Drew Robinson Hits First Home Run Since Losing Eye In Suicide Attempt

Sacramento River Cats' Drew Robinson made a big comeback on Tuesday night (May 11) just 13 months after losing his right eye in a suicide attempt.

Robinson attempted suicide with a handgun on April 16, 2020, reports Sports Illustrated.

The bullet tore his right eye, fractured his sinus, and exited under his left eye. According to Sports Illustrated Robinson waited 20 hours before calling 911. Doctors called his survival a miracle.

The Giants offered him a nonguaranteed contract in October and last week he made the Opening Day roster for the Giants' Triple A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats.

Just a week later, Robinson delivered "the moment every baseball fan has been waiting for: a Drew Robinson bomb!" the River Cats wrote on Twitter.

The surgeon who removed Robinson's eye told ESPN's Jeff Passan that the missing eye wouldn't necessarily be as big of an impediment as it seemed.

The surgeon explained that because hitters decide whether to swing at a pitch when it's around 45 feet from the plate, it would be outside the range Robinson's depth perception would be affected.

Robinson proved his surgeon right on Tuesday night's game in his hometown of Las Vegas.
