Ongoing drought and multiple heat waves created perfect conditions for fires to break out in the Pacific Northwest this season. Washington has seen more than double the number of large fires by July 31 compared to the same time last year, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center (NICC).

Over 300,000 acres of Washington state land have been burned so far in 2021, and hundreds to thousands of people had to evacuate their homes at some point just to escape the flames. KING 5 reported on July 29 that 61% of Washington's wildfires this year were caused by humans.

Even though several fires have been put out since May, more continue to rage across the state.

Here's an update on the current fires happening in the Evergreen State. Information is sourced from NICC, the Statesman Journal and The Seattle Times.
