(00:04):
Hello, mess, I'm a lieutenantin the police department. I'm in the
middle of a homicide investigation. Tryto get my prescription. Please. The
whole time you stand there with thiswhom me expression on your face, have
you ever been dragging to the sidewalkand being tell you best blood? No
(00:26):
man has spilled more blood in God'sname than I. How in the name
of Zeus is? But hole, did you get out of yourself? What
you really think? I let myselfget killed in a garbage truck. Well,
I hid in a soup can runit all the way to the city
dump because I was made for this, super baby and I have the care
(00:51):
you be guy. Ye, we'reback at game, nailed back. Hey,
hey James. One time I flewout to New Jersey to meet you.
Uh, and you know, Jos, I ran into your mom and
dad. True, that is truethat you've actually, you know what,
(01:15):
just like this this movie Mom andDad boom, nice and it was quick
and I like that. But you'veactually met my parents probably three more times
than you've ever met AJ. Well, definitely, because I've never met AJ
in person, probably like seven hundredand forty one and a half times more
(01:38):
than I've met hey something like thatleast intimately. Yeah, yeah, very
not sharing too much on the pothere. That's the one place AJA won't
go. Okay right, um uh, this is the Wickerman back at it
(01:59):
again. Um Hank Kilgore and I'mjoined as always with James Crowns. That's
me and a j Panzica. Hipto the hop just can't stop, just
like the action in this thriller comedyhorror mom and dad. Uh, I
(02:20):
don't have my notes up at allon let me. I didn't, yeh,
it was it was. I don'thave much. But this is where
I keep on my all all myinfo on it. Okay. It was
released in the US January nineteenth, twenty eighteen. We have made it into
twenty eighteen. Uh by one ofyou a shout out because it was originally
premiered at the Toronto International Film Festivalon September ninth, twenty seventeen. My
(02:46):
birthday, Oh, happy birthday, thank you, thank you. Also,
we should say so the way wedo have done these in order is based
on their release on IMDb, umso when they were released. So I
think we go go back to twentyseventeen next week, even though the US
release. Yes, so unfortunately notYeah, yeah, only only temper.
(03:08):
We have a foot out the doorof twenty seventeen. We're out of that.
We'll see a step. This wasa breath of fresh air compared to
where we've been on the show fora long time. It was directed by
Brian Taylor, who we've we've seenbefore with Ghost Writer two, Spirit of
(03:30):
Vengeance and part of the Crank Team, Um, which I talked about all
the time because I love those movies. Uh, but yeah, we got
we got our boy Nick Cage inthis movie as a Brett is his name
one. I'm pulling up the Aliinterview right now. Dad, He's just
He's just, He's just Dad.Okay, you're right. But yeah,
and then um, we have SelmaBlair as Mom, also known as here
(03:55):
it is Hindle. We got AnnieWinters as their daughter Harley, Zachary Arthur
as their son, Josh, RobertT. Cunningham as Damon, and then
in parentheses it says as Robert Cunningham, Olivia Croc as Riley, a little
(04:15):
little appearance by Lance Henriksson as asGrandpaul, and that's about it. Joseph
d Reitman was the teacher. Yeah. Um initial reactions, this is a
blast. Yeah. I mean.Cage said this was his favorite movie he'd
made in ten years when this wasreleased, and I got to agree with
(04:35):
him. I mean this movie. So I love this movie. I absolutely
loved it. The entire time.I was mouth agape watching this. There's
so many great Cage moments. Theplot is fantastic, the writing and the
acting. They're having a good time. But I don't care. I like,
(05:00):
I didn't care it was so badshit off the wall. Absolutely love
this. Okay, well I did. I wrote this note and it goes
perfectly along with what you said.Towards the end, I wrote when the
humor doesn't land, I get thesense into something that's really funny to Brian
Taylor, who also wrote it,And even though it doesn't always work,
it's so weird that I still loveit and respect it, you know,
like it's just it's because it's likethe humor in it is just it's out
(05:24):
there and and it's clearly just thatyou were just having a good time.
And this movie also has and wellyou know, I've got some audio clips
for later, but this movie hasone of the greatest monologues I've ever seen
in movie history, and I thinkwe should maybe save it and talk about
it. But yeah, just initialreaction, Kage should have won an Oscar,
(05:45):
So yeah, absolutely, Um,it's it's this with him digging back
into his German expressionism. Rude.Yes, you know, we see a
lot of the the nuances and likelittle isms and stuff that he brings into
movies like vampires kiss and face offand yeah, even ghost Rider, Like
(06:11):
yeah, he even has a faceoffline in this where he says saws.
Oh yeah, how many times theysay the sawzall in this? Oh?
For those that have not seen Momand Dad, one could check it out.
Yeah, I think can we justsay, if you haven't seen Mom
and Dad, stop listening and justgo watch it because it's sour and twenty
(06:34):
eight Yeah, it's it's part.It's it's a movie. I love I
love it. It's and it getsin there, it gets going and it
just it's a blast from yea.In it one, it's about like fifteen
twenty minutes in to when like themain plotline develops of these parents going crazy
and so like you don't have towait around for the climax, like,
(06:58):
yeah, the movie takes off,and then at like really heightened points of
action or suspense, they'll cut backto a flashback, which will be like
not only appropriate to the scene thatyou're watching, but also kind of like
you take a break from the action, and then it builds back up to
(07:20):
the action and then throws you backinto the action where you came from.
Yeah, very well paced, andthe flashbacks are like informative and fit right
into the narrative. Yeah, soreal quick, if you haven't if you
if you didn't listen to James andyou didn't stop this to go listen to
(07:41):
it. The movie is basically it'sit's very simple. Uh. A event
occurs via television static that I guessamidst a frequency it's never really explained,
but which I love, which isgreat. Yeah, and you don't need
to for this kind of thing. But basically TV start kind of freaking out
(08:01):
the assumption in some sort of frequenciesgoing out, and it makes parents want
to just immediately kill their children anddo whatever they can, and they're not
worried about killing anyone else. It'slike a zombie movie if zombies were only
trained on one specific person, azombie kind which I Actually, there were
parts of this movie, and Ishould say I was pretty high when I
watched it, but there was partsof this movie nice were scary, like
(08:26):
legitiately terrifying. It's a horror comedy, and there is a horror in it
when when like these parents would justgrab their little babies and just kill them,
and there was other people around thatwere experiencing the same thing about wanting
to kill their kids, but thenalso wanting to stop them from killing their
(08:48):
own kid, you know, likestop other people from killing their own kids.
It was it was pretty scary.I don't know. There was a
couple points that really kind of freaksme out. It's it's it's like the
New Boy. I was like, how are they going to show here?
I was waiting for it. Ihad the note ready of like they just
fucking strangled a newborn. Yea,they saved the baby. I guess,
(09:11):
good call. But U yeah,a woman like like literally has a baby.
It's like it's like, uh,some of Blair's sister or whatever.
Um, And that's like a thingthroughout the whole movies. They're like,
hey, you're you know, youraunt might have a kid any any any
day. Now you know, todaymight be the day be excited that we're
ridding to the family, because allthe all, this family's just very very
a lot of tension in friction inour main character of family. But um,
(09:35):
she has a baby and then immediatelyjust starts like trying to strangle the
thing, and the doctors have topull her off, and security comes in
and it gets really close, andyou're like, oh, oh shit,
it's nuts. It's really yeah,it's it's really intense. And I think
the other scary thing too, isthat the way this disease or whatever it
is works is that it tricks yourbrain into panic mode, which makes you
(09:58):
want to go protect your kids,so you hurried to your kids, and
then the second year, in proximityof your kids, it snaps into yeah,
I'm gonna kill though. It's socool. It's just so such fun.
It's such a fun and weird dumb. Yeah, it's uh and and
and and it could only be doneby like a director like this who's just
(10:18):
known for just doing very weird, high stakes action movies. But this translates
into a horror comedy, which isit worked really well. And I like
how they there's little lines that justlike for what it is, there is
some really good writing in there, because like whenever the lady's about to have
the baby, she's like, Ifeel something just really weird. And some
(10:39):
of it was like that's the lovethat you're gonna have for the kids,
but you're like, no, it'snot. She's like panicking kill her newborn,
you know, and like but justno yet, And it's very subtle.
Yeah it's it's it's great. Um, but yeah, we we get
we get the return of Crazy Cage. He's back and and pretty much from
the beginning because like he's like ahe's going to like a midlife crisis.
(11:01):
His character the dad, and youknow, he's he freaks out trying to
build a pool table. He's ina man cave and and he's trying to
fix up his car in the garageand he's sick of all the toys everywhere
that his son has. Um,what was the deal with his son?
I the first time I watched this, I thought that was supposed to be
like a little boy with autism andthat was like going to be part of
(11:22):
the plot, Like the first twentyminutes of this movie. Why did you
think of that? Because he's likeeight years old and home from school and
playing with like planes all day.I just it was like, weird,
No, but he doesn't really talkand like he wasn't at school, and
I thought that was going to bea whole plot line, and then it
was like, oh, it's justa it's just a kid that doesn't go
(11:43):
to school. I guess, yeah, I don't know. I was confused
about the age of the kid.I guess yeah, yeah. I think
he's pretty young. Um, andhe's he's a little dweve, but you
know, he is an absolute thekid because the he's yeah, he's like,
uh, possibly eight, possibly five, who knows, um, but
(12:07):
he's younger. And then he hasa sister. He's like eight to ten,
yeah, and his sister's probably likefourteen to six. Guns. Yes,
he does shoot a gun, whichis awesome. Oh that was the
other thing. Yeah, when hegets the gun and he's like pretending to
shoot. I don't know. There'ssomething about this boy that I thought was
going to come up with. Alittle boy, a tiny boy. He's
(12:28):
a baby boy, um, andthis movie needed him. Yes, I
can. I just like run throughmy notes poetically, sure, because a
lot of notes, but it's morelike shorthand so and then yeah, you
can pick up whatever should I whipout the bongo drums? Yeah? Nice?
(12:54):
But you reminded me to do thisbecause my very first note is Caged
Wiley like he doesn't even need hedoesn't even need the plot of this movie
to be crazy. He's crazy rightoff the right out of gate and it's
beautiful. But anyway, here wego. Cage is Wiley, Booby flashback
(13:16):
doesn't know how to food time.I love this movie. Gild Gildot out
gildo to mouth, asked to askanal bead wokey pokey fucking pokey mother Barkey,
(13:43):
return of the Goose, how muchall can be saws this magic growing
posticle? Yes, thank you forthe magic growing popsicle. Thank you for
the notes, but thank you forthe popsicle, because that's sho was a
great. See that was great. Why would you choose a pobstacle the thing
(14:05):
that melts the quickest. Popsicles aredelicious, I know, but it was
it was impossible to keep continuity. It was like he was done with popsicle.
It's possible. I can't argue that. I really can't argue that Adria.
That was beautiful, and you broughtup a lot of good points in
there too. That was really nice. Yeah, well done, well done.
(14:28):
Uh, let's just let's just getinto his monologue about all the porn
categories. Yeah, do you wantto? Because he does he does my
my favorite cagism where he where he'llsay a word and then stop and say
really quickly, but like in aweird way because he's like he goes atal
beads. Yes. So in thisclad, he's talking to the girl that
(14:56):
his daughter's forty five year old boyfriendthat's taking this um and right he is
definitely forty five. Yeah, yeah, And it's it's weird because I think
I think there's supposed to be aelement of potential racism in here where I
think Age kind of doesn't like thiskid because he's black, and so not
(15:18):
only does he have the problem withhis own kids, but he's also kind
of fixated on the fact that hisdaughter, who he now hates because of
this disease, is like dating thisblack man. And then he, you
know, the guy. The guycomes because he knows what's going on with
with parents, because he just killedhis own father and he's trying to save
(15:39):
his girl. His dad slice ownneck. He was like a bottle and
is like stabbing himself neck. Itwas why so here's um, here's the
clip they were talking about we needto talk, sir, oh do we
need to attack? And I thinkabout how things were in my days to
right, but now the world youkids are the things you've seen on the
(16:02):
internet. Mouth to dildo, dildoasked, asked to ask high brand anal
Bees things I always saw in magazineand that knows you here at the end
here throughout the film, when um, when they wanted to kill your kids,
thing kicks in. So it's great. I mean, it's a great
(16:22):
club. And I don't think Idon't think he's just liked for the kid
had anything to do with race.So you're inferring that. I think Cage
was going back to the fact thathe was just a horny motherfucker in high
school and he could get his handson and didn't want that to happen to
his daughter. Yeah, you mightbe right. I guess I was thinking
that it was a race thing.But I think you're right. I think
(16:45):
now that you say it, you'reright. It's a it's a midlife crisis
thing. Character could have been anyone, but he's he's so good and he
and he does all his little likeeven like in the beating, that's the
whole like he's coming out. He'shaving fun for all these like VOD movies
that we've been watching where he's justlike passive Cage with the occasional fun thing
(17:06):
like this is him going back tobeing unhinged, you know, and in
a role that perfectly before him.You know, it's it's it's Taylor made.
It's Brian Taylor made, made forthis in this role, uh,
you know, for for Cage. And oh, it's just so nice.
I really SRaw that we've been throughon the show. It's I know,
(17:29):
it's so good, and I justfeel like we need to talk about this
one scene. This is probably gonnabe just a bouncing around. Let's talk
about the favorite things we love fromthis movie thing more than because it's just
so chaotic and what but the onescene where Cage builds a pool table.
You watch him build an entire pooltable. It might be one of the
(17:51):
best scenes I think I've seen ina Cage movie today. It's great.
He builds an entire pool table, his wife, and he works so the
basement, get it, Yeah, the basement. He works so long to
get a level, finally gets alevel. His wife comes down. It's
kind of like, hey, wereyou gonna tell me that you were wanting
to buy a pool table? Andthen he just loses his mind and he
(18:12):
basically starts destroying the pool table andthen has I think it's about a three
minute monologue and it's so good,and I didn't I just took, you
know, I took the part wherehe destroys the pool table and then a
little bit from the monologue. Butplease go watch this movie. It is
It is an Oscar worthy monologue ofCage talking about losing um, you know,
(18:36):
his youth, and very well actedon him and Sma Blair who sits
down with him and starts talking abouther perspective as a woman and going through
her midlife prices that she is,and it's just it's such a good scene
and we haven't seen a good scenebetween actors and so fucking long on this
show. It's crazy. It's great. Yeah, you know, I so
(18:56):
I looked this up on Rotten Tomatoes. It has a seventy five credit score,
but a forty percent audience score. We're watching this and not liking this
movie very bizarre, you know.People. I was reading kind of reading
from the IMDb ones and most ofthem are six sata tin from people.
And I don't know what it isbecause I get that, and I know
(19:18):
we're kind of trailing off now fromfrom the clip. I get that,
like because it is it's lower budgetand it looks but it's not though it
was still an it's an expensive movieby by a season director, but like
it's it. It looks a littlecheaper, it looks a little weird,
but it's very stylized as part ofthat too, and it's it's like,
(19:38):
I don't know if people just don'tget it, or or if they just
don't understand like the what they're tryingto do here. But it's not even
that deep of a movie either. It's and if you're not looking for like
the underneath it all like the midlifecrisis and family drama, it's just a
blast. It's so it's so ridiculous, you know, And I don't know,
(19:59):
maybe the writing doesn't work for someof the people and they see it
as dumb, where we see itmore as like but it's it. They're
haven't it's it's it's interesting though,it's just so fun. Like I don't
know how you can watch this moviefrom a critical eye and say, you
know, just shut up, justenjoy a movie. Yeah, it's unbound
(20:21):
from reality. It's in its ownlittle existence and it's just it made its
own rules and it's great and ittakes up no time. It jumps in,
does its thing, and it endsand it's like this was great,
but yeah, let's let's shut soyeah, so here's here's that clip.
Yeah, you put your right footin, you take your right foot out,
(20:48):
fucking it all out right, future, everything in the world will look
forward to. I mean I wasgonna grab the world by the balls and
square boy, God damn it,I remember that kid. I used to
be like with four fucking minutes ago, my feet fairly chested round back then,
my kill ratio was nine out ofChanna was one hundred percent sex plant
on his ass, fat fall cottagecheese, sucking the blue bunt butter waistline
(21:14):
with hair coming out of my earsmy nose. I love that scene because
he so clearly just starts improvising, and I'm pretty sure the whole thing is
improvised, talking about how fat heis, and he's like blue butter coming
in my ears. Yeah, andthat's after singing the whole hokey pokey,
(21:37):
which we just got the end ofright footing right, and it's just to
like someone Blair who's who just says, hey, you know, why don't
you tell me about a pool table? Ye huh, yeah, it's so
good. It's a family room becauseit's a place for the pins and then
(21:59):
the place with the adults you don'teven like fool yes, and he just
smashes the whole thing. He justbuilt this table. It's great. And
then like also, like who buildstheir own pool table? How cool?
And the thing yeah, and it'sgreat, it's great. Yeah. Um.
(22:25):
I think an underrated part of thismovie and an underrated kind of scary
thing in it is that all thisthis affects all parents, not parents with
young kids. So at the endof the movie, so parents show up
and try to kill him, whenwhen the mom just maces him in the
face. Oh that was so good. Well, and this is why this
(22:45):
is where like the writing is goodbecause the whole idea from the beginning of
the movie with the family when they'resetting them up and all the tension and
the mom and the daughter stop gettingalong because the daughter is a teenager and
you know, being annoying, butthe mom's also being overbearing, and Hage
is sick of his son leaving toysall around and messing with the stuff and
the car and all that. Andyou just see this family is already having
(23:06):
issues, but they're trying to keepit together. And they're like, Hey,
your grandparents are coming over tonight. We're having a family dinner. You
can't go out with your boyfriend. You know, we ought to be here
tonight, and the force of doarslike, no, I don't want to
be the grandparents, you know. But they set it up right in the
beginning and you totally forget. Butby the time an hour later, whenever
you get there and they finally getto the point where they're about to kill
the kids, and then you hearthe doorbell ring and it's Cage's parents and
(23:30):
they Mason and trying to kill him, and it becomes Cage's parents fighting him
while he's trying to fight, likefight his kids and like, and the
best part two is it shows likeit's not just like it's it's purely genetics.
Because the ma, Selma Blair,is talking to the grandma and they
they are not trying to kill SelmaBlair. They're just trying to kill a
Cage because he's their son, youknow, and and she's just like,
(23:51):
don't kill him. They're like, sorry, honey, but we have to.
Also, you're a hord I loveI love too that scene where,
like you said, they're just aboutto kill the kids and the doorbell rings
and you just see they like snapout of it for long enough to just
turn and look and talk, youknow, talk through Oh shit, your
parents were coming for dinner. Andit's I love this movie, man,
(24:15):
I can't say it enough. Ijust absolutely love this movie. And the
grandpa does the same thing. He's, you know, he's about to like
he's trying to kill Cage, andthen he turns to see the kids.
He's like, you motherfucker. Heykids, you know they're looking and shock,
you know, like their their dad'sbeen chasing around the house. But
yeah, it's it's just it's ablast, and they they nailed it.
(24:37):
I don't know. The movie wasmaybe maybe one day it'll be a bigger
cult hit. Or something. Ihope it finds an all. I hope
so it deserves it. I wantto go see this at like a midnight
movie, you know a thing. You know, it's been so much fun
to just shout the lines out atand and just you know, not there's
no singing, but you know whatI mean, sing along too. Like
it's just such a experience. I'dloved experiences with more people who love this
(25:02):
movie, you know, Um Ido. I do have one gripe with
the movie. If we could talkabout it for a second. It really
kind of broke my brain and Ijust spent about ten minutes once the movie
was done talking about what this oneseem so to set it up, once
cages parents show up, the twoyounger kids then escape Nick Cage and some
(25:27):
of the Blair's characters and hide inthe basement. Um, and then those
two have the great idea to umtry to gas them out of the basement.
Yeah, you know. They sticka hose up to the gas line
and they put it through the basementwindow and they're trying to gas them out.
(25:48):
Well, anyway, the kids figureout a way that they can get
back as the parents, and thisis what they do they set up some
matches, which, by the way, wouldn't have lit. But it's it's
a little lone. I accepted that, and I liked it. What I
didn't accept was the fact that theyfound a vent to crawl out of.
And when they get out of thebasement, they get into the vent and
(26:11):
they crawl and they end up inthe attic. Yeow, did they just
crawl straight? Acrawl vertical? Yes, completely vertical up to the attic.
I don't understand why that. Spidersdo it, squirrels do it? You
know? You know that that brokemy brain, That absolutely broken. It
(26:32):
is weird. Yeah. Well, and also I just feel like the whole
house would have blown up too.Well also that yeah about it. It's
like, oh, it was thevent right right. The event got me
too. That was my line.Return of the goop that they crawled in
(26:52):
through an air duct return, Andyeah, I understand why it breaks your
brain because that's not how how airsystems work. First of all, the
return was in the basement, whichdoesn't make any sense. But the return
is where um, this system ispulling air into right, So first of
all, if there's a return inthe basement, then they're getting fresh air
(27:15):
and they're not going to get gassedout. But yes, number two return
there, and it shouldn't be inthe basement. The return should to be
in the main part of the house. And you're right, there would not
be a human sized duff that goesfrom basement to attic. It's just it
(27:36):
doesn't how do you go up there? And then how do you get up
pressure against the sides of the walls, climbing up the shafts. Yeah,
but we're talking about a fifteen yearold and an eight year old boy and
allegedly allegedly in there, and they'reshimmying their way out. All right.
(27:57):
I mean it broke my brain up. I mean, crazier things happen.
The design does not play. Butbut Brian Taylor, you got got the
Wickerman got you, we got youbroke your Are you gonna are you gonna
put this on imdd? I might? I might have to or whatever on
(28:18):
the the popsicle is, Yeah, that's the first there. But I liked
to when they I was so happy. I was a friend of my dove.
Oh you got it, you gotit. When they do those flashbacks
too, I like that even preyou know, this hysteria that's happening like
just you know, years before, like Cage is still like when they're eating
(28:42):
the popsicle, he is still justlike, but don't fuck with my car,
you know at the time, likeit's five year old, and like
like he's very aggressive to them allthe way through, you know what,
you would just don't understands that werein my face when I drove this car.
Okay, Yeah, he's like talkingabout sweet, sweet pussy and like,
(29:02):
what's going on here? Boys? It's great. One Cage is like
watching porn at work. You know, he's just he's just going through it,
you know. Okay, wait,so I was confused about that.
Was he watching porn or was hedreaming about that time in the car,
because when it cuts to his screen, there's work on the screen. Well,
(29:22):
well, I I paused it onthe monitor because you only see the
monitor for like at an angle fora second. But all along the like
I think he had maybe like workstuff on one window, but all along
the left side was like all theseporn categories, which is when he was
reading. Kind of later when hedoes his great I thought he was bleeping
and somebody was having sex in likethe next office like secret and imply they
(29:53):
do kind of imply that he's havingan affair with his secretary. I think,
so at least there's there's something there. It's just for sec Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, it's so goodand and the editing is so perfect too,
um because it's just it's it's it'sso high octane and cut dext next,
next, next, and and itjust works. And even stuff like
(30:14):
that where it's like, oh,was he having sex with the secretary?
Was that someone else? Was hewatching? Poor? It doesn't matter,
like it's it's just like a didyou kind of feel the hysteria? They
feel the overcrowding sensation and like you'rejust like it's just an overwhelm. It's
it's a sensory overload, you know. And you you said it Beforehank.
But the I think the flashbacks justwork so well. Oh yeah. And
they they do the same thing withthe flashbacks where it's like it kind of
(30:38):
your brain just it takes a minuteto like even figure out what's going on,
but it just it just works great. Yeah, they they they nailed
it, and and it's one ofmy favorite kinds of movies because it's just
entertainment for entertainment's sake, you know, And there's there's some light messaging in
there about what it's like being afamily and getting older and intentions, and
it's there, which also makes betterbecause it's not just like nothing. There's
(31:00):
there's a chord to this that's interesting, but as a whole, it's just
entertainment. You know, it's nottrying to be some big, great Oscar
you know thing. It's just afun fucking movie. You know. It's
like, this is what movies canbe and and often should be. And
it's just wasn't it hit though?You know, didn't didn't? I mean
(31:21):
it was it was limited releases intheaters, so you know, it wasn't
nation wide or anything, so itwasn't gonna make a lot of money.
I think it was like a fourmillion dollar budget and grossed like two hundred
and fifty thousand dollars, but ina very limited theater sense. I don't
know how it did on home butI mean I came out, Yeah,
yeah, I've got on Blu ray. I I support the movie. You
(31:44):
know, it's great. Um,how many times have y'all teaming? I
think this was my third time seethis was three year by far the time
I enjoyed it the most. Though. Yeah, I mean I really liked
it the first two times, butI think the this was a really fun
time too, because I watched itwith Steph and she was so into it.
(32:06):
Yeah, and like I mean,I'm not joking. When we one
of us would look at the otherperson, our mouths were just wide open
and like eyes bulging. We couldn'teven believe what we were watching on screen.
So, um, yeah, Ithink this was my most enjoyable time.
Had you seen it before A jYeah, I think I thought when
it came out, and remember enjoyingit a lot and realizing like, oh,
(32:34):
this is the perfect movie to startNicholas Cage, you know, and
you don't even have to wait fora freak out, like yeah, you
get it straight up the whole time. Um, It's like it's like an
IV link of of gauge. It'sjust dripping in, you know, like
the whole movie. Well, youknow, and it was refreshing to see
(32:54):
him not know how to food becausethat was something we talked about a lot.
And it's while, yeah, nowhe's like all grown up Cage and
blah blah, blah, But like, do you remember what I'm talking about?
It was early in the movie.Yeah, I do, because the
problem is I can't remember the specificthing because the scene was the most chaotic
(33:17):
breakfast scene I've ever seen. Likethey're having the conversation that was a lot
of scenes in there. They're havingthe conversation about dinner with the Gray James.
That was more scenes than a FalloutBoy concert. Nice. Nice dude,
I like that. Yeah, becausea j that's what you're talking about,
right, is that breakfast? Um? Part of the movie. No,
(33:42):
I was actually thinking about when hegets into his car and find like
a mostly eaten something in at andit's like like you think he's going to
throw it out because it's just beencooking in the sun or something. And
then he like goes in takes likea pinch of whatever it was beef jerky
(34:04):
or stroking offer, who knows what, and there's still food in the bag.
He takes one little bite and thenjust chucks it over his shoulder in
the car. That you value somuch? Um. Yeah. Also I
want to shout out to them thescore. I love the music and I
(34:24):
love the whole like it's it's it'slike I love the glitching like sound effect
that they used throughout where it's justlike it's like when you get a high
ringing in your yeah, yeah, and it just it'll just and then silence
and then like a yeah you know, and you just you you just again,
(34:45):
sensory overload. It does such agood job at like making you feel
what they're feeling and and and thishigh octane environment and it's great. I
couldn't find the composer on IMDb.I don't know what happened. I don't
know what Williams wasn't it, Yes, John Williams. There was a right
before seven. There was an interestingbalance between traditional horror score and completely out
(35:16):
of left field horror score. Youknow, like sometimes it was like super
spooky, intense and ominous and it'slike whoa. And sometimes it was like
like nineteen forties like box swing music. Yeah, during that same kind of
tense moment, so like the tensionis building, but it's like you would
(35:38):
have thought to beat that movie. And I loved it. I loved both
parts of it equally. Yeah, and they nailed it. One other one
other anomaly in this movie. Imean, I do I just think the
ages were off for so many ofthese people. But I saw it before.
My boyfriend looks old as shit andhe's taken the PSAT. He did
(36:01):
aja at first and then later inthe movie, I felt like he looked
kind of normal age. But yeah, I didn't think he was very old.
I don't know what you're doing.Really, I thought he looked old
when he was sitting there taking thePSAT. I thought he looked old as
shit. But regardless, Well,I was stressing out about the PSAT you're
(36:21):
at and it's hard, you know, it's um so you gotta he said,
he did a lot of it's apractice test. Yeah, well I
love I love in that in thatsequence where like, um, yeah,
it's all these it's all these kids, you know, taking the taking the
test in there in the you know, classic auditorium, you know, spaced
out seating and all that, andyou start to see all these parents and
(36:42):
just gathering, you know, justlike like fucking hungry, like goddamn,
just like it's so creditors, youknow, all standing and staring and like
you know, whenever he brings hisuh, you know, he breaks his
pencil and so he walks up tohave a new pencil from the teacher and
she's just kind of off hands. She's like, I don't know what all
these you know, all these parentsare doing here, but boy, they
really they really want to get theirkids back. Huh. And it's before
(37:04):
we know like what's really going onand all that, But you just see
this like feral primal, like they'rejust waiting and it's great where you it
also quickly establishes the rules of likethey're only going to get their kids because
he finishes his test early, turnsit in and then walks out and like
opens the door, just slides betweeneveryone else, you know, and like
this is weird. You know. What I didn't really get was right after
(37:28):
that scene, or I guess goingconcurrently with that scene at the high school,
when they basically all of the parentsshow up to the high school to
get their kids, and the teachersseem to realize what's going on, because
I think the first kid that gotcalled to the office probably went out and
his parents just murdered him, andthey're like, oh shit, we can't,
(37:49):
like but then they still bring allof the kids right up to the
fence where the parents are and thenjust block them off. With with cops.
Why would they bring them there.I'm gonna just chalk it up to
like it's the fire drill protocols orwhatever it does, you know, I
don't know. Yeah, I thinkthe kids went up to see what was
happening with the crowd of parents. No, remember they're getting evacuated and funneled
(38:15):
out of school. Yeah, becausethe fire, like the drill, the
alarm was going then, Like yousee all of the parents screaming over there,
like that's naturally where I think theycome, but I don't know why
they're with Like it goes, itgoes zero to one hundred very quickly,
and and and it's it's just like, all right, now we had to
(38:35):
get this started sort of thing, which our parents. Well, that's why
I kept thinking too. I waslike, I guess of these other people
on their own, Yeah yeah,um. But it's great though, because
that's the first time well we we'dseen in the beginning of the movie one
of the parents, like a randomparent killed their kid and kind of set
things up before we cut to ourfamily. You see a little bits of
(38:57):
it here and there, but thisis the first time you really see in
public, like what's going on becauseyeah, the teachers are like trying to
keep the kids from the parents. There's a fence dividing them, you know,
police are there, uh and thenthis, you know, and all
the parents are like one of theone of the moms is like, here,
come here, my, my,my, my little Tony, you
know, come here, come here, and like and this one kids like
and he just runs out to hismom and he hops the fence and the
(39:20):
second he's over the fence, shejust whips out her car keys and fucking
stabs the kid. You know.I mean some of these still great brutal.
Yeah, it's awesome. They gofor it. They're killing kids,
yeah, which is great. Helook like a greater, you know,
and like it's great. He's overthe fence and like the police are pulling
like his back legs and the mom'spulling like his his hands and he's screaming,
(39:42):
you know. And I was waitingfor him to just be ripped at
half views from the audience because there'stoo many people that don't have a sense
of humor, like saw this wasgonna be a wholesome family movie. Mom
and dad and they were just absolutelydiscussed it, you know, like if
my mom watched this movie, shewould absolutely abort it. Yes, same
(40:07):
with I mean there was times wherethey were just bludgeoning kids to death and
I was in tears, crying, laughing, it was so funny. Yeah,
and then and then the grandparents comein and just steal the shows.
You got like little kid running awayfrom like mangles Cage, and Cage is
(40:30):
like diving through this car trying tokill his son, and his father comes
up behind him and grabs him bythe ankle and just right in the hamm
string. Oh my godson, youknow who most people know is Bishop from
Aliens and and and a bunch ofstuff. And it probably would have been
(40:54):
better if it was Bob Barker thatthat would that would have been. But
throughout the trip, do you knowBob Barker grumbles and the roars and the
gurgles and the I mean, justa diverse array, Like I would like
(41:15):
to go back and clip just likea sound bite for Barker. I really
know her. Nice. Yeah,I actually made a just pooped all over
it. But yeah, I lovethis movie. It's great. I totally
(41:39):
agree with what you're saying. It'swhen I was clipping audio and I do
have two other like eight second clipsI want to play, but I was
thinking, man if I could justgo back and just clip each individual or
groan or like they're all so good, let me let me play these two
clips. The first one is himtry trying to get into the door,
(42:05):
so they're basically the theme of thetrickery that the parents are trying to pull
is the mom is really good atkeeping it together to try to get the
two kids either open the door orcome over to them or whatever, and
Cages can only hold it together forthirty seconds out of time before he just
breaks. So that's what you'll hearin this clip. And then the next
(42:29):
one is the sauce all clip Imentioned earlier, which he says with fruit
loops all over his face, hereyou go, mother, motherfuckers, you're
going to open this mother sa sauce. Oh and that's what I love it,
(43:10):
Like h hysteria or not. Cagetalks to his children like like he's
he's at a fight with a strangerto bar motherfuckers. You know, it's
like it's an eight year old son, you know. Open star so good.
But the waves too, because likeoh yeah in misclean all this right,
(43:36):
and then like he gets blown upright because they're filling the basement with
propane. They escape up the attict, they plants this little match trick and
cage finally solves. The door opensit and it light is ignites and just
blows up in his face. Youthink he's dead, but he's not dead.
And he comes back and like, dude, he's getting rest. I
(44:00):
mean he's been so many times. Some of Blair got shot and then the
daughter's like like poking and like butthen like in the middle of this,
he like comes down and hey,I wrote who because he has this little
(44:21):
vampires kids moment, you know, like where he's just totally down, all
the way down, and he's justlike, oh my god. I mean
you can tell, like we weresaying at the beginning of the show,
Um James, you were saying that, like he said that this is his
(44:43):
favorite movie he did in like tenyears, you know, and like you
can see why because like he's it'sit's it's it's letting him do his thing
again, you know. And thisis sort of to the beginning of UM.
This is like like kind of thethere was like Army of One a
little bit and now This is kindof the um comeback of Cage and going
(45:04):
one of these indie movies and gettingback out there in the world again and
coming out of his bankruptcy and startedto actually got to find movies that he
wants to do. I have toimagine the director casting, you know,
person for Mandy watched this movie,I'm sure was like, he would be
perfect, and that's our guy.Yeah, you know, no doubt.
(45:24):
But didn't didn't that come out shortly? Darn it came out? Yeah,
I think we're not too far,like a year later, basically a full
year later. Yeah, but butI know that one was shot and done
pretty quickly. But you might beright. I mean, then he might
have just already been cast for both. Yeah, there's not there's not a
(45:45):
ton of like interesting or really anylike gooser gaffs that are written down.
Um, and we already talked aboutthe popsicle one, but there is this
one that kind of made me laugh. This one goof was that the hinges
on the door to the basement wereon the outside on the Cage and Blair
side of the door, and sothey could have very easily just unscrewed the
(46:07):
door, which which I kind alot. I mean, yeah, kind
of the idea. They're just solike, they're so aggressive they all they
can think is we're just gonna breakthis fucking door down, you know,
which that was a very I feellike I feel like they could have easily
just kicked the door down or something. You know, I don't know if
it was like a reinforces the strongdoor. Yeah's ear door, man.
(46:34):
I am a doorman. I installeddoors, I picked stores. James,
you bring up an absolutely excellent point. Uh, I hadn't even thought of
that, but yeah, the waythat the door is built can easily be
kicked down or maneuvered or uh appso the options get yeah. Yeah,
(47:01):
And I actually just want to,you know, keep talking about her.
I want to big shout out toSma Blair in this because she's the perfect
like like um partner four cage andboth in acting and in the movie.
She nails it all the way throughas the more like quieter emotional like person
but also just as batshit crazy andjust's over all of this, you know.
(47:22):
Um, And so when you haveand a professional actor too, so
when you have these two people togetherwith what they're doing. I love the
scene when they are like like puttingthe natural the gas line, you know,
into the basement, and like they'vealso been distant from each other,
and this is like Cage is liketrying to like reconnect with her like through
this, and she's like, allright, you know what, this is
what we're gonna do. And she'slike, we're gonna put this here,
(47:44):
and like, you know, shekind of takes charge and starts like setting
everything up in the whole time,Cage, it's just like I love you,
honey, you know, and she'sjust like it's it's great everything about
it. Yeah, And there's reallylike there's not much else to the movie.
It's like it's it's so they're they'rehaving a wild breakfast. You establish
(48:05):
all the characters. Mom drops themoff at school, you know, kids
stays at home. School goes crazy. We see what's happening. They're back
at the house, Shit goes crazythere, grandparents show up. They they
run over the grandparents for the car. Uh and then it ends in the
basement and like that's it. That'sthe whole movie. It is so small
and in the best way, andand and just they they use every minute
(48:27):
that they that they have. It'sa very efficient movie too, and I
think we should keep this an efficientpodcast and yeah, and wrap it up.
I feel like we've it's not toomuch more than just but I just
want people to watch this movie.I want to watch it again. All
right, it's great? Yeah?Um so any other any other notes you
get? James E Age? Waitthen, uh yeah, let's let's go
(48:53):
into uh well, or were thereany more goofs, scaffs, gools,
not a ghoul to be found?Um? No, you know what,
I think I'm done just promoting thereally annoying people that I find on the
goofs and gaffs. So I'm noteven going to promote them. Just mark
(49:13):
stupid stupid things about seat belts andwhere the car is parked and just shit
I don't care about. So let'sskip the rest of that. Yeah all
right, Well, in that case, let's move into a little segment I
like to call final thoughts in ratings. In ratings, James, Jimmy,
(49:39):
my boy, Saint Jimmy, it'sto me, what are your final thoughts?
And you're rating? Man? Thismovie is is just nearly flawless.
I really don't have a gripe withthis movie. I'm not going to give
it a hundred because face offs ahundred for me, and it's just not
(50:00):
face off. But it's it's sawsall, it's it saves all. Um.
But it's so good. I mean, just watch this movie. It
is an absolute delight. Um,I'll give it a ninety eight. I
love this movie. Hell yeah, hell yeah, brother, um quick,
(50:22):
it's a sainct and to the point, just like the film. Uh a
j what do you findal thoughts andmaybe your rating too, well, definitely
give us your rating. We needthat. Yeah, I loved I loved
this movie. Uh loved it lasttime I watched it. It's it's been
a while, it's been a fewyears, but just an absolute delight.
(50:45):
I don't know if our ratings areskewed coming out of the run of movies
we just did. True, itwas definitely like a spectacular jump back into
what this pot cast could and shouldbe about, you know, like,
uh, we're we're taking it backto the craziness, to the expressionism,
(51:09):
to the hooting and the hollering. And yeah, I think it's obvious that
there's no reason to over talk aboutthis movie. There's a reason that we
didn't. None of us took manynotes. It was just like it's a
wild ride, sit down, strappingand have fun, damn right, and
(51:37):
what I'm gonna rate this a ninetysix? Okay, okay, um.
This is the first movie in along time on the show that I didn't
paulish to look at how much timeis left, which says a lot.
Uh. It's a blast. It'sit's also something it's kind of fun to
(51:59):
see. It is. It's abit of a you can make a metaphor
out of it with Cage's career too, of just like you know, in
the early days of the movies thatwe watch, Like in the movie,
he's talking about, you know,I used to be young and get ash,
so do this and do that, and like I just think back on
the early days of our show andall of his original movies and just how
much younger he was and all thestuff that he was doing, and you
(52:19):
kind of and then now you we'vebeen watching all this crap of him just
like doing work and getting bills paidand shit like that, and it's like,
all right, this is the returnof our king, you know,
like this is our guy, andhe's back and he's always been there,
you know, but now if youfinally got a role that that really suits
him and he's back at it again, he still has it. You know.
Um love this movie. It's avery unique movie as well, which
(52:40):
I appreciate a lot, and uh, I love the director a lot,
and so yeah, I give thislike, uh, I'm gonna say like
also, I'm gonna say in ninetyI'm gonna say ninty five nenty five out
a hundo cages because and I willsay, it's not like a it's not
a it's not a you know,perfectly crafted film by any means. It's
(53:00):
just it's a blast. Yeah. You know. It was like like recently
I saw the Dungeons and Dragons movieand that movie was really indulging and just
like knowing what it is and havinga good time. And when you can
feel the energy of filmmakers just enjoyingwhat they're doing, it makes all the
difference. I'm also not miserable talkingabout it, you know, happy to
(53:21):
be talking about So yeah, ninetyfive love this movie. I would not
recommend it to kids because it's allabout kitting, killed, killing kids,
but I would recommend it to adults. Commended to Grandma's I'm staying my grandma
and I almost watched this one withher. Oh I'm glad I didn't.
I would say she probably would nothave enjoyed. I would recommend it to
(53:43):
grandmother's personally, especially Florida grandmothers.Yeah, but yeah, yeah, Can
I tell a real quick grandma's story. It's something I've never said on air
before, but my favorite stories aboutmy late grandmother. So, my mom's
mom, very prim and opera woman. Um. I don't know if you
ever met her a j or rememberher, but yeah, I know you
(54:06):
probably met her, but I've mether more times than I met a different
grandma. That's my dad's mom.But yeah, my mom's mom very very
like, like I said, veryvery proper woman. You know how to
had a glass of brandy each eveningand played, um, what's the old
lady game? Hearts? The game? Um, no bridge? She played
(54:28):
bridge all the time. She wentto go see She went to go see
Borat by herself in theaters and itwas her and like twenty women in front
of her from the Purple Hats Clubor whatever that society is that those old
ladies join, and um, shesaid, she was laughing so hard and
if you knew my grandma, shehad like the loudest, funniest laugh ever
(54:52):
and yes, yeah, yeah, exactly, and it just like never it
just you know, it got everyonelaughing. But she said all the women
got up to leave, and afew of them turned around and just said,
shame on you, shame on you. I have a feeling she would
have loved this movie as well.Yeah, that's great, thank you for
indulging me. Shame on them, you know, yes, that shame on
(55:17):
them. Absolutely. Um, well, what is our composite score? Yeah,
so you gave it a ninety five, a j ninety six. I
gave it a ninety eight. Wehave a new movie in the top five.
Boys, Hey, this was aninety six, so our top five
it stands right now. Vampires KissedOn one hundred thirty three composite score,
(55:38):
Adaptation ninety eight, Face Off ninetyseven, Mom and Dad ninety six,
the little movie I could. Whowould have thought, you know? And
I will say to thank kick Assby the way, Yeah, I kind
of wanted to mention my final thoughtsand forgot, But this is I think
the third time I've seen this film, And like you were saying, James,
like This is definitely my favorite timewatching it because everyone in the first
(56:00):
time I saw it was like, this is weird, but I like it.
And the second time I loved it, and I was like, I'm
gonna buy the Blu ray. Andthis time I really love it, and
so like I only like it moreand that's a very good sign. Yeah,
it's like Vampire's Kiss. Yeah,it just it ages. Well,
yeah, it just gets better aswell. Cage as well. And that's
our show. Everyone. Uh,well that's my mom and dad. It's
(56:24):
awesome. We all love it.What trash are we watching next week?
Yeah, we're hold on, holdon. But before we get into the
next week, while we're still talkingabout top five, I saw recently on
the interwebs Nicolas Cage on a talkshow recently. So, yeah, last
(56:51):
couple of years. Oh did yousee this where he gives his top five?
Oh no, no, no,sorry, I thought he was on
sixty minutes last week. I thoughtyou were going to reference that. No
I haven't. I didn't see that. Okay, So he was asked what
are his favorite top five movies thathe made? So I'm wondering if you
guys, can I can guess someof these. So I think Vampire's Kisses
(57:14):
on there because I've heard him talkabout it glowingly before base Off has got
to be on there. I wouldsay neither of those movies are really I
would say Adaptation and Leaving Las Vegas, either of those. Neither of those
movies are really raising Arizona time tokill? No Captain, whoever the Fox's
(57:39):
man really handle Moonstruck? Does hehave an affinity for Moonstruck? Does not?
All right, go give him tous? Is it guarding test?
Coming in at number five? IsJoe what? Okay? Fairly Joe?
(58:02):
Number four was bad, lieutenant?Okay? That that which was on the
verge of the guess is there?Number three? I don't think you'd ever
for guess which, but it wasbringing out the dead o guess working with
and I think in in the cliffsee him really talk about the director that
(58:27):
he was working with, one ofher Zog and marn Crssese, and I
don't know who directed the rest ofthem, but yeah, I guess it
was the directors you really liked workingwith. Number two is brings us to
the movie we're gonna watch next week, Mandy, Not the movie we're gonna
(58:49):
we're not watching, not the moviewe're gonna watch. I wish we were
watching next. Oh I thought thatthat was next on the list. Anyway,
what's the number two, Sandy numberone? I will say it's it's
one of his newer movies come outin the last two three years. Unbearable
(59:10):
Weight, Pig Pig nice. Yeah, that makes sense, Yeah, that
makes sense. Leave it to Cage. Should have a fucking ridiculous little ridicule.
Yeah that's insane. Um, well, thank you for that, Age.
I'd like to actually watch that clip. So if he's interesting, if
(59:31):
you could send it to us,so I'd be wonderful. Um in Cage,
we still have an open open seatfor you. Yes, yeah,
yeah, we are looking for afourth yeah yeah, yeah, and we'd
love it to be Nick Cage. And uh yeah, we are not watching
Mandy next week. Unfortunately, we'rewatching a movie I've never heard of.
(59:52):
It looks like dog shit. Um, I'm not looking forward to it.
It's called The Humanity Bureau. It'sa stopian thrillers set in the year twenty
thirty, which actually isn't that faroff. That sees the world. Yeah,
yeah, even when this came outit's like thirteen years away. Um,
but it sees the world in apermanent state of economic recession and facing
(01:00:15):
serious environmental problems as a result ofglobal warming warming. This movie is gonna
suck, you know. This isone of those posters that you look at
you just know. Also it saysthe Humanity Bureau Escape from New America sick.
Well America can't wait for that.Um it's an hour and a half.
(01:00:39):
So that's good. Yeah, atleast there's that's like that. Yeah,
good, which is actually it's evenlonger than Mount Mom and Dad.
Mom and Dad's clean like our twentyeight you know. It's yeah, right
up my alley. I loved it. If you have Amazon primates on that,
So at least there's that as well. I guess I got up.
