Former Wrestling Star Daffney Unger Dead At 46

Former professional wrestling star Daffney Unger, best known for her run in World Championship Wrestling, has died at the age of 46.

Unger, whose real name was Shannon Spruill, was confirmed to have "passed away suddenly" in Gwinnett County, Georgia on Wednesday (September 1), according to her mother Jean Tookey Spruill in a post shared on her Facebook account Thursday (September 2) afternoon.

"It is with great sadness I have to let you know that my daughter Shannon Spruill…Scream Queen Daff, passed away suddenly last night. Absolutely heartbroken," Spruill wrote.

Unger's friend, fellow wrestler Lexie Fyre, confirmed the former WCW star's death to TMZ Sports Thursday.

"We are very sad to have to announce the passing of Shannon Spruill aka Daffney Unger," Fyre said, noting that they "called each other sisters."

"We are posting this at the request of her family. Please respect their privacy at this trying time. I will miss you my logical sister from another mister."

The FOX Sports account for WWE, which owns WCW's library, paid tribute to Unger after news of her passing Thursday.

A cause of death has yet to be determined as of Thursday afternoon.

Fyre told TMZ Sports that Unger was battling mental health issues prior to her death.

On Wednesday, police in Gwinnett County attempted to make contact with Unger after the former wrestler posted a disturbing video on Instagram Live in which she seemingly discussed taking her own life.

Police said they attempted to locate Unger, but showed up to her last known address and were unable to make contact with her on Wednesday night.

Unger made her WCW debut in November 1999, playing the deranged girlfriend of David Flair, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, and served as the younger Flair's manager.

The former wrestler competed in numerous other promotions including Impact Wrestling (then known as Total Nonstop Action Wrestling), Ring of Honor Wrestling, SHIMMER Wrestling and Shine Wrestling.
