What's Up with Wendy Welcome to thisepisode of What's Up with Wendy's podcast.
Ever want to take a bite outof a celebrity or anyone for that matter,
Well, today you're going to meetthe founder of Funny Face Bakery,
Sarah Silverman, who will share herstory of how this all began and what
happened when she sent a box ofcookies to Kim Kardashian, she also sent
it to me, So thank youfor sending me those cookies. I cannot

(01:29):
believe how awesome they were and howreal it looked. And I opened up
the box Sarah that you sent mewith my face on it, and I
was actually I grabbed it because Iwas on my way out. So I
took it to a restaurant and everyonewas like, oh my god, oh
my god, let me have oneof those. So welcome Sarah Silverman to
my show. Love it. Thankyou for having me. Oh my god.

(01:52):
I just love hearing stories like those. That's awesome. It was.
It was so but I opened it, I was like, but I had
seen some of the stuff that youhad done, but I was like,
oh my god, I can't imaginethe work that goes into that. But
we're going to talk about all that, but first I want to I want
you to take us back to Sarahbefore you started this journey. Tell us

(02:13):
a little bit about yourself. Iknow you were discouraged when you went to
college. You were studying fashion.Take us back to that. Yeah,
so, um, I wanted tobe a fashion designer. I took my
first fashion class and was partnered withsomeone and they were amazing, and I
thought, Okay, they're gonna makeit. I'm not, so I need
to find something else. Then Ireally wanted a boyfriend in college, and

(02:39):
all the street boys were in thefilm department. So I did screenwriting and
it's pretty good at it. Iliked it. I had one very discouraging
screenwriting teacher and one day he wasjust not impressed with something I wrote.
And that's the day I dropped outof college. Oh wow, okay,

(03:01):
so then what? So I movedback home to the city and I really
didn't have any friends in the city. Everyone was in college, so I
need to make friends. So Ithought, Okay, I'll work out a
bakery. It seems really cute. And I worked at this really cute bakery

(03:21):
on the Upper east Side called TwoLittle Redheads, and I had the best
time of my life. I lovemy coworkers. I even had my first
cute boyfriend, and I just lovedeverything about working out a bakery. I
can't even imagine walking into a bakeryand working there on a regular basis and

(03:43):
smelling all that delicious stuff. Howdid you control yourself? Oh, it's
actually really amazing. After two weeks, you cannot smell anything. Like every
time someone walks into the bakery, they're like, oh my god, it's
amazing, and I really cannot smellanything. It's so crazy. That is
crazy. Okay, so you wereactually on a mission, I read to

(04:05):
create the perfect cupcake. I was. Yeah, So I always wanted to
be an entrepreneur, so I wantedto open up a bakery, and I
wanted to open up a cupcake bakery. And it was kind of gonna be
the Chipotle or Sweet Greens of cupcakes, or you pick the cupcake flavor,

(04:26):
then the frosting flavor, and thenthe day before opening date came, it
was just such a mess, liketrying to make all the flavors and it
just was not gonna work out.But luckily, a week before I opened
the bakery, I did have thisidea to put a face on a cookie,

(04:46):
and I thought I would just makea few of those just as an
opening daish dick thing. But look, that turned out to be the business,
which is crazy. That is crazy. So what was the first face
that you did? So? Iliterally just pictured a face on a cookie,
so I thought, okay, whatface should I put on a cookie?

(05:10):
And luckily it was when the primarieswere going on in twenty sixteen,
and I did Hillary Trump and Bernieoh god, yeah yeah. And that's
before things got really crazy. Soby then it was all a joke and
fun in games. So people werehaving a good time with those. Oh

(05:31):
my gosh, So just like that. So is that how your bakery was?
Is that how for Funny Face Bakerywas began? Is that how it
began? Um? For a while, I was actually really um. I
was pretty upset. Everybody kept comingin asking for face cookies and I kept
saying no, but I have theseamazing cupcakes and people were like, oh

(05:51):
all right, well never mind then, So people did keep asking for these
face cookies, so little by littleI kept introducing them, and then finally
I just saw that people just wantedthat, and that was it. So
did you happen? So what happenednext? So U? I let's see

(06:13):
two thousand and fall of two thousannineteen. I switched over from being Cupcake
Market to Funny Face Bakery, andI had a whole brand change, and
then the face Cookies really started. We were we were in the Wall Street

(06:33):
Journal, which was really big,and then two months later the Kardashians posted
us, which was huge, andthings were really going. And then the
pandemic happened, so I had toclose down my business. Okay, you
can't just say something like that andthen walk away. Yeah, backup,
way home, back up a littlebit. So you send cookies to Kim

(06:55):
Kardashian? What how did that happen? I was sorry, I mean,
like, it's so crazy. Weworked with so many amazing celebrity I know
how crazy that must have just aunted. I'm so sorry. I'm just thinking
it so funny. I'm like,oh, yeah, whatever, and I'm
like, oh yeah, no,not whatever. I like, go back
to that, please. Yeah.My sister always gets upset with me because

(07:20):
I'm like, oh, yeah,we did cookies for so and so the
other day She's like, wait, wait, hold on, yes, um,
actually, you know what's really crazy? Chris Jenner. Yeah, that
Chris Jenners looked really real. Soyou got, by the way, if
you just too. I'm talking toSarah Silverman. She's a founder of Funny
Face Bakery. You gotta go onher website. You got to check out

(07:41):
these cookies that she made, thesefaces on them, and Chris Jenner that
looks real. Yeah, so it'sreally crazy. So I even back in
two thousand and seventeen, before Ichanged my brand, I still doing face
cookies and Chris Jenner was actually oneof my first customers ever. My first

(08:03):
really big party was Chris Jenner.I think it was for I think it
was, oh my god, Iforgot what We've done a lot of Kardashian
parties, which is so cool. But yeah, she was really one of
my first customers, which is socool. So I think around Christmas time,

(08:24):
I wanted to send her a thankyou for being such a great customer.
So I sent her cookies of allof her grandchildren and she posted it
and gave us the sweetest shout out. And then the next day my phone
like I think my phone was goingthrough something. It was not okay,
And finally I got my phone towork. She gave the cookies to Kim

(08:48):
Kardashian, and Kim Kardashian gave usthe biggest shout out, and yeah,
they saved my business because that wasinsane. That is crazy. But I
want to make note that you justdon't do celebrities, and you just don't
do their faces. You do youcan do anything from purell to butterflies,
the McDonald's thing, you do awhole team. You could do like I

(09:11):
mean, if you go on thewebsite, you can check out all the
you have pictures of all this everythingthat you do, so it's not just
celebrities and it's not just your faceon a cookie. It could be basically
anything. You know, if you'rehaving a rainbow party, you can do
rainbow cookies or whatever it is.To check out the Facebook and don't just
think if you you have to getyour face on it. Although it's very

(09:33):
cool and I would imagine that peoplemust go crazy of these, especially for
all these kinds of parties, evenadult parties. How fun. Oh my
god, Yeah, they make thewhole party. And yeah we start out
with face cookies. But it's reallyamazing how now like anything could become a
cookie, Like literally, I thinkwe've made a cookie of almost anything.

(09:58):
And yeah, we tell people, well, you know, it's like it's
very likely it's going to be aguarantee that if you have a party,
people will instagram these cookies. Ohabsolutely, because there's nothing. I don't
think there's anything like them out there. So what is it? How long
does it take to make these?I mean these are pretty by the way,
it's not just cookies with face on. You do all kinds of yummy

(10:20):
because you sent me the most deliciouscookies ever. Thank god you didn't send
so many because I almost devoured whatyou have there is so good. But
how long does it take to makethese faces? M that's a good question.
It's a big process. So firstour designers have to design the face,
then our colors have to match upthe colors to the face. Then

(10:43):
we have to pipe on everything onit, and then we have to do
the finer details. So I sayfor about ten cookies, but everything it
takes, Oh my god, iflike without drying time and waiting time and
everything, maybe around six hours.Wow, that's amazing. So your team

(11:05):
you how big is your team?Oh my god, it's so crazy.
Um. I just have to saythis time last year, uh, during
the pandemic, I did not havea store. I didn't have any more
any employees. A year later aftera pandemic, we're a bit over fifty
employees. Oh my god, soexciting. Yeah, we're growing super fast.

(11:28):
It's it's crazy. So people couldorder the cookies online, um,
and how and where else can theyfind you? Can they find you in
a storefront or pop ups? Yeah? We have a store in Mall Street
and the Seaport which is super cute. And we're going to be opening another
store really soon, which I'm superexcited about. I can't see where,

(11:50):
but coming soon, coming soon, okay. But also very easy to order
online and you package it's so sosweet in your any facet Bakery boxes and
the way you send them and it'sall, you know, perfectly packed.
And I opened it and everything wasjust perfect, so nobody has to worry
about shipping or anything like that. What are your thoughts? Are you going

(12:13):
to be continuing to expand? Ohmy god, yeah. I mean I
think soon you'll see a funny Feastbakery in every state. I think we're
gonna, Oh my god, thisis a cookie world. I really do.
That's so exciting. So what arethe most popular cookies that people you
know that regular people, not justcelebrities. What do they order? Let's

(12:35):
see, people really love cookies thatwe make of food, Like we have
a burger cookie, we have aFrench fry cookie, so people love that.
We also have a really cute cookiedesign with the rainbow that says anxiety,
which is a big seller. Iguess you know a lot of people
have anxiety and can relate to that. Yeah, those are definitely some are

(13:00):
top sellers. I like the onesthat you did with them for the bride.
I guess it's a bride and thegroom or if someone's getting married.
It's like a winning dress and it'slike a suit and it's like bells and
flowers and champagne. It's so cute, Like it's such a great idea for
a gift for somebody to to sendto somebody. Yeah, and I think

(13:22):
just the it's cool because it's kindof like a fashion company, Like we
have to go through samples, thedesign process all agree on colors, so
it's a lot of fun. Socelebrities do they mostly order cookies of themselves
or do they order for other peopleto send to give to them. Yeah,
we've never actually spoke to a celebrity. It's usually like their people contact

(13:46):
us. So it's usually for acelebrities party or if they're promoting a brand,
they'll do a bunch of cookies.Oh my god, I think it's
such a brilliant idea. It's socreative, and I love the story of
how how it's hearted because you knowwhat, you never know what your journey
is going to be like, andyou or you thought you were going to
make the perfect cupcake and now you'remaking the perfect cookie with people's faces on

(14:09):
it, and it's it's just amazing. The story is amazing and I'm so
happy and I feel so honored thatyou listen to my podcast and that you
guys sought me out, that yousent me the cookies and they're just it
was just I'll be posting it obviouslyso everyone can see my face on the
cookie too, and check out herwebsite, Funny Face Bakery. You take
out the Instagram because there's so manygreat ideas that you can get to for

(14:33):
your parties and to send to peopleand to have for yourself. And it's
just such a such a creative idea. Oh thank you. Yeah, like
you said, you might have oneidea and you'll end up with another one.
So I always tell people, whenyou start your business, do you
not get hooked on what you startwith. You never know what will happen.

(14:56):
You never know what. What's yourfavorite cookie to make? Do you?
Are you back there baking it too? I'm actually I'm coming out the
new products. So I've been inthe baking section, which makes me really
happy because I haven't been baking lately. Um, but my favorite product,
We honestly make the best chocolate chipcookies ever. Yes, I can attest

(15:20):
it. Okay, thank you amazing. So chocolate chip cookie scans down for
sure? Oh my god. Soso your staff do they come up with
their own ideas like to promote too? Like besides for people asking for stuff?
Are you guys in your I'm sureand you're you have you must have
morning meetings. Like when I wasa television producer, we had morning meetings.
You must have that about what theday is going to be like or

(15:41):
do you just have your How doesthat work? Yeah? We um usually
like um whenever we're trying to brainstormcookie ideas, we're just like, okay,
what's hot right now? The otherday and you know, it's so
crazy. I feel so old becausemost of the people that work at the

(16:02):
bakery are in their early twenties andI'm like twenty eight, And yes,
I feel old, But yeah,I don't know what tippics an old soul,
you're an old soul. Yeah.I wish we could just do Meg
Ryan movies all day, you know, pres of that. But yeah,
they tell me what's in and what'shot. So yeah, we definitely have

(16:22):
fun meetings and greenstorm sessions. FunnyFace Bakery. Check them out their nut
free facility, which I really admireand like that so much. They deliver
in New York and ship nationwide somuch homemade sweets. They're so good,
mean worthy faces. We make yourface in a cookie. They make your
face. They can make a celebrityface. They can make anything that you

(16:42):
want, basically anything they could. You could probably make my puppy in a
cookie too. Oh. Actually, animal cookies that those are probably my favorite
yeah, dog cookies, cat cookiesso cute. Oh my gosh. I
might have to get you to makeone of my puppy Simon too. But
I thank you so much for sendingme the sweets and for making my face,

(17:03):
and so everyone's going to check outmy face on the cookie and check
out her website, check out theinstagram and order order up. It's a
great, great party favor to give. It's a great thing to give when
you go to somebody's house or justto your yummy your yummy food in general.
