Police Find Home For Hamster Abandoned On The Road With 'Free' Sign

The Fairfield Police Department says one of their code enforcement officers recently stumbled across a hamster looking for a home, reports CBS13.

The hamster was found abandoned on a street in Fairfield with a sign that read "Free Hampster," according to police.

It was found sitting underneath a tree with the hamster and its cage sitting side of a Cuties box.

The code enforcement officer was able to rescue the hamster from the heat and find it a new home.

"We know that the decision to rehome your pet is not an easy one to make," wrote the police department in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 13.

However, the department urged residents to look for county resources if they need to find a new home for a pet.

"When attempting to rehome unwanted pets, please don't abandon them on our neighborhood streets," they continued.

Police indicated that they were able to find a new home for the pet hamster.

The department also left a link to a document full of different resources for rehoming a pet. They suggest going to the SPCA in Vacaville, placing an ad in local newspapers or Facebook pet groups, or using neighborhood community apps like Nextdoor.
