CPS Energy says it's holding off for now on sending customers expensive electricity bills.
“We are not going to be pushing exorbitant bills through our system to our customers. Our customers have already been through a lot," CPS Energy President and CEO Paula Gold-Williams said on Monday.
CPS made the announcement days after stories about Texans getting stuck with extremely high power bills went national.
The price of electricity in Texas skyrocketed during last week's winter storms because of a surge in demand. CPS says it doesn't want to pass those higher prices on to its San Antonio-area customers.
“I do very much understand how customers don’t want to pay anything associated with the storm,” Gold-Williams said. “We’re going to do the best we can to bring those prices down, to work with state and local officials so that we can can look for any resource we can to be helpful.”
The company is still trying to figure out how much more it spent last week to provide energy and what it can do to lower bills, KSAT 12 reported.
Local and state leaders are also trying to find a way so that electric customers won't be stuck with expensive bills. Mayor Ron Nirenburg said there will be "hell to pay" if locals have to foot the electric bill for last week's winter storms.
Until a solution is offered, CPS Energy suspended its autopay system.
We have suspended our autopay system effective Sat. 2/20. No CPS Energy customer will have their bill charged until we determine how to best proceed to fulfill our financial obligations & minimize the impact on our customers.
