Two people were killed Friday morning (August 20) when a plane crashed down outside of Charlotte shortly after takeoff.

According to WSOC, a small, single-engine airplane crashed and burst into flames shortly after taking off around 10:30 a.m. from Jeff Cloud Field at the Anson County Airport in Wadesboro, about 50 miles east of Charlotte. North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Pierce said the plane looked like it was experiencing engine trouble, clearing one set of trees before crashing into another.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the single-engine PA-24 plane was carrying two people on board, but the agency will not release information regarding the victims. The FAA issued a statement on Friday confirming the crash and the ensuing investigation.

"The Federal Aviation Administration will release the tail number of the aircraft after investigators verify it at the accident site," the statement read in part. "The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents or incidents."

As of 2 p.m., no other information regarding Friday morning's crash has been officially released, including the identities of the two victims and the cause of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
