Hurricane Delta Expected To Make Landfall On Gulf Coast This Week

Another hurricane is heading toward the Gulf of Mexico and will likely hit Louisiana later this week. As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Delta was gaining strength in the Caribbean and has intensified into Category 4 strength with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph.

"While there is large uncertainty in the track and intensity forecasts, there is a significant risk of dangerous storm surge, wind, and rainfall hazards along the coast from Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle beginning Thursday night or Friday," the National Hurricane Center said in a statement. "Residents in these areas should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and monitor updates to the forecast of Delta."

Governor John Bel Edwards has also warned parishes along the coast to prepare for Delta, saying, "It is common for many people to experience hurricane fatigue during a busy season, but we need everyone to take this threat seriously."

Delta is expected to hit the Yucatan as a major hurricane, KPLC reports, with an "extremely dangerous" storm surge that could raise water levels 6-9 feet. Because this storm is rapidly changing, updates can be found at the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The NHC also said there could be heavy rain and flash floods across parts of the Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley, and southeastern states as Delta moves inland.
