A man has died after being struck by a steel door during a storm in Grand Rapids Saturday night, according to CBS Detroit.
The accident occurred at about 10 p.m. at the Sandy Point Beach House restaurant. First responders from the Grand Rapids Fire Department arrived on the restaurant and found a man on the floor with a "traumatic injury," according to firefighters. A large, hinged shipping container door, located in the outside bar area of the restaurant, had stuck the man. He was taken to a hospital where he later died. It's currently unclear if the man was an employee, customer, or someone simply passing though, and police have not released his name.
Wind gusts were as high as 49 mph at the time on Saturday in Grand Rapids, according to the National Weather Service. Extreme weather and the impacts of climate change have not only affected Michigan, but have also been gripping the rest of the country recently. Earlier this week, the East Coast braced for bruising weather, including thunderstorms and severe wind gusts capable of toppling trees. Last week, a dangerous heat wave spread across the country, and high temperatures are still in the forecast for many regions in the United States at least until the end of the month.
