Wolf Alice Discuss Why #MeToo Needs To Become More Than 'Just A Hashtag'

Last month, Wolf Alice singer Ellie Rowsell accused Marilyn Manson of filming up her skirt without her consent when they met at a festival. The accusation came after Manson's ex-partner, actor Evan Rachel Wood, recalled harrowing abuse at the hands of the rocker, which led to other women coming forward with their own disturbing stories. Now, Rowsell and her bandmates are discussing what needs to be done to make sure #MeToo becomes more "than just a hashtag.”

Speaking to NME, the band questioned whether or not things are getting better for women who report sexual abuse.

“In some cases [they are getting better],” Rowsell said. “But in some cases, it’s probably going backwards so there’s no one answer to that.”

“I think stuff like #MeToo’s fantastic as a catalyst and a talking point, but now we need to work out how we shift those cultural norms to make sure that the message is translated to everyone, not just the people who have Twitter accounts and lots of followers,” guitarist Joff Oddie said, admitting more work needs to be done.

“So it’s not just a hashtag,” Rowsell added.

Wolf Alice recently announced their latest album, Blue Weekend, will release on June 11.
