Twitter's new CEO, Elon Musk, has informed the employees who survived the layoffs that they will no longer be allowed to work remotely.
In his first mass email to all employees, Musk said that all employees would be expected to be in the office at least 40 hours a week and that any request to work remotely would have to be personally approved by him.
Musk also eliminated the monthly "days of rest" that Twitter introduced during the pandemic to give employees a break, Bloomberg reported.
In the email, Musk warned employees of "difficult times ahead" as the company works to become profitable. Musk said that he expects 50% of Twitter's income to come from the revamped Twitter Blue subscription service, with the other half coming from advertising.
"Frankly, the economic picture ahead is dire, especially for a company like ours that is so dependent on advertising in a challenging economic climate," Musk wrote. "Moreover, 70% of our advertising is brand, rather than specific performance, which makes us doubly vulnerable!"
"Without significant subscription revenue, there is a good chance Twitter will not survive the upcoming economic downturn," he added.
