Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario Lopez.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
You are Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom from
the Netflix show Is It Cake?

Speaker 1 (00:07):
And Saturday Night Live.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Mikey Day, Welcome to the show man.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
How are you? What's up? How are you?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
I'm doing well. I'm doing well. I was just talking
about this on my other show, Access Hollywood. This is fascinating.
Season two of Is It Cake is now here. Have
you got any better at figuring out what's keke and
what's not?

Speaker 1 (00:27):
You would think I would, but I don't think so.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
I feel like I would, but I'll still see them
and need help certain cakes. I literally will be inches
from them, and I won't know what's real and what's not.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
It is pretty incredible. How'd you guys take it to
the next level for season two?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Well, first of all, I can't believe I'm talking to you.
This is awesome. You're awesome.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Thanks. Remember when you would broadcast from the grove? Sorry? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
you remember that? Yeah? I used to.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
When my son was born. A lot of days i'd
like just strapman a b orn and just walk to
the grove and we'd walk. I'd be like, there's Mario.
They're broadcasting from the groves for a while, right, yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It was. It was for a while. I liked it
out there a lot of a lot of options to
eat with Farmers Market right there.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
It worked out well. Of course they're doing it from
the grove anyway. Sorry, all right.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Season two, the cakes are bigger. It's just everything's been
elevated a bit. And the cakes that the show makes,
because the bakers make cakes, but the show also makes
cakes for some of the games. Those are all way
more intense. There's like a working water cooler in one,
so it's like, okay, there's plumbing inside this cake.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
That's insane.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
But it's like the same, it's what you like from
the first season, just heightened a bit and thrown in
like sequelized basically. But the same energy is there and
the positivity amongst the acres from because that was season one.
Everyone's very supportive of one another and there was a
joy to the show.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
So I think that's still there.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
What happens to all that cake? Do you get to
go home with a doggy bag? Does the crew get
hooked up?

Speaker 3 (02:14):
It's taken to the Netflix vaults where no, Yeah, they
give it a lot to the crew and stuff and
judges can take it home. People can take it home
as they please. I don't usually take it home because
it would add up exponentially because some of these cakes
are enormous, like they'll make giant gym.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Bags just densely packed with cake.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
So I think it's it's available to who whomever wants
to take it home.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
A lot of dessert options there. Okay, let's talk a
little lesson l Who on the cast makes you laugh
the most?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Oh man, honestly, it's the boring answer, but everyone truly
makes me laugh on that show. Everyone's so funny. I
do have Keenan is kind of my kryptonite, so he's
so funny. But Keenan, if you thinks something is funny,
will kind of have this little grin, this little subtle grin,

(03:15):
and you're like, oh no, Keenan thinks this is funny
and all. I'm always on the edge when I'm out
there with him, especially if like something goes wrong because
he's been on the show for so long, he knows
the show so well. If there's like a missed camera
shot or some weird timing, he'll kind of smile like, oh,
this is going wrong, and there's something about it. When

(03:37):
he starts to have that little smile, I'll lose it.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
It's closing in on fifty years, which I can't believe.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Insane.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Isn't that insane? What do you think the legacy of
your era will be?

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Man, that's a loaded question, Mario. I have no idea.
I mean, it's so specific. I mean, Lauren always says
it's like the cast when you were in high school
is to you, like your cast and your favorite cast.

(04:10):
So hopefully the youngsters who are watching will view our
cast in the similar light as some of those past,
like legendary casts.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
So I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
I know we've kind of since i've been there, we've
been through a lot, like the Trump years was a
whole thing, yeah, and the pandemic, So there's been a
lot of intense societal shift since we've been there, So
we've kind of weathered a lot of interesting changes.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, that makes for great content, right. I think Lauren's
right because whenever I get the opportunity to speak or
interview someone that I was a huge fan of during
my high school developmental years, it always is extra special
and it's always the best.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Right, Yeah, exactly right.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
It's like I mean this cast fine, but I mean, dude,
back in the day, exactly like your cast.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
You're very protective.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yep, you have a son, right, yep, ten years old,
ten years old, the one.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yep, just one boy.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
There you go. What's he into right now?

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Dude, he's really into soccer, so he's super pumped that
Messy is coming to Miami.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
And chess.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
He's really into chess, which is cool. I tried to
learn chess. I'm I cannot absorb all the complexities taught him.
If you didn't we it was like a class at
his school. There was a chess class. But then so
we knew chess was going to be part of kind
of the curriculum. So we sent him to this little

(05:46):
day camp in New York and he just kind of
absorbed it very quickly and got into it.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Which it's such.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
The more I learned about chess, the more I'm just
I'm so pressed and like shocked that these kids, some
are super young too.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
It's like six year old.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
That is impressive, and like you know, he'll go to
some tournaments and it's all based on rating. It's like
age doesn't matter. So one time my son played like
a sixty five year old dude. It's just so funny
seeing pictures of this little ten year old playing this
sixty five year old man for like three hours.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Wow, it's crazy.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
That's awesome.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Good for him.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
It sounds like a well rounded kid.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Man.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Nice nice job there.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Well, congrats are your kids good, They're doing great.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Thanks for asking. I got three of them, all all beautiful,
all very nice, driving me crazy family.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Thanks Pal, I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Man.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Congrats on the show.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
For those out there and haven't checked it out, check
it out. It's a lot of fun. You can watch
season two of Is It Cake right now on Netflix. Mikey,
