Demi Lovato has released a powerful new song.
The pop star calls out President Donald Trump on her latest record, an aptly-titled anthem called “Commander in Chief.” Released just weeks before the upcoming presidential election, the politically-charged ballad hears Lovato urging the president to change his outlook on some of today’s most pressing crises impacting America today, from acts of racial injustice to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
On the urgent chorus, the 28-year-old sings, “Commander in Chief, honestly/ If I did the things you do/ I couldn't sleep, seriously/ Do you even know the truth?/ We're in a state of crisis, people are dyin’/ While you line your pockets deep/ Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still/ Be able to breathe?”
Lovato doubled down on her message by encouraging her followers to go out and vote, writing, “Won’t give up, stand our ground... We’ll be in the streets while you’re #CommanderInChief. … I'm calling on all of you, please join me in voting for this years election.”
Lovato spoke at length about what called her to write the song in a recent interview with CNN.
"There's been so many times that I've wanted to write the President a letter or sit down with him and ask him these questions," she told the outlet. "And then I thought, I don't really actually want to do that and I thought one way that I could do that is writing a song and releasing it for the whole world to hear and then he has to answer those questions to everyone and not just me."
“Commander in Chief” is Lovato’s latest song release following “Still Have Me,” “I’m Ready,” “Anyone” and “I Love Me.”
