Pop Smoke's first posthumous lead single, “Make It Rain” has arrived.
The track, which features Rowdy Rebel, dropped on Friday (June 12), which was originally slated to be the release date for the late rapper's debut album. As fans know, UMG executive Steven Victor announced on Instagram earlier this week that the project was pushed back due to the ongoing civil unrest sparked by the murder of George Floyd.
"Music is the tool of revolution. We have been watching, along with the rest of the world, as long overdue change starts to take root. We have seen Pop’s music become the soundtrack of the moment, unifying the masses. Given recent events, we have decided to delay the release of his album out of respect for the movement," Steven Victor wrote. “'Make It Rain' will be released this Friday, June 12th. The album will be released on July 3rd. Please join us in celebrating Pop Smoke’s legacy. 💫💫💫."
Pop, born Bashar Jackson, was shot and killed on February 19. The 20-year-old rapper's death remains under investigation as the Los Angeles Police Department is still trying to figure out whether he was the victim of a random robbery or if it was a targeted hit.
In his final interview, which was conducted two weeks before his passing, Pop spoke about his plans for a documentary about his life, the Brooklyn drill scene and being targeted by police for his lyrics. "I’m gonna put out a movie or a documentary. I’m gonna make that sh*t about me," he told Complex. "Walk ’em through where I used to live, where I used to be at, and why they look at me the way they look."
The documentary will reportedly be released by the late rapper's team.
