Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario a little bit. Mario Lopez joining
me now on zoom from the Backstreet Boys. Mr Nick Carter,
Welcome to show man. What's up, Mario? How are you?
I'm doing well. I see your Buccaneers UM flag prominently
placed right there? Is that where homes at Tampa? Um? Well,
I'm living in Vegas. I've been out in Vegas for
(00:20):
the past five years when we did our residency got
him and so. But I am from Tampa. I grew
up in Tampa when I was eight years old, so
I could I last year could probably say that I
was a Buccaneers fan. Yeah. It's funny because I was
at the Super Bowl yesterday. I was. I was actually
with the general manager from the Buccaneers. Very nice him
(00:41):
and his wife. Oh you were with Jason Yeah, very
nice people. Yeah. It's got to really really good friends
with him. He's awesome. It's funny because he called me
um Well. Actually, a couple of years ago before we
actually got um Tom Brady. Uh, I was constantly harassing him,
asking him like, what's going on, who's gonna be our quarterback? Everything?
And I'm suppose it would give me all this inside information. Um,
(01:06):
and tell me stuff that I really couldn't tell the public.
And I kind of knew that Tom was coming there
before and they were gonna make a run for him.
So it was funny. I like it. You got the
bat line. Good for you, my man. Um, congrats on
the new solo single Easy with Jimmy Allen. Howd this
song come together? Um? So, actually the song came together.
(01:27):
I was in the studio about four months ago. I
was trying to get um, trying to get motivated again
in the middle of the pandemic. It's been two years
since I've been on the road with the boys. We
actually had we stopped our DNA World War. We were
down in um in South America, down to Brazil getting
ready to play for like fifty seats stadium, and then
just kind of picked up went home, and so I
(01:48):
been pretty much just being a dad, stay at home dad,
taking kids of school, doing all those things. And uh
so I try to motivate myself, got in the studio,
started writing songs, and I just wrote a song pretty
much about like what I had been doing for the
past you know, two years, making breakfast in the morning,
getting up just you know, gaining weight. You know yeah,
(02:10):
you know, so it's uh, and so I wrote the
song called easy um my producer Bick Martin. I asked
him because I was following. Um we had done some
songs uh a couple of years ago with the Florida
George line Jamma and Me, which was a crossover country
hit uh and that was number one and so um,
and we've done stuff in the past like drowning, um,
(02:31):
you know with a B. Actually, boys, we've had some
you know, influence on the countryside. And so anyways, I
asked Vick, I said, hey, well, can you reach out
to Jim because I'm a huge fan. I've been listening
to his music. Then I started watching him on Dancing
with the Stars and and so he started asking me
for advice uh when he was on the show, um,
which was pretty funny. But then he just decided to
(02:51):
uh to write a second verse, and so we we
became really really great friends. Just shot a music video
in the desert about a week ago, and so that's
gonna come out really soon. But he's an incredible human being, uh,
super genuine, just down to earth and incredibly talented. And
so he wrote the second person restless history. Nice man
is this going to be part of an entire album? Um, honestly,
(03:15):
you know, we got about two months before we start
touring again. We got about fifty eight shows in the States,
starting in June at the Hollywood Bowl out in Los Angeles. Um,
would you gotta come bring the family? But so, you know,
I again was I've been. I've dabbled in the solo world. Honestly,
I have not really had any success as a solo artist.
(03:38):
And I think there's a couple of things with that
number One. You know, been working really hard with the boys,
you know, have had ted albums with them, and um,
you know, been just happy being a backshop boy, happy
being you know, being in my niche. But this song
is starting to resonate with a lot of people out there,
and and you know, so people want more of it.
(03:58):
I might dabble it more into it, you know, I'm right?
Oh man, well good good luck with that. And you
mentioned the boys. The first full fledged Backstreet Boys tour
is finally going down, Um in two years obviously is
the pandemic and what have you? I got imagine excited
to be back on the road. Um. You know, it's
funny because, like I said, I gave a game like
(04:19):
twenty pounds. So my fighting weight on the road was
when I was dancing and singing two hours, was you know,
around two a little bit under two hundred. I got
at the height of the pandemic. You might have to
call your GM manager buddy here as you get started.
But I lost. I love the weight actually, so it
came off. So I'm down about good for you. I'm
(04:40):
getting closer, So I'm excited. I really am, you know, Mario,
I was thinking, um, after two years, this pandemic, the
state of the world, the way everything is, people really
want to be entertained right now, and that's you know,
they're they're longing for performances and just to just just
get away for a couple of hours. And that my job,
that's our job as entertainers. You know, we've been around
(05:02):
her almost thirty years, with Factor Boys almost thirty years,
and we've been together. And I'm excited to get out
there and put out, put some smile on some people's
faces and uh, just entertained, do my job. I agree
with you. They're they're chomping at the bit to get
out there. Will the family join you or you kind
of maybe some on some stops for the most part.
Your it's funny. Well, so, um, my son is five
years old, my middle daughter she's too, and they're both
(05:25):
in school now, and you know, and my newborn daughter
she's ten months old, and uh, you know, thank you. Um. So,
on one hand, you know, yes, I could put them
on a bus. We do kind of like the whole
country thing. The other guys have pretty much, uh, they
had their families on the road all the time. But
(05:46):
for me, you know, school is so important and making
sure that they have structure and making sure that they
have like consistent you know, schedule and all those things.
So I'm starting to get odin into into soccer, karate,
you know, te ball, all these things. And so maybe
during a you know a spring break or you know,
summer vacation, you know, maybe they'll come out the road. Um,
but yeah, I'll definitely miss them again. I've had two
(06:08):
children born in like since we pretty much stopped, you know. Yeah, yeah,
you get to go. I don't know how it's gonna be. Yeah,
I like that plan. Well, congratulations on everything man, and
good luck on the tour and with the new jam.
Listen to Easy on I Heart Radio. Or wherever you
get new music. Nick, thanks checking in brother. Hey Mario,
(06:29):
before I go, are you still at shadow boxing? Um?
I go over once in a while. I go over
once in a while, but yeah, I go to I
usually go to a wild Card or a brick house
boxing out here. Yeah, you get into it. You know
Mike Hazard and all those Yeah, yeah, those are those
are boys. We used to train there a lot. Is
that right? My wife, My wife told me tell you, hi,
I guess you guys stepped through the ring a little
(06:49):
bit or something. Okay, what's her what's her name? I'm sure? Okay,
but I don't tell yourself. Hello, she says. She remembers, like,
you guys like stepping the ring. You guys are just
playing around or whatever. But yeah, I missed that gym
a lot. So that was a lot of fun training
out there. Right on, man, I have to get out
there in Vegas then, yes, sir, Well, hey, well, God
(07:10):
bless man. Um. I love to the family, and thank
you so much for interviewing me. I appreciate it. You
got a buddy. Take care later. With Mario Lopez
