That's according to Zippia, a career research hub. Zippia reported that in 2020 alone, the total number of pizza sales in the U.S. was $46.24 billion and pizza sales worldwide totaled $145 billion.

Although large pizza chains are the first to come to mind when ordering a pizza, independently owned pizza restaurants are actually giving chain pizzerias a run for their money. The report states:

"However, chain pizzerias and independent ones actually share a pretty even split of the pie, with each type of business holding 59% and 41% of the market share, respectively. In fact, independent pizzerias actually opened more total stores in 2020, while chain stores showed a small net loss."

Looking at data from 2020, Zippia compiled a list of the 10 largest pizza chains in the United States and two are headquartered in Michigan.
