Last week, Hayley Williams posted a fun workout video to her uplifting new song “Over Yet” that got thousands of fans up off their couches trying out the routine.
While many fans (raises hand!) appreciated the creative way to get their daily exercise, some online trolls took it as an opportunity to shame the Paramore singer for — gasp — looking happy.
On Monday (April 13), the “Simmer” singer took to Twitter to reply to one rude reply on her tweet about the video.
Suicide trigger warning:
The tweet read: “Try not to hang yourself in that room once the fake giddiness wears out.”
Williams used the interaction as an opportunity to speak out about mental health to her 5.1 million followers.
“Now is also not the time to be skeptical of anyone’s battle with their mental health - which i also see a lot of on social media,” she wrote. “just be a f***ing nice person right now. try empathy if that’s not something you’ve given a chance. try activism... take your frustrations there.”
Fans had her back and replied to her tweets thanking her for what she said, letting her know how much she's been there for them during their own mental health struggles, as well as assuring her that she is loved and to try and ignore those who are insensitive about mental health.
Williams followed up the tweets with one more writing, “for the love of god, do not seek out random opportunities to be a dick on the internet... maybe ever... but especially not in this critical moment. i want to be able to read responses to posts. i want to be present. i want to connect. and i dont want to feel sh***ier for that.”
The-31-year-old singer has always been an advocate for mental health and has recently opened up about how her own mental health and therapy has influenced and impacted her songwriting for her debut solo album, Petals For Armor.
Fans can pick up Petals For Armor May 8 and listen to her new song, “My Friend.”
