Lizzo is enjoying the fruits of her labor as she celebrates her first number-one record.
The Detroit-born singer-songwriter's record "Truth Hurts," which released nearly two years to the day (September 19, 2017), finally topped the Billboard Hot 100 this week. According to Billboard, Lizzo's uplifting track rises from No. 3 and will take its reigning rank on the chart (dated September 7).
The "Coconut Oil" musician also gave herself — and her fans — a well-deserved shout-out on Twitter to mark the accomplishment. "WE’RE NUMBER 1. THIS IS A W FOR ALL OF US. ANYBODY WHO EVER FELT LIKE THEY VOICE WASN’T HEARD. ANYBODY WHO FELT LIKE THEY WEREN’T GOOD ENOUGH. YOU ARE. WE ARE. CHAMPIONS. I LOVE YALL 3 MUCH. LIZZBIANS UNITE," she tweeted Tuesday (September 3).
Lizzo's new leader record comes weeks after the star performed her hit at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on August 26. In case you're unsure of the magnitude of this moment, the sleeper-hit beat out some pretty tough competitors, including Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello's "Senorita" and Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy."
Making it an even bigger deal, Lizzo is the sixth female rapper to top the charts, following in the footsteps of predecessors Iggy Azealea, Lauryn Hill, Lil Kim, Shawnna, and Cardi B.
The latter tweeted congratulations to the new chart-topper, writing: "The fact that Lizzo a couple months ago felt underestimated and now she have a #1!!!!B---H! take that!take that ! Makes me emotional 😭 It’s the best feeling in the world."
