An Oregonian said he was in Washington D.C. Wednesday (January 6) and witnessed a mass demonstration escalate into people storming the U.S. Capitol.

Eric Post spoke with KATU and said the people present wanted "to have their voices heard." Demonstrators even compared the event to the Civil War, and that they were willing to die for their cause, according to him.

"I never thought I would see American people storming the U.S. Capitol to take it over," Post, who is a Marine, told reporters.

He is no stranger to protests either, saying that he filmed the unrest in Portland. Sensing the D.C. protests would be "monumental," he traveled all the way to there. He didn't realize it would become a "scary situation," as journalists described.

"When it became apparent that people weren’t going to hear what they want to hear, they turned to the Capitol building. I came here as an observer and as an observer, I’m heartbroken to see how much pain on all sides, the left, the right," Post said. The Marine said he heard gunshots, saw injuries and even heavy use of tear gas. That's when he worried for his own safety and left the area, he told reporters.

Sources are reporting that four people have died from the unrest in Washington D.C. so far, including a woman who was fatally shot in the chest. Reporters also said the people who showed up at the demonstrations were supporting President Donald Trump and protesting against the certification of election results.
