A Wisconsin woman was using a gun's laser to play with a cat when she accidentally shot someone.
According to Kenosha News, 19-year-old Jashanti Pleasant was charged with injury by negligent use of a weapon on Thursday, August 12.
According to the criminal complaint, four people, including Pleasant, were all in an apartment at the time of the shooting. The gun was brought by a 21-year-old man who had set it on a dresser. A witness said that Pleasant picked up the gun, "turned on the laser sight and was pointing it at the floor to get the cat to chase it."
The witness says she heard a gun go off and saw the 21-year-old man standing in a doorway. She said the man stood there in shock "then he asked Ms. Pleasant if she had shot him."
The injured man went to a different apartment, where police found him after responding to a 911 call. The man was shot in the thigh and the bullet went straight through his leg and hit the stove. The man was taken to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital for treatment.
The 21-year-old told police that he brought the gun and placed it in a nightstand. He also claims that he had removed the magazine, but when police found the gun in the apartment, it had a round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine.
Pleasant stated to authorities that she thought the magazine was taken out and the gun "accidentally went off." She also noted that she apologized to the 21-year-old and he said: "it was okay."
It was also reported in the complaint that Pleasant had been drinking the day of the accidental shooting.
Pleasant was released from jail on a signature bond.
