Lorde Admits To Experiencing Massive Amounts Of Stress From Social Media

It's not news that Lorde tends to shy away from being on social media, it's been almost three years since she updated her Instagram and she has only briefly used her Instagram Stories to get fans to vote

In a new conversation with one of her friends, Cazzie David, the pair open up about the impact social media has on them. While David is constantly on social media and admitted she is addicted to it, Lorde is the complete opposite and she dove in a little deeper to why she tends to stay away from it.

As with many people, maybe even more so this year, Lorde has found the Internet to be less about funny memes and cute dog photos and more about seeing a 24/7 news cycle of everything bad in the world today. While none of the injustices people are fighting are new, it seems more people, more privileged people, have actually started paying attention to the informative and serious sides Twitter and Instagram have to offer.

“Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country,” she said. “I don’t know how you, someone I would describe as being reasonably neurotic, cope with that.”

While Lorde is privileged enough to be able to sign off of social media and not live day-to-day with systemic racism and police brutality, she opened up about her fears over climate change with David, who's mom produced 2006's An Inconvenient Truth.

“I feel that more is being done. I feel like our government [New Zealand] is more proactive about acknowledging that we are living in a rapidly changing climate and legislation has to reflect that,” she said. “It’s in every part of who we are and how we live. It’s the only thing that matters. There’s nothing less cool than not caring about the environment in New Zealand, which I love.”
