Washington's Minimum Wage Will Raise In 2021 Due To Inflation

Washington will see an increase to the state minimum wage at the beginning of 2021, KING 5 reported.

Starting on January 1, 2021, the minimum wage will be set at $13.69 -- a raise of 19 cents. This is the first time since 2016 where a wage increase was determined by inflation rather than voters.

The Washington Department of Labor and Industries announced the raise in October. Reporters said a 1.39 percent increase to the "consumer price index" over the last year led to the decision.

"It also affects wages paid to some salaried employees exempt from overtime. Salaried executive, administrative and professional workers, and computer professionals must earn a salary above a minimum specified amount to remain overtime exempt. Starting in 2021, that amount will increase based on the number of employees at a business," according to KING 5.

The raise will not affect Seattle and SeaTac, however. The city and airport set their own minimum wages. This year, the minimum wage in Seattle was $16.39 per hour for larger employers, which will also be adjusted for inflation in 2021. SeaTac's minimum wage is $16.34.
