Off-Duty Nurse Killed In Hit-And-Run While Helping Crashed Car On Highway

A Boston man has been arrested in connection to a fatal hit-and-run that killed an off-duty nurse who was helping a victim of a rollover crash on a highway in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Sunday (November 1).

Luis Baez, 22, of Jamaica Plain, is charged with driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs resulting in death, driving so as to endanger resulting in death, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and operating on a suspended license resulting in death, Rhode Island State Police confirmed to WHDH.

The victim, identified as Jennifer Toscano, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed to WHDH.

Toscano, who worked as a nurse in Stoughton, was struck by a red vehicle while attempting to render aid to a passenger involved in a rolled over vehicle by Exit 30 on Route 95 North, Rhode Island State Police confirmed to WHDH.

Troopers responded to the scene at around 1:45 a.m. Baez fled the scene but was found by state police shortly after their arrival.

Toscano was the mother of a son who recently also lost his father, a statement on behalf of her family given to WHDH by a family friend confirmed.

“They just want everyone to know how much of a selfless person she was. How much of an amazing daughter, sister, mother and friend she was. Her son is left without his mother and best friend,” the statement read.

A GoFundMe page has been setup by a relative to pay for Toscano's child's future.

Baez is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence District Court on Monday, WHDH reports.
