Matthew Perry Says 'Friends' Reunion Is Set For March 2021

We couldn't be any more excited for this Friends reunion special update.

On Thursday (November 12), Matthew Perry took to Twitter to share some exciting news—the highly anticipated Friends reunion is set for March 2021. "Looks like we have a busy year coming up. And that's the way I like it!" Perry wrote about finally being able to film the special.

Like so many other shows and movies, the Friends reunion faced delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The special was initially scheduled to premiere with the launch of HBO Max back in May. The pandemic, however, prevented the special from even being filmed in 2020.

Following Perry's tweet, Entertainment Tonight was able to confirm that filming for the reunion special is set to begin in early 2021. The official release date, on the other hand, is still under wraps. Barring any other pandemic-related delays, though, Perry's information will likely prove true.

Marta Kauffman, the show's co-creator of Friends, revealed one of the main reasons filming has been delayed so long is the desire to film the special in front of a live audience. "We all want it to happen. We just have to wait until it is safe. This is a show that is not scripted, but this is the way the show works -- we are going to need a live audience. Even if we socially distance that live audience, it really is a huge part of what Friends is... We cannot do it without them," she told ET back in August. "Everyone is all in and we are just waiting for that time when it feels connected to bring in a live audience."

The Friends reunion will be an unscripted look back at the beloved sitcom's 10 season run. The original cast, including Perry, Jennifer AnistonCourteney Cox, Lisa KudrowMatt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, will be participating.
