With this weekend's snowstorm, officials are warning Colorado residents against travel.

"Whatever your plans are, you need to get to your destination before the storm hits," a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Tamara Rollison told FOX31.

The incoming snowstorm, expected to start on Friday, March 12, has the potential to be the biggest storm in 9 years.

"We are prepared for the worst," said Rollison.

Plows will be working around the clock once the snow starts to fall.

"Our crews focus on the major interstates - on I-25, on I-70, and others," said Rollison. "And when the snow is coming down hard and heavy, they make continuous rounds on those roadways."

Some areas may be difficult to clear in several parts of the state.

"It will be difficult for [plows] to get onto other secondary roads to clear those until the snow stops and they have a chance to catch up," she said.

CDOT says drivers should prepare for closures especially along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor, on I-70 east of Denver International Airport, and within the I-25 Gap Project Area.

"We call these safety closures," said Rollison. "We close them in advance so that we can avoid motorists from getting stranded."

If you must travel during the storm, they recommend making sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas and is stocked with water, snacks, and winter gear.
