Cardi B was in the hot seat yet again after tweeting about wanting to buy a nearly $100,000 dollar purse.
On Sunday (December 6), the "WAP" rapper asked her 15.4 million Twitter followers: "Should I spend 88K for this damn purse ? Omggg it’s tempting 😩😩😩." The question, however, was met with tons of backlash as unemployment benefits are about to expire and Congress has yet to agree on a stimulus relief package amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
"read the room," one fan tweeted in response to Cardi's tweet. While another added, "Cardi we are going through a really rough time right now & a lot of people r scared that they won’t even be able to put a roof over their heads or food on the table. I love you but we r still going through Covid and the government isn’t doing sh*t to help us and hasn’t 4 months."
As critics and fans alike began condemning Cardi for her alleged "insensitive" tweet, the 28-year-old rapper responded by sharing fans' screenshots of her charitable work throughout the year that included donating one million dollars to coronavirus relief, donating 20,000 supplement meals to New York-area staff, and donating another million dollars to fans impacted by COVID-19.
"Also I got 7 uncles an 3 aunts on my daddy side,9 aunts and 3 uncles on my momma side a whole bunch of cousins I had to help cause of the pandemic," Cardi wrote. "If I want to splurge I can with out yall asking for hand outs like me and my husband don’t do so.Thank you."
Despite Cardi's mentioning of her charitable work, the backlash continued, leading her to announce a donation match challenge. "Okay let’s do this challenge! Since ya want to tell me to donate soo much ...Drop receipts on what YOU have donated too," she wrote. "I will match it and donate to a organization you have donate as well.LETS START NOW!" Cardi added, "Any charity or foundation drop your receipts Receipt under the comment I will match what you donated and match your donation to that same charity or foundation.Lets match energy."
After announcing her challenge, the "La Bebe" rapper continued to defend her initial purse tweet, writing "I never seen u tweet about me when I donated a million dollar twice now you here I didn’t offended no body, didn’t do nothing illegal .Im not going to apologize because I work my a** off and I ask MY FANS! Which ARE MY FRIENDS A QUESTION!Ya want to be hurt so bad."
Ultimately Cardi concluded her tweets by sharing a few more examples of her charitable work before announcing that she did, in fact, buy the bag. "Sooooooo......do ya want me to show ya the purse ?" she tweeted along with crying laughing emojis.
