Benson Predicts 'Much More Complete Picture' Of Ballot Counts Wednesday

The presidential race is still a nail-biter in Michigan on Wednesday morning (November 4), following Tuesday’s Election Day (November 3).

The Associated Press and other sources have yet to call the race in Michigan, but the vote count as of Wednesday morning shows a nearly 50-50 split between President Donald Trump and Democratic opponent Joe Biden.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson expects a clearer picture of Michigan’s vote on Wednesday.

In a CNN appearance, Benson said she expects the majority of tabulation to be completed. There are still hundreds of thousands of unrecorded absentee ballots from Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Warren and Sterling Heights, WXYZ reported Wednesday morning.

“We’ll know much more in the hours to come and we’ll have a much more complete picture of Michigan later today,” Benson said.

On Election Day, Benson warned it could be Friday (November 6) before all ballots could be counted, echoing election officials who urged patience during the process. About 3.1 million Michigan residents cast absentee ballots this year.

Other states that were too close to call Tuesday night — into the early morning hours Wednesday — include Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.

The Associated Press shows Trump with 213 electoral votes and Biden with 238 as of Wednesday morning. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.

The AP broke down how it calls races. It’s expected to call more than 7,000 races, including the presidential race and state races and issues, the organization noted.

“The general public has a more intense desire to understand it at a nitty-gritty level,” Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Sally Buzbee explained in an AP story October 30. “We don’t want to be a dark, mysterious black box of ‘We’re going to declare a winner, and we’re not going to tell you how we do it.’ I don’t think that benefits us, and I don’t think it benefits democracy.”
