Houston's Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is once again stepping up to help those impacted by hurricanes.
McIngvale announced on Sunday that anyone from Louisiana who evacuated because of Hurricane Ida was welcome to stay at Gallery Furniture for free.
“Well we did it during Katrina and, you know, people need a place to stay. They’ve been disrupted from their homes by this terrible hurricane, so it’s the least we can do. We’ve got lots of mattresses, lots of sofas and anybody needs a place to stay, come out to Gallery Furniture," he told KPRC.
McIngvale has routinely opened his store up to people in need of shelter, including during 2017's Hurricane Harvey and this year's winter storms.
"We can always make more money, but we can't make more people," he told FOX 26. "So we're here to help people, and at the end of the day we're not going to be judged by the Creator by how much money we make, but instead of how much of a difference did we make."
In addition to free shelter, McIngvale is also collecting nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, and hygiene items. He hopes to send 30 relief trucks to Louisiana as residents begin to rebuild after the storm.
"We’re here to help. That’s what Texans do and you know a lot of our friends, neighbors, relatives live in New Orleans, so we’re gonna help them out as much as we can," he said.
Those interested in donating can drop off items at Gallery Furniture on 6006 N. Freeway or visit the Gallery Furniture website for more information.
