Shawn Mendes was clear when he revealed that his new single, "If I Can't Have You," was inspired by The 1975, so it was no surprise that he sent frontman Matty Healy a gift around the time of its release. However, no one expected the pop star to deliver his famed Calvin Klein underwear as the present.
Shortly before the release of the track, Healy took to Twitter to send a funny message Mendes' way. "My tour manager said you are sending me a present @ShawnMendes it better be them iconic underpants," he wrote and to our surprise, the 20-year-old pop star delivered with those very "100% authentic" underwear. In a follow-up message, Healy shared a shot of the underwear wrapped up in a ribbon with a certificate of authenticity for the "iconic underpants" signed by Mendes.
Prior to the premiere of the song/video, Mendes hopped on a YouTube chat, where he answered questions about the new cut, which was worked on alongside longtime collaborators Scott Harrs, Teddy Geiger and Nate Mercreau and produced by Shawn and Teddy. "Truthfully my inspiration behind the song musically was from The 1975," he wrote. "Not to say it sounds crazy like them but I was obsessed with their album while making this song!" During this weekend's episode of Saturday Night Live, Mendes took the release to the Studio 8H stage for his first-ever performance of the song, as well as a rendition of "In My Blood." It marked his second musical guest appearance on the NBC variety show. Back in 2016, he appeared on the show to play "Mercy" and "Treat You Better."
