Speaker 1 (00:01):
Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom from the new
show Breaking Bobby Bones. Bobby Bones, Welcome to show Man.
How are you, thanks, Mario. I'm healed. It took me
a long time after shooting this show to actually physically
be well again, but I'm back and I'm good. Well,
before we get to the injury, let's talk about the show. Congratulations.
By the way, it's on National Geographic. Uh, tell me
(00:23):
about it. Well. When I created it, I wanted to
do a show that was really highlighting underdogs and people
that are doing great things in America that really aren't
being highlighted anywhere else. And so it's you know, episode one,
Memorial Day is a guy named Mike who was in gangs,
went to prison, got out, wanted to right himself, and
so I learned his story. But he also became one
(00:44):
of the best rope technicians in the world, where he
does rope access and that's basically creating rope rigs to
hang in high places. So me, being afraid of hides,
had to go hang four thousand feet over the Grand
Canyon on a single rope and it was miserable. So
you get to learn his story and kind of root
along with him, but also see me being an idiot
and almost die. Well, on a personal level, you're overcoming
(01:04):
your fears. It's I'm sure very therapeutic. How did you
get hurt? I was climbing a tree. You know, I
was in northern California, and you know a lot of
forest fires are starting because the tops of trees are touching.
You know, I've dumb me. I live in Nashville, and
so you know, we're not struggling with what you gotta
struggle with the forest fire. So you know, I didn't
know that when a tree is engulfed, that's how it
(01:27):
spreads for the most part. And so what we did
is we had to climb trees. You have one spike
and each shoe and one rope and you climb the
tree that way, and I basically post my hip out,
yeah the tree. And it was the only time they
had to stop the show the whole season. Damn, that
is crazy. I used climbing trees as a kid, but
that's a kid. I did too, But as an adult,
you don't listen. After I turned forty, and you just
(01:47):
don't bounce back like you're using to. Believe me, I know, man,
I know, I got the surgeries to prove it right.
There was that the toughest task you think you've you've done. Um,
you know, I'm not an adventure guy. I hate adventure.
So every episode was tough for me. I think that
was the reason I wanted to show people that I
could push myself. But you know, there was a guy
named Ralph who lost both of his legs serving our country.
A bomb blew off his legs and so he had
(02:09):
to come back to the States. He's from southern California,
had never played hockey, and he started playing hockey as
a video game. And now he is on the US Olympic,
the Paralympic team, and they want to go medal. And
I went and learned how to do that and then
competed with and against them and really got beat up bad.
And I had never played hockey. I'm from Arkansas, yea,
so we didn't have hockey, and so that was really
tough for me, but also probably one of the most
(02:32):
compelling three or four days I've spent. Oh man, it
sounds like a lot of fun. We'll congrats on that.
And uh, I know we got another season of AI.
Uh Now in the books, I do you think this
season compared to some of the others you were involved in. Well,
last season, this last season sucked because the pandemic would
go from home, and so for us to be able
to be back on that stage was pretty fantastic. And
I think that, you know, America got it right. In
(02:53):
some some years, I don't think America gets it right.
But I was really happy with the season, and you know,
it was just good, as you know, to be to
shoot a show with people in the room. And so
we're getting the right We're going in the right direction now.
Thank god light at the end of the tunnel. I'm
with you right there. So so let's tall a guy
he Radio Music Awards. Who do you got for song
of the Year? We got Blinding Lights, Circles Don't start now,
(03:14):
rock Star and Watermelon Sugar. I mean, Harry Styles plays
in my house all the time. My fiancee is a
huge Harry Styles fan, and all those songs are so
good that I just decided to pick which one that
I probably like the most. So I'll probably go with
the Watermelon Sugar. Okay, we'll see. That's smart. That's for
a guy that's engaged. You're on the right track. Right there,
you should have learned. What is your advice here? I
(03:35):
am I've never been married before. I'm about to about
to do it for the very first time. What is
your advice for early marriage? Well, I think you're approaching
it at the right age, because as a man, I
think you gotta have your act together and know yourself
a little really well, I should say, before you you
start diving in and you start partnering with someone else,
so that right there, you're you're way ahead of the game.
(03:56):
And um, I think you just kind of listening, communicating
and nod in the lot. It was a long way.
You'll see a lot of listening and agreeing to things
that I probably wouldn't have agreed to in my old life.
So I'm slowly getting there. Yeah, you'll realize it doesn't
matter all that ship doesn't matter. Soil later on, Um,
(04:16):
what are you getting married? By the way, We're getting
married later this summer and in Nashville, And I'm good
for you decided. We already moved it back twice and
this time we said, hey, pandemic or not, we're doing it.
And now that it's happening, we're pumped that people can
come and you know, be together and not wear masks,
and we can actually have it because we were big
mask whereas we were abiding by every rule. And this
was the final time we were pushing it back so
(04:37):
late in the summer here in Nashville. Great time and
great time. We'll congratulations on that. Congratulations on the show,
and everyone please be sure to watch Breaking Bobby Bones
a memorial date on National Geographic Bobby. Thanks for checking in, Mario.
Good to see you, little Feti
