New Music Report - New Releases Week of May 22nd

By Nicole Mastrogiannis, James Dinh & Isha Thorpe

May 22, 2017

Happy Monday! Kickstart your week ahead by checking out all of the new music that has just been released in this roundup of new music that you need to be listening to. From new albums by Linkin Park and Snoop Dogg, to new songs from Camila Cabello and Selena Gomez, to new collaborations from Liam Payne & Quavo and Bebe Rexha & Lil Wayne, to our expert picks, take a look at this week's New Releases:

Camila Cabello - "Crying in the Club" & "I Have Questions"

Camila Cabello is officially a solo pop act with the release of her debut single, "Crying in the Club," which dropped alongside the track's sleek video. The song was co-written by Cabello, Sia and Benny Blanco, and first performed at Sunday's 2017 Billboard Music Awards, along with a little bit of "I Have Questions." It’s a solid effort for the budding star, but isn’t the most inventive of releases for a bandmate-turned-budding star. Nonetheless, we thoroughly appreciate Camilla's interpolation of Christina Aguilera's 1999 smash, "Genie in a Bottle."

A few days after her "Crying In The Club" released, Camila also dropped "I Have Questions." In her note to fans on Twitter, Camila explained that the song begins the story of her upcoming solo album The Hurting, The Healing, The Loving, and began writing it in a hotel bathroom. She wrote, "I was completely broken during that time, it was in the kind of pain that's uncomfortable to talk about, and it was the kind of chapter you never want to read out loud. I couldn't write another song for 6 months because writing meant i had to feel everything, and I wasn't ready to do that yet. So when I graduated from hotel bathrooms to studios to make my first album, I was making music about everything BUT what I was going through, it was like a secret burning on my tongue and for some reason I could not get myself to say it till one day i just could not run anymore. I pulled up the lyrics from the year before, and 'I Have Questions' was written.

Selena Gomez - "Bad Liar"

Selena Gomez's new single "Bad Liar" is finally here. Other than her recent collaboration with Kygo ("It Ain't Me"), and her "Only You" cover for the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack, this is Selena's first new material since her 2015 album Revival. "Bad Liar" is a bit different from Selena's previous two albums, which contain more upbeat dance rhythms and ballads. Her new single is simple with a repetitive bass line underneath minor additional percussion, and the occasional bell sound. She sings in the song, "All my feelings on fire/Guess I’m a bad liar."

Selena's "Bad Liar" was written by Justin Tranter, her pal Julia Michaels, Ian Kirkpatrick, David Byrne, and Selena herself. The song contains a sample of Talking Heads' 1977 hit song "Psycho Killer," recorded by the band for their debut album Talking Heads: 77. That song was included on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.

Liam Payne featuring Quavo - "Strip That Down"

Liam is the last of his former One Direction bandmates to release solo music -- but his debut solo single "Strip That Down" has at long last arrived. "Strip That Down" is Liam's very first solo release, and is the lead single from his forthcoming debut solo album. The song was co-written by Liam, Ed Sheeran, and Steve Mac (who penned Ed's chart-topping hit "Shape of You" from his Divide album).

Liam tells iHeartRadio exclusively of his new single, "It just sets a few things straight, but then also the chorus is more about stripping back the music. I like to hear it loud sometimes, but sometimes you got to strip it back." He adds of working with Ed and Steve on the song, "I was super cool. Getting to work with artists [like] that ... you couldn't really get luckier."

Linkin Park - One More Light

One More Light is Linkin Park's seventh studio album, and follows the band's 2014 album The Hunting Party. The album first introduced fans to their new sound a few months ago with their single "Heavy," which features Kiiara, and have released a few more songs since then, like their collaboration with Pusha T and Stormzy called "Good Goodbye," as well as "Invisible" and "Battle Symphony."

Back in February, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda told iHeartRadio during an interview that they took a different approach to the writing/recording process for their new album One More Light. Instead of the music influencing the words, Mike and Chester explain that this time, it was the other way around. They say the sound "lends itself to a more soulful, more sexier style than the more rigid and hard kind of people."

Linkin Park

Katy Perry featuring Nicki Minaj - "Swish Swish"

Even though it didn't look like Katy Perry was going to hit back at Taylor Swift on her upcoming album, WITNESS, her new single with Nicki Minaj titled "Swish Swish" says otherwise. The song unexpectedly dropped on Friday (May 19) and hears the pop star clearly coming for someone over a '90s-tinged house beat.

Produced by PJ "Promnite" Sledge, Noah "Mailbox" Passovoy and Duke Dumont, the track finds Katy tossing out several disses, admitting that said enemy is calculated, as cute as an old coupon and should retire. The WITNESS cut also samples Fatboy Slim's 2000 hit, "Star 69." "So keep calm, honey I'ma stick around/ For more than a minute, get used to it/Funny my name keeps comin' outcho mouth/ 'Cause I stay winning/ Lay 'em up like," Perry sings during the pre-chorus. Minaj shows up for some guest bars, but they aren't particularly thrilling, especially after contributing to recent releases for almost everyone under the sun, including Major Lazer, Jason Derulo, David Guetta and DNCE. You get where we're going here.

Bebe Rexha featuring Lil Wayne - "The Way I Are"

Bebe Rexha is fully aware that she could never touch Whitney Houston, but the pop star does a nice homage to the late music icon with the release of her new single, “The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody),” which features Lil Wayne. The mid-tempo collab hears Bebe sending love to the late Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, with cheeky references to the famed couple and the pop powerhouse's signature 1987's hit, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

Apparently, "Dance With Somebody" also has a deeper meaning to the pop star, considering she referred to the track as a big kiss-off to a record label. "When you're developing as an artist you have to kinda fight the stereotype of what everybody’s expecting of you, what way you should be, how you should look, what color your hair should be, how your make up should be and what you should wear," she reportedly said of the cut. "But the most important thing is if you like you and if you like the way you look."

Muse - "Dig Down"

Muse is back with their first new material in two years. The band released their new single "Dig Down," which follows their 2015 album Drones, and is about getting through tough times, and draws a little bit of influence from what is going on in the world today, Muse's own Chris Wolstenholme and Dom Howard opened up to us about the song's meaning. "This song is about finding strength in the face of some kind of adversity, really," Dom exclusively tells iHeartRadio. "It's a really simple message, but a strong one. It can relate to anything personal in your life, but also it's slightly influenced by the times that we live in, the things that are going on in the world right now."

Muse worked with a producer they've never worked with before on "Dig Down" -- Mike Elizondo. Elizondo has done a lot of work with Dr. Dre and Eminem, among a long list of talented artists.

Along with the new single, the band also released the official music video for "Dig Down." The action-packed visual was directed by Lance Drake and stars model and former athlete Lauren Wasser, who was nearly killed by toxic shock syndrome, and lost her leg because of it, five years ago. She's also on the single's official cover art.

Lana Del Rey - "Coachella - Woodstock in My Mind"

If this isn’t the most Lana Del Rey song title ever, then I don’t know what is. Everyone’s favorite festival darling is back with a new song that may or may not appear on her upcoming album, Lust for Life. As you might imagine, it's a downtempo cut that will make you want to wear a flower crown just about 24/7.

Faith Evans and The Notorious B.I.G. - The King & I

Twenty years after his untimely death, the late Notorious B.I.G. is still loved and remembered by his widow, R&B singer Faith Evans. The love Faith has for him has only grown since then. As she’s raising their only child together, Christopher Wallace Jr. II, the singer decided to show her undying love for her late partner in the most incredible way. She's released The King & I, a joint, posthumous album featuring songs with the two of them. There are 25 tracks on the project, and it features other stars like Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, Lil Cease, 112, Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes and more.

Snoop Dogg - Neva Left

Snoop Dogg released his 15th studio album, Neva Left. According to the project’s press release, the LP is all about how Snoop has evolved in his 25-plus year career. "Throughout the years, I’ve had my hands in a lot of different projects, but music has always remained at my core,” the MC says via the press release. “This album reflects every phase of me throughout my career,” he stated. "I’m excited for ya’ll to hear this new project that highlights the evolution of the Dogg."

MisterWives - Connect the Dots

MisterWives are back with their sophomore studio album, Connect The Dots, which is the band's second studio album, and features 11 new songs, including their single "Machine," and tracks like "Oh Love," "Drummer Boy" and "Coloring Outside The Lines." The band's own Mandy Lee did a lot of the writing for Connect The Dots in the woods of Woodstock, and the band worked with rock legend Butch Walker, who produced the album with MisterWives drummer Etienne Bowler.

The band's Mandy Lee tells iHeartRadio of the process, "Getting the chance to escape into the woods was incredibly liberating, plus transforming the living room into the studio where we lived and breathed recording everyday while cooking dinner each night, and 2:00 a.m. bonfires, was such an invigorating way to get to create together."

Rascal Flatts - Back to Us

Rascal Flatts just hit a milestone -- they released TEN studio albums, achieving that double digit number with their latest record Back To Us. Their tenth studio album, which they produced themselves, features ten new songs, including their single "Yours If You Want It," a collaboration with Lauren Alaina called "Are You Happy Now," and "I Know You Won't," which was previously recorded by Carrie Underwood for her album Carnival Ride.

Papa Roach - Crooked Teeth

Crooked Teeth follows Papa Roach's 2015 album F.E.A.R. and features 10 new songs, including their chart-topping single "Help," as well as collaborations with Skylar Grey ("Periscope") and Machine Gun Kelly ("Sunrise Trailer Park"). And the deluxe version of the album includes live versions of 16 previous songs and 3 bonus tracks.

Los 5 - "Satisfaction"

Last year's Macys iHeartRadio Rising Star winners Los 5 are back with a new single: "Satisfaction" -- and are definitely living up to their Rising Star winner title. The independent LA-based band comprised of Juan Pablo Casillas, Matt Rey, Ismael Cano, Jr, Hector Rodriguez, and Tomas Slemenson released their debut EP Meet Los Five last year, which included songs like "Poquito Mas" and "Kings & Queens" (the song trended as high as TOP 50 on the TOP 40 Airplay Chart earlier this year).

Now, the guys are looking towards the future as they work on a brand new English EP, which will include their new single "Satisfaction." The song was originally debuted by The Elvis Duran Show on Cinco De Mayo during the show's Dysfunctional Family Vacation. Check it out below:

Domino Saints - Rebels

Miami-based Latin urban pop duo Domino Saints, comprised of Gigi Ojeda and David Leal, just released their new EP called Rebels. The EP, which is their first, features six new songs including previous singles like "Ya Quiero" (which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Tropical Chart), "Ponte Sexy," and their latest "Mi Orgullo," which they recently released the music video for (see below).

Rebels was executive produced by Hector Ruben Rivera “Kahno” and Christopher Murray and includes hot urban producers Luis Salazar “The Dro1dz”, Master Chris, Sky, Alejandro Patiño “Mosty," JS and Rec808.

Definitely keep your eye out for Domino Saints this year. The duo is the only Latin music act that was chosen among the ten finalists for the annual Macy's iHeartRadio Rising Star talent search. More details on the competition and the ability to vote are available at: iHeartRadio.com/RisingStar.

Mura Masa featuring Desiigner - "All Around The World"

Producer/songwriter/instrumentalist Mura Masa, real name Alex Crossan, is back with a new awesome collaboration, and this time with rapper Desiigner. Crossan is preparing to release his debut self-titled album this July, and has already shared "1 Night" (with Charli XCX), "Love$ick" (with A$AP Rocky), and "What If I Go?," and the latest release from the upcoming LP is called "All Around The World" featuring Brooklyn-born rapper Desiigner. The hip hop dance-ready track features production from Mura Masa and lyrics from Desiigner, who raps in the chorus, "This goes for all around the world, to the world is gone/This goes all around the world, so we carry on."

Robin Schulz featuring James Blunt - "OK"

James Blunt comes out of hiding to offer a side to us that he doesn't typically showcase on "OK," his new collaboration with Robin Schulz. For this scenario, the two team up to provide listeners with a gorgeous house anthem, which pairs a hypnotic beat with a sing-a-long. What “OK” does best is present itself exactly as you’d imagine: a free-spirit dance track about the positive in life.

A$AP Rocky featuring Frank Ocean, Lil Uzi Vert & Quavo - "RAF"

A$AP Rocky dropped his latest single “RAF” featuring some of his homies Frank Ocean, Quavo, and Lil Uzi Vert. Becoming a fashion icon over the course of his rap career, Rocky decided to combine his style and music career to create “RAF,” which is an ode to Belgian fashion designer Raf Simmons. There is also another version to this song, which features another completely different verse from Ocean.

Mike Perry featuring The Vamps & Sabrina Carpenter - "Hands"

The Vamps and Sabrina Carpenter are currently on the road together overseas, and Friday saw the release of the studio version of "Hands," their collab with producer Mike Perry. It's a breezy dance number, which finds the three acts offering the ultimate hook-up soundtrack for your summer 2017 action. We’re entirely serious. "Come on lay your hands, your hands on me/ We don't have to talk/ Cause talk is cheap/ In the dark silence so loud/ You only gotta lay your hands on me,” the pair sing on the hook.

Madison Beer - "Dead"

"Dead" is the latest single from budding pop star Madison Beer. The track shows tremendous growth for the 18-year-old from her previous releases, and is about an ex who often plays with their significant other's mind, telling them sentiments like "I can't live without you" ... especially at times when they've had too much to drink. Madison sings in the pre-chorus, "Baby, no more showing up when you're not sober/At my front door just to say you're alone tonight."

Madison told Billboard of the new mature track, "It’s about a situation myself and so many others find themselves in when you feel ignored and not loved in a relationship, yet you’re still hearing empty words like 'I can’t live without you,' and it tears you up inside. So I wanted to make the anthem for staying strong though this moment and not taking any sh**!"

Terror Jr. - "Death Wishes"

Leave it to Terror Jr to turn Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" into a straight-up bop, with all the necessary lyrics about a night of debauchery and sin. Expect to hear this (and the previously-released "Caramel") on the electro-pop trio's Bop City 2. Oh, and if it gives you Kiiara vibes, then you’re not alone, my friends. Now, when are Terror Jr and Kiiara gonna hit the studio together?

Iggy Azalea - "Switch"

After the lackluster reception to "Mo Bounce," Iggy Azalea returns with "Switch," an easy pop/rap offering, which is clearly aimed at some Top 40 placement. It’s a catchy number, which also features Brazilian pop star Anitta, but after the song's video leaked ahead of time, the Aussie rapper might not release it after all. "I just wanted to clarify for everyone saying I should put it on Vevo,” Iggy recently said on Snapchat. “The video is not even finished being edited yet. We had media partners and other bigger plans for the video on the right day of release. And this leaking really just ruins things for Anitta and I. So I’m really disappointed that this has happened. I don’t know if the video will come out or be released at all now. And if it does, I hope that everyone will still support it.”

Yo Gotti featuring Meek Mill - "Top Looking Down"

In July 2017, both Yo Gotti and Meek Mill will be hitting the road together for their 21-city “Against All Odds Tour.” In anticipation for this exciting venture, the two MCs decided to drop “Top Lookin Down.” Throughout the single, Gotti and Mill spit about being real all day, their exotic cars and never running out of bread and bling. They also rap that they aren’t here for the fakes. Understandable. Peep the new banger below.

T-Pain & Lil Wayne - T-Wayne

T-Pain surprised all of his and Lil Wayne’s fans and released their collaborative album T-Wayne. T-Wayne was actually supposed to drop in 2009 -- almost 10 years ago! Fast forward nine years later and it's finally here. T-Pain decided to drop the joint album online. It features eight tracks from the two recording artists and potential future songs of the summer.

T-Wayne

Travis Scott - "Butterfly Effect"

Travis Scott dropped not one, but three new songs this past week! On Soundcloud, the rapper gifted his fans with “Green & Purple” – which features Playboi Carti -- “Butterfly Effect” and “A Man.” Though one of his other previously releases tracks, “Goosebumps” featuring Drake is currently one of the Top 40 songs in the U.S., Scott has still been readying his upcoming album AstroWorld. We’re not sure yet if these three new songs will be on the new project, but they’re still bangers. See (or shall we say hear) for yourself below.
