What started as an argument over a stimulus check erupted into a shooting.
Detroit law enforcement officials confirmed that one person is in serious condition and another was taken into custody following the incident. Police say it happened shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning (March 16) on the west side of Detroit, according to Local 4.
During the argument, a 31-year-old man left and returned with a gun. Police say he shot the 53-year-old man he was arguing with, and that the victim was in “temporary serious condition,” Local 4 reported.
It was not immediately clear how the two men seemed to know one another or how the argument started, except that it apparently stemmed from a stimulus check dispute. Officials did not publicly identify either man involved in the incident as of Tuesday afternoon.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the shooting remains under investigation, according to authorities.
It’s not the first time arguments over stimulus payments have led to gunfire.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that Malik Halfacre, 25, argued with the mother of his six-month-old daughter over getting at least half of her $1,400 stimulus check, reports show. It escalated, and Halfacre allegedly killed four people, including a 7-year-old child.
