Loneliness is usually associated with negative feelings or situations, but it doesn't have to be a bad thing. Depending on the context, some quiet time allows people to collect their thoughts or take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Road trips can do just that, as well, especially when cruising down an empty stretch of highway with no other car or soul in sight.
If you want to embark on these lonely rides, Atlas Obscura rounded up the "loneliest road" in every state based on traffic data. The website revealed how they determined their picks:
"Telematics specialists at Geotab gathered 2015 data from the U.S. federal government’s Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) to find, for each state, the route with the lowest annual average daily traffic (AADT). HPMS data covers interstates, U.S. routes, and state routes over 10 miles long."
According to writers, Florida's loneliest road is State Route 29! This road, which is 76 miles long, goes from Carnestown to Palmdale.
The study declared State Route 11 in Alaska, also known as Dalton Highway, the loneliest road in the entire country. Alternatively, Interstate 5 in the Los Angeles metro area was named the busiest road in the United States.
