Gov. Newsom Proposes Plan For $600 Payments To Low-Income Californians

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the state's plan to send $600 in direct payments to low-income Californians.

Around four million Californians with an annual income of $30,000 or less would be eligible to receive up to $1,200 in relief with the federal stimulus and the proposed direct payment.

The state stimulus announced on Wednesday, January 6, would also include undocumented workers who were excluded from the federal stimulus.

Newsom said residents should expect to see direct payments start rolling out at the beginning of February.

“Through the Golden State Stimulus, Californians who have been impacted by this pandemic will get help to provide for their families and keep a roof over their heads,” said Newsom. “This plan will provide relief for Californians in need by distributing $600 rapid cash support – for some, at least $1,200 when coupled with federal relief.”

Newsom also announced that he is calling for an extension of eviction protections and will ensure that $2.6 billion of California's federal rental assistance is distributed based on the greatest need.

This proposal ensures that California renters who are experiencing unemployment or reduced work hours due to COVID-19 and pay at least 25% of their monthly rent cannot be evicted for unpaid rent.
