Hurricane Ida has caused "catastrophic damage" in the state since it made landfall on Sunday (August 29) afternoon. Along with flooding, building damage, and the New Orleans Parish losing all of its power, the hurricane has also caused road closures along the I-10 and I-12.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development sent out an announcement about the closure. The announcement states:

"The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is reminding drivers that fallen trees, downed power lines and other debris have made many roads in south Louisiana impassable, including portions of I-10 and I-12. This will likely be common in all areas that are in the path of Hurricane Ida."

The announcement also notes that the current weather conditions prohibit the DOTD staff from clearing state routes.

When it is safe, DOTD has staff that will begin clearing roads. However, they do add that clearing state routes may take some time and damage assessment teams will be reviewing the impacted areas to "determine the extent of the damage to the roads and bridges."

The DOTD wants to remind residents that it is currently unsafe to travel.

According to a tweet from the Baton Rouge Traffic account, the I-10 was closed in both directions just before 7 p.m. between the Prairieville and Gramercy exits because of multiple trees on the highway.
