A former two-sports all-state athlete for St. Augustine High School was reportedly identified by New Orleans Police as the man stabbed in the Algiers area Sunday night.
Akieem Jolla, 37, was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital, the New Orleans Police Department confirmed to NOLA.com. The incident reportedly took place at around 7:17 p.m. in the 1500 block of Newton Street.
Police said Jolla was arguing with an unidentified suspect when the two began to fight, which resulted in Jolla being stabbed in the chest. The Sun-Sentinel in South Florida was the first publication to identify Jolla as the victim killed in the incident Monday morning.
Jolla, a 2002 graduate, earned all-state accolades in both track and football, earning a football scholarship to the University of Miami, where he played wide receiver from 2002-2005 before transferring to New Mexico State for his redshirt senior season, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
Police said Jolla was found with stab wounds in a parking lot on Saturday, WDSU reports.
The New Orleans Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident and seeking assistance identifying a suspect.
