(00:01):
Hi, I'm Wendy Lois Sloan, and this is What's Up with Wendy's podcast.
I just wanted to tell you alittle bit about myself. I began
my career in New York City asa television producer for talk show legends Phil
Donahue and Heraldo Rivera, and forthe last decade, I've used these experiences
to create my unique style in interviewinghundreds of a list celebrities, newsmakers,
(00:22):
comedians, musicians, reality stars, fitness and nutrition experts, best selling authors,
and so much more. So.I hope you enjoy this wide variety
on my podcast. I hope you'llshare and subscribe, and again, thanks
for tuning in. Welcome to What'sUp with Wendy. Are you ready to
discover the next big music superband?Banded is a first of its kind music
(00:45):
competition series that takes you behind thescenes of the music's industry and lets you
witness the birth of the next biggenerate, next big music band. Joining
us Brandon Jenner, host of Banded, and Mark Shulman, Pink's former drummer
and Banded judge. Thank you bothfor joining me. Thank you for having
us. Wenday, Thanks any Greatto meet you. Great to meet you
too. Okay, So why isthis the right time to do this?
(01:07):
Well, any time is a goodtime for a show like this. I
mean music. Music is something thathas transcended many generations, many eras.
You know, it's been it's beenaround for a long time. It's a
way for people to express themselves,to kind of push against, you know,
like society in a way when needed. And this show really is about
(01:32):
original music. It's about the song. We took twenty five musicians from all
around the world and we made upfive bands of five musicians and they competed
with original music every single week.So they had to write and record a
song, well write and then performthat song, and then the winner of
each week gets to go into thestudio and record and release that song.
(01:55):
And then of course at the endof the show, one of these bands
gets a record contract. So thisshow really is all about original music.
It's about the song, which hasalways been the thing that has fueled the
music industry since the beginning of time. Oh my god, so true.
This is so exciting, you guys, and judges will also include Rock and
Roll Hall of Famers, Music LegendGrammy Winners. Yes. Absolutely. We
(02:17):
have DJ Swivel, who is anamazing producer, songwriter and his own right
work with Beyonce, worked with theChain Smokers. Then we have Diarra,
who's a model, she's a singer, she's a singer, songwriter, she
performed with an international band that didArenas. And very interesting juxtaposition between the
(02:39):
judges because you have me, I'msort of the optimistic, sort of positive
guy, but very critical because Ihave a lot of music industry experience.
Have DJ Swivell, who's even morecritical and a little more abrasive. And
then you have Dara who's very orientedtoward the visual and very oriented towards the
(03:00):
performance. And sometimes we got alongbeautifully, sometimes we butted heads. This
is reality TV, right. Sogreat about this experience is we do not
get to see the bands until theaudience does, right, so we get
that fresh perspective they come on stage. Now, imagine this, So I'm
(03:20):
a musician. I've grown up inband's my entire life. These musicians are
thrown together in bands most of themhave never met. They're thrown together right
away. They have one week. They are charged with writing a specific song
and a specific style, the banger, power ballad, anthem, novelty,
(03:42):
and they write a song with aworld class producer, songwriter, coach,
and they are getting to know eachother because they're fresh. They're writing a
song, they're staging a song. They're going on the stage performing it at
the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville in frontof a live audience every week. To
(04:08):
me, that is profound. WhenI rehearse with Pink or Stevie Nicks or
Billy Gian, we had five weeksto rehearse songs we already knew. This
is an amazing accomplishment. I cannottell you how profound this is. If
I wasn't on this show, Iwould watch it because I would be confounded
by the fact that they could actuallydo it. And you see their evolution.
(04:30):
It's so wonderful. No band getstaken off. They get to stay
on the show every week. Sothey're competing every week, and one band
wins every week, and one bandgets to record a song every week.
But at the end there's a grandprize winner. They get a major recording
contract, and we don't know thewinners. The winners are locked up in
(04:51):
an oscar style envelope and we're notgoing to find out and they're not going
to find out until the last episode. So this is so engaging, so
intriguing, interesting drama, interesting, amazing growth and what a story and what
an evolution from the other music shows. Because you talked about is it time
(05:13):
for this show? Well, yeah, The Voice American Idol, they have
fingers that are singing cover tunes. These are bands of five people just trying
to get along, writing music, trying to figure each other out, trying
to become a family, and thencheering each other on. It's a profound
experience. By gosh, really,I have to say, Mark, Okay,
(05:33):
it's the Pink's former drama. Andobviously you're you're so well known for
your energy and your excitement over this. Just listening to you, you know,
I want to tune in forget abouteverything else. And also the fact
that you guys, all all youjudges are so you know, you have
your own different person. That's whatmakes it even more exciting and fun to
(05:53):
watch too. Absolutely, it wasfun for me to watch you guys butt
heads. It was its very funny, very exciting. Well, sometimes we
were totally resonant. In other timesit was like bam bam, bam bam.
But again, this is reality. This is not scripted. They talk
about reality television most of its scripted. This is not scripted. And you
(06:15):
know brand and we also get totalk to Brandon like it's kind of funny.
We have our little banter, sowe're talking to each other in between
acts and we're having fun. AndBrandon performs. He's an amazing singer,
songwriter artist himself. So one ofthe highlights was watching Brandon's performance. And
Wendy Starlin, who's as the bandStarlin, She's an amazing singer songwriter herself.
(06:36):
She performs, and you get tosee the evolution of some of these
bands, and it's interesting when youwatch when people get to know who they're
going to be in bands with.As an example, Honeysuckle Rose, you
had two lead singers, you know, Chris and Ali, And when Chris
(06:57):
was told he was going to bein a band, Ali and he was
going to be a dual lead singerand head only leads sang It's once himself.
You could see his face just gooh. And then the first few
episodes they were butting heads and Ieven had a conversation with Ali off stage.
She wanted to quit, she wasso unhappy. Then they decided,
oh my gosh, we can beresident, we can work together, and
(07:19):
then magic him soon and then theystarted writing some profoundly amazing songs. So
the evolution is astounding. And watchingthat band Starlin, oh my gosh,
they became so world class even withtheir performance, right. And what about
the experience with Jacqueline and her dad, like her father you tell that story
(07:44):
great? Yeah, that that wasan amazing moment. Jacqueline the singer of
Starlin, her dad was in theaudience and we've got pyrotechnics on the stage.
She's up there at the at theend of the stage and had the
entire place on their feet. Andto see her dad kind of with tears
in his eyes looking at his daughters. I have a daughter myself. That
(08:05):
was a really special moment. SoI'm sure there's so many special moments and
inspiring musicians can learn from watching thisshow too. So much. We're going
to have so much fun watching youguys. Bandit is the supports of its
kind music competition series that takes youbehind the scenes of the music's industry and
let you witness the birth of thenext big music generation. Band So Brandon
Jenner. He is the host ofBandit and Mark Shulman, Pig's former drummer.
(08:30):
He's one of the judges. Andit's going to be so fun to
watch you guys. Thank you fortell us where everyone can tune in.
