As spring grows closer and the school year continues its fast march to the end of the semester, concerns have grown about how the pandemic will many students' rites of passage, such as prom and graduation. On Monday (March 15), the Wake County Public School System announced plans for end of the year activities. While in-person graduation will take place, albeit differently than usual, schools will not hold proms.
"Current pandemic guidance prevents planning for 2021 graduation ceremonies at the typical large venues like Raleigh Convention Center," the district said on its website. "Instead, each school will host graduation ceremonies on their campus this spring."
According to ABC 11, most schools in the district will hold graduation ceremonies in their stadiums, which can accommodate a max capacity of 30%. Schools are currently working on when the ceremonies will take place and will inform seniors by April 9.
In addition to changing graduation plans, traditional proms at WCPSS schools have been canceled, following the path of other districts around the state that have canceled proms and student dances this spring. Instead, each high school in WCPSS plans to host an event to celebrate and honor the graduating seniors as they prepare for their next step in life. According to the district's website, more details will be released to students soon.
If parents of students have questions concerning these events, they are encouraged to reach out to their school for more information.
