Ariana Grande just earned herself another number-one hit.
The pop star’s newest single, “Positions,” debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. This new record celebrates not only Grande’s fifth number-one, but also her fifth track to debut on the songs chart following previously-released jams “Thank U, Next,” “7 Rings,” “Stuck with U” and “Rain on Me.”
With this, Grande makes history as the first artist with five Hot 100 No. 1 debuts, besting the likes of Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Drake, and Travis Scott, who each have three debut number-ones, respectively.
“Positions,” her third number-one this year, served as the lead single to Grande’s highly-anticipated sixth studio album of the same name, which dropped on October 24. Across 14 tracks, Positions finds the 27-year-old songbird enlisting some of pop and R&B’s biggest artists including Doja Cat (“Motive”), The Weeknd (“Off the Table”), and Ty Dolla $ign (“Safety Net”).
Grande’s new album is also the third she’s released in just two years, following her fourth album, Sweetener (2018), and her fifth LP, Thank U, Next (2019). Both projects debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
Speaking about Positions, which explores themes of trust, sex, love and lust, Grande described the LP as one of her most beloved projects. “I don’t have a top three or anything ! everything goes hand in hand,” she said of the tracks on the album. “This project is my favorite for many reasons and i really can’t wait for it to be yours. thank u for your love and excitement, it means the world to me.”
