Britney Spears' lawyer has previously admitted that she fears her father, Jamie Spears, and does not want to work as long as he is at the helm of her conservatorship. Now, Jamie has come forward to share his take as the pop titan continues to fight for her freedom.
Speaking with CNN, Jamie, 68, said he was on "good terms" with the entertainer, 39, until August of this year when her attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, filed to officially remove him as conservator of her estate. The role sees him in charge of her entire financial empire. "I love my daughter and I miss her very much," Jamie said in a statement. "When a family member needs special care and protection, families need to step up, as I have done for the last 12-plus years, to safeguard, protect and continue to love Britney unconditionally. I have and will continue to provide unwavering love and fierce protection against those with self-serving interests and those who seek to harm her or my family."
Meanwhile, Jamie's attorney Vivian Lee Thoreen tried to argue that the pair's relationship is "not that different than your average father-daughter relationship." "There has always been a mutual love and respect for each other," Thoreen told CNN. "Until Britney's court-appointed attorney Sam Ingham abruptly instructed Jamie not to contact Britney a few months ago, Jamie and Britney had spoken often and regularly throughout the entire conservatorship."
"In fact, they had spoken just the day before and had had a pleasant and collaborative conversation," she continued.
During a November hearing, Ingham made it clear that the pop titan is not interested in a personal or professional relationship with Jamie. "My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father. She also stated that she will not perform as long as her father is in charge of her career," the attorney claimed. "We are really at a crossroads."
The hearing also saw both Britney and Jamie’s teams come together to determine whether Jamie will remain co-conservator of her estate. However, Judge Brenda Penny decided not to suspend Jamie and told the court that the matter could be further discussed "down the road." Additionally, Britney's mother, Lynne, 65, and her attorney, Gladstone Jones, revealed that Jamie has compared his daughter to "a racehorse who has to be handled like one" during discussions about Britney's health in the summer of 2019.
