Most grocery stores in Texas should have stocked shelves and be back to normal by the end of the week, industry leaders told NBC DFW.
Frozen temperatures and icy roads delayed food shipments across the state while power and water outages caused distribution centers and grocery stores to shut down last week. As the state gets back on its feet, so is the grocery store supply chain.
“We just ask customers to have some patience. It may take a while to catch back up,” said Gary Huddleston, grocery industry consultant for the Texas Retailers Association.
Grocery stores are prioritizing high-demand items, like water, milk, eggs, and meat. Huddleston said that frozen foods are considered lower priority so it'll take longer for the freezer aisle to be fully restocked.
"It won't be the whole assortment that we offer, but it'll enable us to get back in stock more quickly," H-E-B President Craig Boyan said on Monday.
The San Antonio-based grocery store chain said it's sending out additional delivery trucks, too. Most H-E-B stores currently have purchase limits on milk, bread, meat, and other staples.
Walmart, Target, and Randalls also released statements saying their stores are trying to restock as quickly as possible.
