas movies. I'd never seen
(02:00:06):
The Holiday Affair, which was actuallyreally good with carry grant. I'll give
it credit there, but I willsay, why are so many christs movies
about cheating on your significant other? What the fuck is that about? Like,
I really don't understand why so manyChristmas movies are about that? Speaking
of trashy Christmas movies, though,i'd never seen Love Actually. What an
(02:00:29):
absolute ass movie. You can clip. We'll fucking clip that for YouTube shorts.
Love Actually is bad. It's reallybad. It's really bad. And
it's like it's one of those likeboomer movies where they're like, hah,
isn't this joke funny? Because atthe expense of all these people, you
know, like it's just like it'sjust it's weird, where you're like,
(02:00:53):
how could I even root for anyof these characters? They're all doing bad
things. Like the only reason whyI'm rooting for them or even like them
is because they're actors. I like, Otherwise they're all just doing terrible shit
the entire movie. Yeah, it'snot even one of those things. Were
like, that's part of the point. You're just like, no, you
think these are reasonable people. Yeah, it's just like, uh, but
(02:01:14):
yes, definitely one of those thingsI've never seen before. I will not
watch. My God, I can'tbelieve that movie is people's like Christmas movie.
You're like, you're what rewatching thisevery year? This? Like what?
God damn it. But besides thepoint, moving on, I was
trying to catch up on some moreDC movies. I watched Superman, Man
of Tomorrow Man not so great, five out of ten. It kind of
(02:01:39):
took the Man of Tomorrow book andbutchered it in a lot of ways,
and not in a fun way.So not so great. What is good
though, was Batman Sold the Dragon. Basically it how do you describe it?
It's just kind of like martial artsand the and just happen to have
(02:02:00):
Batman in it. Yeah, yeah, basically is is like it, what's
the Bruce Lee movie with the yellowjumpsuit. It's oh my god, why
can't I think of it? Ithink, I think enter the Dragon,
and I think enter the Dragon.Thank you, Enter the Dragon. Uh.
It is basically enter the Dragon. If Batman was in. It is
(02:02:23):
basically the kind of plot. Andyou know what, that's a good idea
and it's a good it's a goodtime. Totally totally worth seeing. Off
real fast. Another another Christmas movie, The Family Stone bad five out of
ten. Jesus Christ but not notnot so good. I didn't like that
(02:02:44):
one. A Castle for Christmas somehowbetter but six out of ten. Uh,
the Money Pit with Tom Hanks.Uh. They were obviously trying to
make him like Slapstick Star, butthen the movie tries to get very serious
at the end. Uh. Thenthe Wind Rises. I had never seen
that, Deshaun, I see whyit's one of your favorites. It's a
great movie. I don't know ifit's my favorite, but it is of
(02:03:09):
the ghibli movies, but it isgreat. I see why. Yeah.
Then Great Gardens, I had neverseen Great Gardens before. Great, great,
great documentary. Probably one of myfavorites actually, just fantastic. Then
Mommy Dearest, which was quite thedocumentary. And then for shows that I
didn't finish but was watching throughout theyear was Master Chef season one through eleven.
(02:03:33):
Watched season one through eleven of MasterChef this year, and we're on
the last two episodes of season thirteennow. And then I'm on the I
watched season one through three of Hunterx Hunter, which we will have to
do a whole episode on Hunter Hunter. Sorry, I will have to do
a whole episode on Hunter Hunter atthat time. So yeah, sorry,
yeah, right, sorry to Sean. That's the end of my list,
(02:03:57):
So you're gonna have to run lightninground right, So knives out, Glass
Onion and Canto, very good Memory, The Origins of Alien, which is
an alien documentary, uh, Skinof ma Rink and analog horror movie that
I was talking about wasn't good.Don't like it, No, didn't like
it. But to be fair,I am biased. I fucking hate found
footage type movies. Oh okay, okay, all right. People were like
(02:04:21):
that's the best horror movie of lastyear, and I was like, shot
that ship was so boring. Iwas like, damn germal do toros Pinocchio.
Good Night Appy, which was adocumentary about the Martian Rover. Oh
yeah, the Sound of Double Oseven, which is about all the Bond
themes just sort of like at justsort of like a retrospective all of them
(02:04:45):
and how they were made, includingthat on HBO Prime. I think Prime.
Oh shit, I'm gonna watch that. Damn. That's solid. They
even go into stuff like the unmadesong for Specter because originally Radio supposed to
do it. Yeah, and thenwe got the sand Smith song instead,
which I like. Yeah, Ilike that song too. I like that
(02:05:05):
song. I like In Search ofDarkness Part three another documentary. It's like
a fucking six hour documentary about eightieshorror movies. It's amazing, incredible stuff.
Uh. Creed three already talked aboutit. Quantamnia, Ginger Snaps.
I just felt like putting it onand watching a commentary. We have a
whole episode about that. It's agreat one. Yeah, we do.
(02:05:28):
It's a great one. Tropic ThunderI did a group watch of that because
I had a bunch of friends whohadn't seen it and I had to correct
it. Yeah, that is somethingto correct. I've seen a lot of
people discovering Tropic Thunder this year, which I think is funny, you know,
people being like yeah, you know, and you're just like no,
no, no, no no no, You're like wait wait wait wait,
it's part of the point. Yeah, like wait, you gotta watch it.
(02:05:49):
Uh. Watched The Stepfather because itwas the last Driving episode the year
Earth Changed documentary. Watched The TrumanShow when I was down in Jersey because
the two friends I was hanging outwith hadn't seen The Truman Show. So
sure, Super Mario Brothers movie. That's who I saw it in theaters with
while I was down there. Cool. Uh Susan May which is Makoto Shinkai's
(02:06:10):
latest movie he directed Your Name.Liked it and how was it? Liked
it? I liked it more thanhis the one with the door right the
yeah there's yeah, They're like, have you seen this door yet? I
didn't like it as much as YourName, but I liked it better than
Weathering. He's with you his lastmovie. Okay, it's good to know.
(02:06:30):
Watch Clerks and mal Rats again becauseyou know, sometimes you just got
to watch Clerks and maul Rats.Uh. Tetris, which is the biopic
movie that Apple TV put out.If you don't know the story of how
Tetris was made. It's a wholeass thing that involved the Soviet Union and
it is a very interesting story thatI had already known about beforehand, So
(02:06:50):
when they turned it into a movie, I was super excited to watch it.
And it's cool. Yeah, doesn'tdramatize it too too much? Yeah,
to see their stuff that just like, we got to pump this up
to make this movie. But it'snothing. It's nothing too egregious. Okay,
Evil Dead Rise, we already talkedabout it, John Wick, Chapter
four, Chasing Amy. I watchedal Virus Haunted Hills another Last Drive in
(02:07:13):
episode. I watched Brothers the Idon't know if I've ever seen any Elvira
like movie. I don't know ifI've ever done that, like should I
like? Yeah, basically the firstone is solid. Yeah, Okay.
Then I watched Bros. Which isthe what's his name? It's the it's
the romantic comedy with the two withthe two male leads. Oh yes,
(02:07:38):
yes, from the comedian his nameis escaping me right now? Yes,
yeah, but I know what you'retalking. Yeah, it was. It
was really funny. Uh Jane Solemnpopstrike Back. I think it's because I
was getting someone into the Yes,yes, uh, I think I was
going through the US universe again becauseI was getting someone else into it.
(02:07:59):
That's why this is on here.Air. I watched the doc in that
biopic that they had made about likethe creation of like Air Jordan just on
It was fine. I'm starting toget a little weirded out by all these
like corporate fucking biopics about like products. Yeah, me too, where they're
like, we can make money becausethe founder made money, you know,
(02:08:20):
like and you're just like the founderwas a different thing. The founder's really
good. But like no one wantsto fucking who cares about how flaming hot
Cheetos were made? Yeah that's Commons. That's a TV special, not a
fucking feature length film anyway. They'relooking for popcorn. Another last drive in
making apes the artists who changed films. It was just about the makeup artists
(02:08:43):
beyond the original planet of the Apesmovies specifically. That's cool one. Yeah,
under the Boardwalk. The Monopoly storyit was is just about like the
different versions of Monopoly, how itwas made and like how crazy like the
tournament scene and ship for it is. There's a tournament scene of Monopoly.
I didn't know what the fuck.Uh. Watched the original Fletch Oh nice,
(02:09:05):
Yeah, because I hadn't seen itin a while. Zach and Mary
make a Porno because we were doingmore Kevin Smith stuff across the Spider Verse.
Watched The Menu Pneumona yep. Yeah. The Baba Duke another last drive
in the bat Duke was our lastdriving. Yeah, it was the last
driving Child's Play. This is wherewe started getting into like some horror movies.
(02:09:30):
I think Child's Play, Uh,Candy Man nineteen ninety and Candy Man
twenty one, Baby Driver Last Nightand soho Oppenheimer in the Ater. This
is then we're like obviously in Octoberat this point. That's why it's so
like potentially yeah yeah. Uh TheFlash, Evil Dead, Evil Dead two,
(02:09:50):
Army of Darkness, Evil Dead twentythirteen, Evil Dead Rise. This
was for gearing up for doing theepisode added in Eddie Big Picture Show because
I'd like gone through the whole seriesagain. Violet Evergarden. The movie super
disappointing ending. If they just cutit off like twenty minutes, it would
have been like earlier, it wouldhave been perfect. Really. Yeah,
(02:10:11):
geez, imagine undermining the entire pointof your series in like the last twenty
minutes, Jesus the Machine, theBurt Kreischer movie, but Russia not very
good. Didn't like it? No, no, because I was like Mark
Campbell, yay, Like I waslike, hey, but I saw the
reviews weren't. Then it's like fullOctober Movies, Texas, Chainsaw masak or
two. One cut of the Dead, Red Eye, Dragged Me to Hell,
(02:10:33):
the Ritual Night of the Demons Day, How is one cut of the
Dead? Sorry, it's very good. It's very good. Yes, cool?
Sorry, go ahead, keep going. Yeah, I literally have like
five minutes. I know. I'mso sorry now of the Demons, Day
of the Dead, in the Mouthof Madness, Village of the Damn Halloween
seventy eight, Perfect Blue. AndI think that was it for like horror
(02:10:54):
movies. And I started watching otherstuff, Steve Jobs because I love putting
Steve Jobs on. We've talked tohim, who doesn't. Yeah, you
you talked about it. We've hada whole episode about it. You watch
it often? Yeah, Gattiga,Gone Girl, Jango, Unchained the Shining
Bottom, which I saw in theatersthat was actually really funny. I feel
like it's really tough to do likeraunchy comedy of that style now, and
(02:11:16):
that was actually a good version ofit. Uh, talk to me.
It was all right, everyone wasreally everyone was really talking that one up.
I liked Smile, but I did. I don't know why that wasn't
on my list here, but Ilike Smile, but since he talked to
me. Living with Chucky, Uh, just a Chucky documentary about the series,
(02:11:37):
and like its impact on pop culture. Black Christmas, the Hitcher,
the two thousand and five House ofthe Wax, which is better than I
remember it. I I always likedisliked it growing up. Watching it again,
I'm like, this is actually notbad. It's just not a House
a Wax movie. It's more ofa remake of Tourist Trap than House a
(02:11:58):
Wax. Yeah, Pontipool, theoriginal Beetlejuice getting people into it. Watch
the Mask because it's one of myfavorite Jim Carrey movies. Oh yeah,
Small Soldiers because I like Joe Dante. Oh, I mean, Small Soldiers
is fantastic one of my childhood likefans because I just loved the imagination of
it. Scream Scream two. I'mlike, slowly working my way through the
(02:12:20):
screen movies again, so I couldfucking watch the new ones. I need
to do that because I've only everwatched the original, so I've never watched
any of the other ones. Well, my problem is I love the first
two and I hated three and four, So I had to watch three and
four again and I finally did.Now I can watch the fifth one,
Child's Play one, two and three, Panic Room, Barbarian, Jennifer's Body,
(02:12:41):
Motel, Hell, The Hunger,Child's Play, three, Bride of
Chucky, Seed of Chucky, CursiveChucky, Albert Brooks Defending My Life,
which is a documentary about Albert Brooks, the comedian and actor, and like
the stuff that he's done, whichturned into a whole kick of like watching
a bunch of the movies he's directed, which I feel like I found it
treasure trove of stuff. There's beenreally great stuff. But the Holdovers I
(02:13:05):
saw, which is one of myfavorite movies from this year. I want
to be surprised if that takes homea lot of awards this Oscars. That
was great and one of the scenesthat was a shot was actually at the
Summerfield Theater and I went to gosee it at the Summerfield Theater. So
it was great, that's so cool, that's so cool. And then yep,
a few of these are Albert Brooksdirected movies, which are all really
(02:13:26):
good. Lost in America, DefendingYour Life in Modern Romance. I saw
Saltburn. Wild fucking movie. Yes, wild movie. But I will say
it's just a horror movie. LikeI think that some people are just not
used to horror movies in a lotof way. People watch don't watch enough
movies. Yeah, because I dothink it's wild, and I think it's
worth the attention it got. ButI do. It's one of those things
(02:13:50):
where people were like I couldn't evenlike fathom you know, like and you're
just like, you're like, eh, what I watched? I was like,
I was like, yes, isit disgusting? Yes, it unfathomable.
Not in my horror movie world.I don't know. Yeah, that's
how my entire life. People aresoft. But I did it. I
do enjoy. I did enjoy themovie. And you can't go on in
(02:14:11):
tangent for like I got minutes.Murder on the Dance Floor is fantastic.
Sorry, go ahead, Blue Beetle. Matilda, Matilda the Musical, The
Batman because I just felt like watchingThe Batman again. David Holmes The Boy
Who Lives, which is the documentaryabout Daniel Radcliffe's a stunt double up until
Goblet of Fire who had like areally bad accident. Mm hmm, yeah,
it's terrible. Fantastic mister Fox,because I just felt like watching Fantastic
(02:14:35):
mister FX. It's a good, really good Fall movie. Like it's not
specifically a Halloween movie, but itgives you like nice fall vibes. Yeah,
lots of leaves. Yeah, tickticboom, like watching it again really
good. Yeah, And that's comingfrom someone who hates Rent, So you
know they did a good job. What did you say? We're gonna have
to do an episode on that? But what like Rent? I do not
(02:15:00):
like Rent. No, it's okay, I understand all you need to know
about Rent. The Lindsay Ellis videoessay. Have you watched the Rent video
that you made? Yes? Ithink yeah, Yeah, that pretty much
sums it up. American Maid, which starts a whole fucking thing of the
movies that I watched near the endof the year that have the first word
American in them. I was almostgoing to make a joke about like,
(02:15:22):
Wow, this franchise is really confusingbecause I watched American Maid, I watched
all four American Pie movies. Iwatched American and I watched American Fiction.
Oh it's just like wow, superconfusing. The Santa Claus Paddington Paddington two,
which I finally watched the Paddington movies. They're really good. They're very
fucking charming. That's awesome. LostWorld, Jurassic Park because a book Club

That's a thing with me. Azaki, even if people don't want to
admit it. Saw X, whichI actually surprisingly liked after hating the last
two. Yeah, Interstellar because Ifelt like putting it on Scott Pilgrim versus
the World. I watched one ofthe Dragon ball Z movies, Fusion Reborn.
(02:16:09):
I had gotten a friend who hadnever seen James Cavern's Avatar, so
we watched the two movies back toback, back to back. Yeah,
Jesus Christ, that's a whole fuckingday, Jesus. I watched The Killer,
which is a Fincher's latest with MichaelFassbender. Really really fucking dug it.
It's like a better hit Man moviethan either of the two fucking hit
(02:16:31):
Man movies. Okay, all right, band, she's an issuer in.

legends. It's an amazing show.Okay. I watched all of The Good
Place again all four seasons. Gota friend into it. Oh, fantastic.

(02:18:00):
through Smallville again like season two three. Watched all of House because I was
coming home and just needed something towatch, so I went through it all
eight season. Sure is he problematicin some episodes? Yeah, he's literally
a modern interpret He's really a Hishouse is literally a modern reinterpretation of Sherlock
Holmes. He's supposed to be aday Yeah white load of season two very
(02:18:22):
good. So I finally watched StartedThe Chucky Show, also very good.

seasons. Dear White People. Ineed to watch season three because I did
like the movie when it came out, and I felt like it would have
(02:20:16):
been better suited as a TV show. So when they made it a TV
show, I'm like, oh,perfect, That's what I wanted to be.
Good with Hell of a Boss seasonone, I'm watching season two.
It's still ongoing. Super good amongstmy favorites for the shows. Yeah,

(02:20:39):

(02:21:01):
shit show. I watched the liveaction U Hockey Show, which wasn't as
bad as I thought it would be. It's flawed, but it's still fun
for what it is. Yeah.Yeah, that's it for TV, I
think, and a bunch of animetoo. Well. Eleven hit us with
those top five top five, I'lljust go straight into the top fives.

did the Netflix reboot of Shira, which is also a show that is way
better than that has any right tobe. And then my favorite movie of

this past year, which was avery late edition, is actually American Fiction.
Oh cool, that's good. That'sa good that's a that's a good

then favorite book that I read thispast year was Words of Rady. It's
the second Stormlight Archive book. Nice, very cool. I mean I already
said my favorite movie. TV isvery hard for me because obviously I really
enjoyed my time master Chef this year, but that's not exactly came out this
(02:22:56):
year or anything. I mean thatit did the team, but like it's
not exactly it. But for Imean for this year for shows, it's
kind of hard for me to sumup. But anime wise, yeah,
it's gonna have to go to uhA Gundam because that's that was that was
my hell yeah anime for this year, but I will be trying to get
(02:23:20):
