Jay-Z Says We're Past Kneeling After Signing NFL Deal, Celebs & Fans React

While defending his decision to partner with the National Football League, Jay-Z seemed to add more fuel to critics' already rampant fires.
In a press conference on Wednesday (August 14) — ironically the third anniversary of when Colin Kaepernick first kneeled during an NFL game — the Roc Nation exec appeared to dismiss players' kneeling protests after being asked if he would kneel or stand for the national anthem.
"I think we've moved past kneeling. I think it's time to go into actionable items," Jay responded. "I don't want people to stop protesting at all. Kneeling is a form of protest. I support protests across the board. We need to bring light to the issue and I think everyone knows what the issue is. We're done with that."
"We forget that Colin's whole thing was to bring attention to social injustice. In that case, this is a success. This is the next phase," he explained. "There [are] two parts of protesting. You go outside and you protest, and then the company or the individual says, 'I hear you. What do we do next?'"
Jay continued, "For me, it's like action, [an] actionable item, what are we gonna do with it? Everyone heard, we hear what you're saying, and everybody knows I agree with what you're saying [in Kaepernick's underlying message]. So what are we gonna do? You know what I'm saying? [Help] millions and millions of people, or we get stuck on Colin not having a job."
The "Mood 4 Eva" rapper's words didn't sit too well for a lot of people including Kaepernick's girlfriend and television host Nessa Diab, sports journalist Jemele Hill, Kaepernick's former teammate Eric Reid, who continues to kneel during NFL games, to name a few, and even Jay's own fans as many blasted the legendary emcee on social media following the press conference's airing on Thursday (August 15).

Jay-Z’s new alliance with the NFL comes at the expense of Colin Kaepernick. My latest piece for @TheAtlantic —> https://t.co/SLWvXLA4rO

You never turned your back on me or the people, even when the nfl tried to silence your voice & the movement. You’ve never flinched or wavered. I love you Brother! Let’s get it! @E_Reid35

And to the people - I see you, I hear you and I love you! Thank you for having my back!!!✊🏾 pic.twitter.com/kBJ1SCBYIq
Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression. I continue to work and stand with the people in our fight for liberation, despite those who are trying to erase the movement! The movement has always lived with the people! ✊🏾

These aren’t mutually exclusive. They can both happen at the same time! It looks like your goal was to make millions and millions of dollars by assisting the NFL in burying Colin’s career. https://t.co/LFBZpbj2tw

As previously reported, the rapper/business mogul and his entertainment and sports company Roc Nation announced their multi-tiered partnership with the professional American football league on Tuesday (August 13). According to the New York Times, Roc Nation will serve as the football league's "live music entertainment strategist," meaning Roc Nation and Jay-Z will consult on entertainment, including the Super Bowl halftime show, the creation of podcasts, visual albums, other events and concerts. The partnership also includes Jay and Roc Nation having great influence over Inspire Change, the NFL's social justice campaign.
"The N.F.L. has a great big platform, and it has to be all-inclusive," Jay told the NYT. "They were willing to do some things, to make some changes, that we can do some good."
Following news of the partnership, many dubbed the NFL's decision to align with the 49-year-old entertainment power player as a strategic move, given the bad publicity it's faced over the years in regards to the national anthem protests, Kaepernick's collusion case, and NFL boycotts from both sides of the debate. Jay was among many, not only the entertainment industry but also the United States who criticized the league for his handling of NFL players' peaceful protests and its alleged blackballing of Kaepernick.

Jay Z has done lotta good things, but cozying up w/NFL&Roger Goodell & saying we’re past kneeling ain’t one of them! How can somebody who never took a knee say we’re past kneeling?! Jay Z’s a straight up capitalist; threw Kap under the bus for shitload of NFL 💰. Disappointing. pic.twitter.com/nPTuLw2KNh

Jay-Z NEVER took a knee. The fact that he has the caudacity to to say that, “I think that we’ve moved past kneeling,” is ridiculous. He sacrificed NOTHING. In truth, he is actually capitalizing off of Kaepernick’s loss. pic.twitter.com/qruVgZx5Xo

The hilarious, audacity of billionaire Jay Z saying “we” are past kneeling when he wasn’t even a part of the kneeling protest in the first place. https://t.co/fW6kqqiu1h

Jay Z: “The movement was never about Kap having a job it was about injustice”

Right, but when Kap protested peacefully against injustice he lost his job. The NFL said you can only protest injustice the way we tell you to. Then they brought you in to co-sign.
Jay Z is billionaire, not a community organizer. He is going to protect his interests at all costs. I’m not putting stock in anything his team is doing because it won’t be to dismantle systems, it’ll be to reform a system he makes money off of.

Jay really could have just made his money partnering w/NFL without becoming their foil against Kaepernick and the kneeling protest.
— Benjamin Dixon (@BenjaminPDixon) August 15, 2019
But now he’s going to be a monument for the NFL to say, “Why are you protesting? Jay Z said it’s time to move on.”
#IStandWithKap .... I also think what Jay Z is trying to do will be useful. I think we can do more than one thing at a time. https://t.co/OG5rKclL9g
