Several people were sent to the hospital Friday (August 27) morning after an SUV crashed into a school bus in Iredell County.
According to WCNC, a school bus was carrying 26 students to East Iredell Middle School around 8 a.m. when a 2006 Mazda Tribute crossed the center line near the intersection of Shumaker Drive and Houpe Road in Statesville, sideswiping the bus as it attempted to make a right turn. The driver of the bus plus nine students were taken to the hospital to get treatment for minor injuries as was the driver of the Mazda.
Officials with Iredell-Statesville Schools issued a statement Friday confirming the crash.
"Several individuals were transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital with minor injuries," the district said in a statement. "At this time, the students from bus 255 are with Principal Kathy Walker, waiting for another bus to pick them up and transport them to school. The accident was a result of a vehicle hitting the school bus from behind."
The driver of the vehicle that crashed into the bus has been charged with driving left of center, the news outlet reports, and the Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate what caused the vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic.
