The 2023 CMT Music Awards saw Darius Rucker reconnect with his 1990s rock roots as he hit the stage with The Black Crowes. On Sunday, April 2nd, the country hitmaker/Hootie & The Blowfish frontman and the Atlanta rock band hit the Moody Center stage in Austin, Texas to sing one of Crowes' signature hits.
Darius and the Crowe's singer and founding member, Chris Robinson took turns belting out the band's 1990 classic "She Talks To Angels" as photos of melting angel statues played on the screen behind them and fog billowed around their feet for dramatic effect. Darius and Robinson embraced each other at the end and LeeAnn Rimes, who presented an award right after, called the performance "a dream come true."
The stunning performance also served as a tease for the forthcoming "CMT Crossroads" special that Rucker and the Crowes recently filmed in Austin at the end of March. The special is set to air sometime in May. "The song's so iconic, everybody knows it," Rucker told The Tennessean backstage during the live taping. "In Hootie lore, that's the song that inspired me to write 'Let Her Cry.' For me to get to play with those guys - and to get to do it in tv in front of the world - it's pretty awesome."
The 2023 CMT Music Awards, hosted by Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown, also included performances by Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll, Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, The Black Crowes and Darius Rucker, Tyler Hubbard, and Wynonna Judd and Ashley McBryde, among many others.
