Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Anny and Samantha and welcome to Stephane
Never told you Protection of I Heart Radio, and welcome
to another sub sub segment of Women Around the World,
fictionally Women around the World and further Women Around a

(00:27):
Galaxy Star Wars edition. Yes, yes, and it's you know,
good timing because as we record this as you hear it,
if you're listening to it, when it's when it drops
as they say, we're entering like Made the Fourth b
with you, Revenge of the Fifth all that. But we're
recording this on a which is seen on Morph Day.

(00:48):
So happy Zeno Morph Day. I don't know what that is,
but I'm gonna nod. Thank you Alien Okay, it's Alien Day. Okay,
so excited. Um. The woman we are talking about is
Sabine Wren, who we mentioned in our episode on Subtine

(01:09):
as a past wielder of the Dark Saber. So you
can see that episode for more context about the Dark
Sabers whole deal, because she did play a role and
that whole thing. As per usual, Samantha, I'm going to
run through this and you know, Paul, if you have
any questions, thoughts, concerns, uh, this one did get complicated
and it's kind of out of order, but I think

(01:31):
it will make sense. I just got confused. I was
tired when I did the first draft. So being is
someone I kind of no because I did watch all
of Rebels as opposed to anything else, so that she's
the one that I do love because she has some
Asian representation and I love it. But okay, just confused

(01:53):
me now that I don't feel like I know it. Yeah,
that's that's my goal. No, I think it will make sense.
I think just got a little. That whole dark Sabory
thing can really bog you down if you try to
keep track of all that stuff. Um, but anyway, okay.
Sabine was voiced by Tias Takar, and it was just
recently announced that Natasha you Borditso has been cast to

(02:14):
play Hair and upcoming Star Wars live action stuff. My
theory is she's going to train the Mandalorian how to
use the Dark Saber. But we'll see. Sabine Wren was
a Mandalorian woman first introduced too Many of Us in
the animated show Rebels, which took place in the Star
Wars timeline a few years before the events of Rogue
one and a new Hope, and then a little after

(02:34):
Return of the Jedi, just like a little peak um.
So Sabine is really into art and spray paint, and
went on to provide some inspiration for the symbol of
the Alliance. She briefly became the owner of the Dark Saber. Yes,
but let us step back. H Sabine was born on
Mandalora to Clan Wren of House Visla. Her mother Ursa,

(02:56):
was a member of death Watch during the time that
Mandalora was in chaos after Satine's murder in the collapse
of the new Mandalorian government towards the end of the
Clone Wars, which we talked about, and that's a teen
episode and it was a whole thing, so go check
that one out if you want to learn more about that.
Sabine's armor that she forged when she got older was
very unique, and she inherited a night owl's helmet, which

(03:16):
if you haven't seen Rebels, you saw it on the
Mandalorian Um. It's just kind of got like a distinct
pattern on the helmet. She started her career at the
Imperial Academy of Mandaloria, where she followed orders without question,
though she did study up on some distractors, which got
her into some trouble. As part of her time there,
she built weapons that she believed would be used for peace. Um.

(03:40):
It's kind of more complicated than that, but we'll say
that she named one the Duchess after Satine and used
best card to reinforce it, which is a big no
no um. And this allowed for it to destroy best
car armor uh and thus the people wearing it Mandalorians,
something that was viewed as blasphemous to Mandalorian and yes,

(04:01):
to her horror, these weapons were used against her people,
including her family. This left her racked with guilt and
she left Mandalore, an action that led to her being
branded as a traitor by the Empire and by her mother, father,
and brother, who her mother was the leader of Clan Wren.
Her family paid a price for her desertion. Her father
was held hostage by the Empire, while her mother and

(04:23):
brother had to prove their loyalty by serving the Empire.
Sabine was able to destroy the weapons she created, but
the Empire was able to rebuild it using her research.
For a while, she worked as a bountie hunter alongside
katsu Ano, but She was eventually recruited to be a
member of the Ghost Crew by Harris and Doulah and
Jedied Canaan are Caleb from Bad Patch? Um? Why is yeah?

(04:47):
Why is he Caleb and Canaan? Because I was very confused.
I keep saying the two different names, and I was
very confused. He's he kind of did a whole like
I'm leaving this identity behind, I'm becoming someone else. Uh okay,
so he just changed his name. Yeah, yeah, pretty much. Yeah,
I know that confused me to I don't know, is
it the same person or is it not? Yes, it

(05:09):
is unless they're going to pull some wild twists and
spoiler dead. It's it's tragic. I mean, we're going to
talk about that. I guess I should have put a
spoiler alert at the time. I was spoiler alert for
rebels because some men were and stuff. But yes, Harrison,
Doula and Jedi Kanaan Jaris. She joins up with them

(05:31):
after her and Anya had a falling out. Through this
to being fought with them against the Empire, and she
used her art to inspire hope and rebellion. She was
on the Empire's most wanted list and was known as
the Artist and on the Ghost she was Specter five.
So it's interesting because a lot of these characters we
were talking about Um from these shows everybody hated in

(05:52):
the beginning. Everybody hated us Soak. In the beginning, people
didn't like the Bean because they thought she was like,
I don't know, like be into art makes her not
interesting or it's very silly. Yeah, it didn't make any sense,
but she Most of these characters did end up becoming
fan favorites. But I just thought that was interesting because

(06:13):
I hadn't heard actually of that kind of controversy, Like,
but she's a painter, Okay, okay, interesting, interesting critique. The

(06:36):
Bean and the Ghost crew went on all kinds of
missions and caused all kinds of mischief, Frank, some enslaved
people going undercover as an imperial to recruit pilots like
Wedge Antilles. Um inspiring people to beings. Yeah, she really
did inspire people with her art. They were reunions, betrayals.
Working with Leah or Ghana, that was cool. Running into
I when she was attempting to track down Darth Maul,

(06:58):
the one time ruler mandel Or. She comes across the
dark Saber on Dathomere, the planet of the Night Sisters.
At first, she avoided the responsibility that comes with the
Dark saber Um leading a planet and to people, because again, hey,
you went in combat, then you're supposed to rule this
planet and lead the people of Mandalorian. But another Mandalorian

(07:18):
and Kanan convinced her to train with it to unite
the Mandalorians and convinced them to join the rebellion against
the Empire. She convinced her family that the Empire screwed
them over and helped them kill the Imperial Vistory of
Mandalori Gar Saxon, though she said this in the exchange,
he said, I'll never yield to you, girl. You'll have
to kill me, And she said that might be the
Mandalorian way, but it's not my way, not any more dramatic.

(07:43):
It was dramatic stuff. She supported her family during the
Mandalorian Civil War before returning to the Ghost Crew just
in time for Yes Kanan to die, though she still
helps free the planet loth Old where he died. Before
Kanan died, Yes, she did train with him and Ezra
in order to wield the Dark Sabers, something she resented

(08:04):
due to the baggage of her family and Mandalore, and
she's just besieged with self doubt. She is gifted with
some anti Jedi weapons and is able to beat Ezra,
but is defeated by Canan, who tells her that while
those weapons might help her then m Ben Eyes, she
needs a lot more training. She admits to Ezra she
doesn't want responsibilities of the Dark Saber, that she was
disgrace to her family. Canaan and Sabine are able to

(08:27):
work more effectively on her training, and she confronts long
hidden emotions bash she felt about working for the Empire,
abandoning it, her family's estrangement, and how she hurt her
planet through this. She is able to master the Dark Saber.
So again, as we said, that's a teen one, the
Kaiber Crystal, you have to work with it. You have
to otherwise you're just fighting against it and it's never gonna,

(08:48):
never gonna work correctly for you. After her success, she
reunites and reconciles with her family, though they first attacked her.
Her mother was a hard sell, expressing disappointment that her
daughter joined the rebellion and that the Mark Saber is
just a symbol, and on top of that, because she
found it and didn't win it in a fight, she
doesn't have a rightful claim to it, which is that

(09:09):
whole thing that's going on right now. She said she
was disappointed in how Sabine had turned out who. Sabine
discovers her mom is planning on selling out her Jedi
friends and the Dark saber Um to the Empire and
Clan Saxon. However, Clan Saxon sold her, her mother, and
the family out for being traders. With the help of

(09:30):
the Jedi and some allies, the family comes together to
fight Clan Saxon so beIN briefly wielding a lightsaber. This
is when she refuses to kill her challenger and that
dramatic quote from above, as is Mandalorian tradition, but her
mother does it instead to protect her. Through this, she
gained the respect of her family. She stayed behind to
help find the true leader of Mandalore. Clan Wren later

(09:53):
provides support to the rebels, in part because her mother
was moved by the loyalty the friends had to each other.
Sabine and her brother, as you, her family and Sabine
joyous forces with bo Katon Creese uh huh to destroy
the weapons to being created once and for all. Sabine
is captured and pressured too instead enhanced the weapon, but
she programs it to target stormtrooper armor instead. Sabine gave

(10:16):
bo Katan the Dark Saber, assuring her that she was
the rightful leader, and the Mandolorians who witnessed this pledged
their allegiance to the Katon. After that, the crew of
the Ghosts joined up on Yavin with the Rebellion at large.
They partnered with Sagarea for a minute uh and they
were involved in that whole battle. And then at the

(10:37):
end of rebels, she joins up with a Soka to
go for Ezra who went missing in wild Space with Throng.
So see how that goes. So this is supposed to
be right before we see Darth Mall No, Darth Gideon.
Who is that dude from Mandalorian Moth Gideons? Yeah, so close?

(11:00):
Who has the Dark Saber? So this is after that
is before then, right? But because Bokaton lost it to him, yes,
and Bokaton was trying to go back and get it,
but the Mandalorian got it instead, Yes, exactly, And I
believe they actually haven't really detailed how she lost it.

(11:21):
They've talked about it, but I don't think I think
they're going to do a bigger thing. So they tinted
at it, but they never really fully say. We just
know she's really angry, and then she is the Fils
defeated after a Manlian gets it. I didn't know what
to do. She can't take it a second time as
a gift because she already took it one time as
a gift, right, So that's kind of the bigger why

(11:42):
she was so mad is because so being gave it
to her. You're supposed to win it in combat. Technically,
it's a being. Didn't win it in combat either. She
found it um, I believe, and it was a further
insult to injury that she lost it to an imperial
moth giddy and in a fight, so he wonted, but
she kind of there's kind of this talk around like

(12:04):
the reason that happened is because they didn't do it
correctly in the first place, and so that's why she
was so determined it has to go this way. I
will not do this again. No one will respect me,
you know, one will follow my leadership. And then kind
of what's already happened. M right, then the Mandalorian gets it.
I think, I don't know, it's going to be interesting.

(12:25):
There's a lot, a lot of threads that play here, right,
don't give it to grog No, no, no, no, that
would be interesting. That's thought he did. For a second.
Dog has his own lightsaber, right, but then he gave
it up. I think I have a theory that because
I said, the person Tarbisla who made the Dark Saber

(12:47):
was the first Jedi Mandalorian. So I think they're going
to do something like that with Grogu. But I really
don't know um going to be a Mandalorian. Now, Hey,
he took a he took the armor. God is what that? Yeah?
I think I mean he chose that path. I don't know.

(13:07):
That means they're gonna like teach them to be to die.
He's gonna die either way. Because one really know what
it doesn't turn out well for anybody. That's why so many,
so many spoiler alerts. I apologize this has been a
conversation that Annie and I have had before, so therefore

(13:30):
I'm trying to catch up again. Yes, so my bad
for that ending. No, it's not good. I have so
many thoughts I want to like really vent about some
of my theories and thoughts, so I'm into it. I
will say one thing I love about Sabine. She's pretty, Like,
she's cool, and she's easy to She's very friendly and

(13:51):
easy to talk to you. I really love for her
in a SOCOs friendship. Yeah. I like that they like
had each other's backs and she being is like no,
I'll go with you. Me was one of my favorite
characters thus far. Again, good representation. Yea, um be she
wasn't just waiting for Ezra to come about. She was

(14:11):
kind of leading that movement on her own. So I
appreciated that. Yeah, she's a badass, and just because she's
just graffiti doesn't mean I don't know why that negates
her anymore. It would have been different if she had
been the brother who had been that character. I think so,
I personally think so. Then people were complaining about actually
changes the hair her hair color, and like, okay, um

(14:37):
she's got galactically punk, so what are you waiting? I
think she's got a lot of good character arcs. I mean,
we really ran through a lot of stuff in there,
a lot of drama, so yeah, I am interested to
see the live action representation of her and how it
goes and see what happens in the story. But well,

(14:57):
in the meantime, Asoka is next, I promise of us.
But is the end of our sub sub sub segment um.
If you have any suggestions, I promise we're going to
move out of Star Wars territory soon. I promised, not
