Demi Lovato understands that it may take time for people to learn the proper pronouns to use when addressing non-binary folks.
On Thursday, the star stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show and host Kelly shared her experience on The Voice and the struggle to not offend anyone by using the wrong pronouns. She shared with Demi:
"Even on The Voice, we've had these conversations with the producers because we're turned around. So we don't know them, we're not allowed to know them. Our big thing is like 'Oh god, we don't want to offend anyone. So that's the thing. I hate the cancel culture, and like 'Oh they're cancelled 'cause they said this'. And it's like 'No, no, no' -- give them a minute to learn. That's the truth, right. Because it's new for everyone. I just think [people] have to allow little grace, right?"
Demi chimed in, giving their gentle and understanding take on people who "slip-up" when it comes to using correct pronouns. They told Kelly:
"Yes. You have to have mercy for people that are trying to learn this NEW thing. And for me, I still mess up sometimes. Because I was born a female and was female my whole life, until I started identifying as non-binary, just a few months ago. So for me, I even have times where I slip up. Like someone will be like 'Yes, girl!' and I'm like 'Yesss'. I don't really take it personally. I just think it's important that people remember, this is a new thing and it's absolutely okay to make an accident, as long as your intention is right. It's just about accepting each other."
Demi came out as non-binary back in May, after having what they deem a "revelation" that came after "a lot of healing and self-reflective work." They're appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show comes just days after the star bared it all on for their performance of "Breakdown" with G- Eazy on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
